This band was SOOO ahead of their time. This shit came out on 1994. That’s incredible to think that. The best “emo” band of that era. Next to Mineral.
What about I Hate Myself?
Mineral was so good
Yeah, but Knapsack rules too
What about Jawbreaker 🙌
@@directedbyjack Honestly never heard much of them but I love Jets to Brazil. All three of their albums were great.
Sad, not whiny. Rocking, not obnoxious. This is when it was good.

"Oh I dream to heal your wounds... but I bleed myself." years later, even it's just memories, this line hurts
true... the line is the reason, why this song is one of my favorites. I mean, the whole song is "perfect" ;)
Thanks. The man spinning must have gotten dizzy.
I've been feeling this a lot recently. My friend is going through a really hard time, and I'm doing my best to be there for her, but I haven't been doing that great myself so it's just hard.
i read this exactly when he sang this line. its so real
So true
This was the song that gave me a whole new outlook on the emo genre and music itself. Today, there's a massive stigma telling someone one of your favourite music genres is "emo" because they'll immediately associate it with the fad of 'emo hair/clothes/makeup' and the Screamo/alt metal heard today. But this song truly captures the genre; if it was condensed in to one song, it'd be this, that's how important this song and their album Diary is. It's a shame people don't appreciate the emo genre for what it actually is, bands like Sunny Day, American Football, Lifetime have influenced several bands over the years and it's sad how they don't get the recognition they deserve.
Shaun Anderson Well said man
Shaun Anderson Texas is the reason,Christie front drive and Mineral Also!!
Shaun Anderson you hit the nail on this one with this comment!
Great feedback. I'm actually a drummer in an emo band. I hate when I tell people that and they associate it with looking like I'm a walking billboard for hot topic. Sunny day, American football, both awesome emo bands. Idk if you know who empire, empire (I was a lonely estate), foxing, snowing, mineral, prawn, or dikembe are, but they're all fantastic emo bands.
The way I described emo is exactly what it is. What I described is known as the emo revival. The original emo bands who set the stage for it are sunny day, mineral, and rite of spring. The emo revival is spearheaded by empire empire. Other bands that fall into it would be prawn, a great big pile of leaves, the world is a beautiful place and I'm no longer afraid to die, elvis depressly, snowing, algernon cadwallader, and foxing among others. It can often be identified by twinkly guitar riffs and somewhat high pitch borderline whiny vocals with intricate but not so flashy rhythm sections.
This band takes me way back. I have a mix tape of them, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Mad Season, Sound Garden, Pearl Jam, and a few others. Damn man I miss the 90s....
Can you make a playlist of this tape?
I second that. A playlist of that tape would be amazing

Nooooo waaaay
Oh god this song gives me the most beautiful, painful, nostalgic feels. Used to listen to the entire Diary album on my 1st generation iPod, driving down the highway in my vw beetle- going through a lot of change and hard shit at that specific time in my life. Hearing this almost hurts..but in a good way if that makes sense
Makes total sense, I have a few albums like that also, one being Bloom by Beach House.
Damn I could almost write the same exact words. When the chorus starts it gives me the chill, we just understand as people said that we know those days are over, its the end of an Era like Ted Mosby said haha... its just pure melancholy and a weird sense of liking the sadness... I feel you guys. Its nice to know we are experiencing similiar things... it feels less lonely
I used to listen to this album when I was in my early 20s and think about a girl from high school i spent many a night probably the coolest girl I've ever met she got me into all the music i love takes me right back to that place 25 years later
it helped shape who you are
ipod 😂… I had to flip the the cassette over if my auto reverse wasn’t working riding the bus, high school in the 90s… i did listen to it nonstop. bought it because i liked the album cover
I walked In on my 4th grade teacher early before the bell rang and uh.......she was jamming to this.

Cant believe its been over 20 years already 🤭🤭🤭 where has the time gone.....
No shit?
@Yoga Cholandha College radio brought me here 20 years ago.
the drummer looks like he scares himself after every snare hit lol
lmfao i noticed it too and the fact some hits are late hahaha
lol yea he is a bit out of time
+DiscoKiller. It's a music video. With that being said, do you really think that's the case? I'm pretty sure it's already apart of the composition of the song.
*****. I think it's deliberate.
*****. What about an odd time signature? Or some shit? I don't play an instrument and I don't have a real extensive knowledge, so I'm leaving it up to you if that's the truth. I also want to point out that I'd have to assume it would be a prerogative to be able to play adequately if you are in a band such as this.
it kills me that sunny day real estate are literally musical genius's and never blew up. It’s genuinely confusing to me, especially since they were at the forefront of the genre.
Well Nate's in foo fighters now so he's popular af
same with nero's rome
I couldn't agree more, the music business is a funny thing. At the time when they first started playing I was living in Seattle and they were always my favorite then - and still are on my mind a lot. I've stopped trying to figure it out and just enjoy and know they meant a lot to me.
omg moment reading your comment. saw Nero's Rome at Under The Rail, 1996 or so. Nero's Rome blew my goddamn socks off.
i think they fall into the same never quite made it like they should have with the band quicksand.
I don't think these guys had a clue they were making emo music
I don't think so either. I think They were just depressed.
Mr. Froglegs I don’t think they would have made music at all if they were depressed. I don’t find this music depressing at all really, just cool.
Lmao this is so true
Emos can gtfo and any other group that labels itself as different ffs
what in tha fuck stop crying
If this is "emo" music, sign me up to join this movement cause I love this music.
Sucks to be you, actual emo music is as dead as grunge. Plenty of old stuff to go through though
the shit then is better then the shit today
will roc Do yourself a favor and checkout bands like Citizen, Basement and Superheaven (They used to be called Daylight so it may be easier on here at least to put Daylight in.) Really go through Run For Cover Records because they have a lot of cool bands. Theses three are some of the more popular ones though.
XcaptainXobliviousX its not dead, its just no where near as popular as it used to be, theres still some decent real emo bands out there
Actually, emo music (yeah like REAL emo music) is still bountiful today with bands like Modern Baseball and Brand New (although they are probably ending soon tho)
It's 2004 and I'm staring at a black and white picture of my crush in my yearbook 💔

