    I lived in San Francisco in the late 80's - early 90's. Tracy had a house there. Saw her several times around town - coffee shops etc. She was always gracious but very shy and she seemed uncomfortable with fame as sensitive beautiful souls often are.

    This is an absolute masterpiece in every way, stunningly beautiful voice, melody, musicianship and humanity.

    Its hard to believe this song is 35yrs old. Its still, sadly, as relevant today as ever.

    I was born in Massachussetts . The song at the time was all true about so many. Yes a real song & weighed heavy on my heart. So many Alcoholics & many trying to find a way out of a bad situation! The first time I heard her song reminced me where I came from & learned she was from Massachusetts too. A stone away from where I lived.

    This live version is better than the studio version. She was able to add more deep feelings. I love your heart-felt reaction. The story is heart-breaking, and I can relate, because what I’ve been through. She made it without “him” and I made it without “him”

    Thanks Rory...Tracy hits a nerve every time...such relatable lyrics...bare bones performer, no glitz - just Tracy and her guitar...

    Thank you for listening. Many reviewers haven't a clue what she is telling us. She is poet, lyricist , storyteller extraordinaire. We are so fortunate to be living during her lifetime.

  • @kathybelk5478
    @kathybelk5478 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    I used to feel sad for her by the end of the song. Then I realized she didn’t need him to survive, to take care of her children and herself. She had been doing it all along. She lost that dream, but she had so much to look forward to in the future without him lurking in the background.
    A lot of women have had a man like this in their lives. They had the strength to tell them to leave and never look back. The strength and wisdom to take care of herself and her children. ❤

    • @dcg4mn
      @dcg4mn 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And I’m a man who had a wife like this in my life. I had the strength to tell her to leave and took care of myself and raised our son as a single parent.
      It’s most often one way but FAR from universal.

    Thank you (from Toronto) for this experience Rory. Your reaction along with everything about Tracy Chapman (the performance, those lyrics, the magical melody, and more) teared me up while swaying to it all. There's nothing like being-in-the-moment musically with someone so exactly. I'd forgotten this song until the Grammys last night, thus I'm here getting even more.

    The cycle of poverty😢. Give Me One Reason!!!!!

  • @jenniferbaumgarden9293
    @jenniferbaumgarden9293 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I look at the ending in a positive light. She's finally breaking the cycle. She got the good job and the house, so she's set down roots now. That's what she meant by "I got no plans, I aint going nowhere". Then she kicks her deadbeat partner to the curb "So take your fast car and keep on driving".
