We watched the last half hour of this film in my history class today. When he spoke those words I felt this sudden sense of remorse. My Dad used to say that exact same thing to me as a little kid, I never knew where it came from until now.. Seeing this scene just brought tears to my eyes. I understand that it was spoken to him earlier in the movie also as he was a runner.
I saw Gallipoli in 1982 in a Theater. My Father took me. I was 11. Inconsolable. Takenaway" I joined the US Army as a Light Infantryman. And Wound up marrying a Beautiful Turkish Girl ... Scene makes us both cry.
"Those heroes that shed their blood And lost their lives... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore, rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies And the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side, Here in this country of ours. You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries... Wipe away your tears. Your sons are now lying in our bosom And are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land, they have Become our sons as well." -Ataturk, 1934
I remember watching this when I was in year 6 at school, not sure why the teachers thought that was a good idea, I dont think I had ever seen my class so quiet for so long after a movie had ended.
Col Hughes and Col Antill were both Australian Officers and ordered FOUR waves of attack! I cannot imagine how those brave men waiting in the fourth wave must have felt having seen the murderous charges that had already failed.
And now every April I sit on my porch And I watch the parade pass before me I see my old comrades, how proudly they march Reliving their dreams of past glory I see the old men, all twisted and torn The forgotten heroes of a forgotten war And the young people ask me, "what are they Marching for?" And I ask myself the same question
The commanders at the Nek Gen Hughes and Col Antill were Australian Officers who sent wave after wave of brave Lighthorsemen to their death. Why they could not have stopped after the first wave had 90% casualties is beyond belief. How they must have felt in the fourth wave I cannot begin to imagine.
The highest disproportional losses of the war were suffered by west Australian men. All volunteers. Least we forget gallipoli was only the beginning of these groups of men that proved how resilient and capable Australians were at that time. Not sure we’d stand the test these days.
I agree. This was a movie to show the bravery of Australians. At no point did it say that we wer the ONLY brave ones! Also these people wer trying to sell the movie for money... they probably discussed that the idea of british commanders was a better story. Who cares about what countries what! Every soldier from everycountry feels pain. When your dieing it doesn't matter which name of soil you wer born on.
I watched this in school not that long ago and at the end everyone went "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!" We talked about how Archie dies is the same way he finished his training at the start with his arms back and chest forward. So its basically like his race is finished, as well as his life.
Holly yes. It was also him realising that the weapon would slow him down. They would never be able to retrieve it, and he knew he was dead. So he ran with all his heart.
grrgrrgrrrgrrgrrgrgr I’m not going to disagree with you about the war being “pointless” but this battle was truly a failure. Sending in soldiers for a lost cause. Wasting their lives on the wrong beach, with a strategy that could never work.
I'm glad that movies like this are made, even if they are hollywoodised or anything, it at least gives people insight onto what actually happened or at least will leave it feeling some sympathy and respect for men like this...
If the film was to make australia look good who cares it was still a kick ass film. And the film pearl harbour made out that the enigma code was broken in USA.. it was actually solved in UK
@kitkatkristy33 yeah we just finished watching it yesterday, every one was screaming "RUN YOU BLOODY IDIOT RUN!" when the guy was trying to tell them to stop the attack. not a single person didnt have a tear in their eye....
Mel Gibson is Australian! He went to NIDA, which is the University I will be going to In sydney, it's a Drama university that Cate Blanchett went to as well! I don't know what you sound like, but me and everyone i know sound pretty much like what they do in the movie... and by the way, we can never EVER get history right, because history is never properly recorded like on video tapes and stuff...
@Medusa0999 What do you mean? War changes everything. The Nazis are dead. The Japanese Empire is no more. Korea and Vietnam have the governments they deserve and the American Empire will end as soon as we lose the next war. Every significant change in human development has occured through war or it's effects. Don't be simple because you don't like it.
What a trivial and baseless accusation. You make me laugh. The ending simply caught us off guard since he ran out without his gun, got shot, and the credits roll immediately afterwards. "People who use 'lol' tend to be retards." That's a great statement. The connection between an acronym and mental state couldn't be clearer.
@allyxo1 It's a shame that you deplore racism by using an equally tasteless slur. Still, I agree that trying to win an argument on here is not only impossible, it's moronic.
Every time I watch this scene, it reduces me to tears. Lest we forget
And here we are being told to take government injections or you can't earn a living. Fuck this country and every sheep in it.
Same today. ANZAC Day 2024. Lest we forget.

This part makes me cry like a baby.

what is it to be Australian?
This is what it bloody is to be Australian mate!

Perfect use of Adagio.
The first casualty of war is innocence.
I cried when Archy died...
I had a panic attack watching this ending once. Seriously messed up. Such is war.
a great, powerful movie, one of my top war movies!
Beautifully stark movie!

@dengeist i think him being weaponless is a symbol of how hopeless it all was.
Holly yes. It was also him realising that the weapon would slow him down. They would never be able to retrieve it, and he knew he was dead. So he ran with all his heart.
This movie, OMG!
they died bravely but it was a pointless attack in a pointless battle of a pointless war
grrgrrgrrrgrrgrrgrgr I’m not going to disagree with you about the war being “pointless” but this battle was truly a failure. Sending in soldiers for a lost cause. Wasting their lives on the wrong beach, with a strategy that could never work.

This was a great scene, they knew they weren't coming back. That had to be rough anybody notice that Archie doesn't even have a gun?
Lest we forget
war never changes
@fieldmor77
The generals in that battle WERE Australians. They just had british accents, which wasn't that unusual at the time.
God save us.
If the film was to make australia look good who cares it was still a kick ass film.
And the film pearl harbour made out that the enigma code was broken in USA..

@allyxo1 very well said
@kitkatkristy33 yeah we just finished watching it yesterday, every one was screaming "RUN YOU BLOODY IDIOT RUN!" when the guy was trying to tell them to stop the attack. not a single person didnt have a tear in their eye....
Archie would never have been killed in the charge on the Turkish trench if that army doctor hadn't passed Snowy.
Fark! :(
@CullenClanGirl Haha xD We thought the ending was crap and a few people said "Is that it?"
@kitkatkristy33 BAHAHA yes! there was like silence for a second then someone said, 'did you pause it miss?' XD
and that the americans won pearl harbours
@CullenClanGirl Hahah! xD
The simple point is this..... the Australians were very brave....
Mel Gibson is Australian!
He went to NIDA, which is the University I will be going to In sydney, it's a Drama university that Cate Blanchett went to as well!
I don't know what you sound like, but me and everyone i know sound pretty much like what they do in the movie...

This would make me ashamed to be British if I was even remotely
concerned with such bollocks.
To sleep perchance to Zzzz.........