In the late 90's I would sit in my car in the kroger parking lot after work with a girl I loved very much and we would just sit for hours and listen to music, stare at the stars and hold hands and this is one of the songs I heard while sitting there with her so every time I hear it it brings back one of the fondest memories of my life. 2 other songs that bring back the memory of her and those nights are: love spit love - am i wrong, the nixons - sister. Out of all the songs we heard while sitting there these 3 seem to take me right back inside that car with her.
Are you still together?
Let's go Krogering!
such a sick memory. thank you for sharing dude ❤️
It frustrates me how time works in life.
What happened?
I remember there was a SDRE sticker in the locker i was assigned when i got to high school and i made a note to check em out. 20 years later i finally have: better late than never. There were just too many great bands around in the 90s to be explore everything.
The drummer is so, so good.
Calbenmike Dave Grohl didn’t think so
@Luke Robinett I think he is. He create his own personal style, but he plays very good both technically and rhythm-wise
@@alexdude341 "According to Grohl, Goldsmith's drumming had good moments, but his performances mostly did not fit what Grohl had conceived for the drum track, so the frontman decided to redo them himself. Goldsmith even asked if he should go to Los Angeles, but Grohl declined and said he was only performing overdubs. Eventually, Mendel told Goldsmith the situation. Grohl said that he still wanted Goldsmith as a member of the band, despite replacing his tracks, but the disgruntled drummer decided to leave the Foo Fighters instead. Speaking in 2011 about the tension that surrounded the Goldsmith's departure, Grohl said, "There were a lot of reasons it didn't work out […] but there was also a part of me that was like, you know, I don't know if I'm finished playing the drums yet. […] I wish that I would have handled things differently."

Hello there hh
@@Youness-u1v Hey
This is pure emo right here being a 2000’s kid I’m sad I never got to experience the bands of this time.
This is Grunge kid.
@@casper_rocha dumbest thing i’ve read today
@braingazer... Is that what they said?
I was born in 2007, consider yourself lucky dude.
Nowadays, emo isn’t even emo anymore. It’s just a bunch of edgy people who whine about things.
Start one. A band, I mean. No one is stopping you. Make the music you'd want to hear. Instruments aren't hard if you're willing to practice every day until your fingers blister and bleed. It's more fun and less intense than it sounds.
Some of the most devastatingly beautiful music ever released. I purchased Diary at Every Day Music in Portland, OR in the late 90’s. After I left EDM that night I played the CD in my car as I drove I-5 North back into Washington. The achingly powerful music coupled with Enigk’s voice got me misty eyed almost immediately. Other than Mineral’s The Power of Failing-particularly the song Parking Lot-I’ve never experienced an uncontrollable response when listening to music like I did that night.
Goddamn that must’ve been powerful. Wish I couldve experienced the PNW in the 90’s. It’s definitely a different place now
👍well thanks to you I just found out about Mineral ..... WOW!!!

This will always be my favorite Sunny Day Real Estate song ever! It's amazing

Such a tight band. Drummer deserves a lot of respect despite not fitting in to The Foo Fighters. Style just didn't fit but he is incredible.

Man, I can’t even tell you how many parties I would go to and you would be hammered literally could not move in the back of your chair and as you’re sitting there, euphoric. Lying bastard
They must have recorded with a Microphone stuck right on the hi hats, listen to how crisp and gainy they sound, pretty sick
Phantom mics. They most likely recorded the drums on their own like they do with vocals. Phantom mics are so strong they can hear a moth fart.
Yea 3 year old post but offering my 2 cents
the entire kit sounds amazing. snare is powerful but not overbearing with the right amount of sustain. kick has good attack and low end. cymbals are just washy enough but you can hear the pings of his ride during the verses. masterfully recorded drums - wish i could say the same for the guitars.
@@julianboyd8719 that '90s cranked up snare sound, have to say I was glad that fell out of favor. Once every drummer on the bill had a piccolo something had to give.
