@@monsieurlemon It was a digital computer and used a digital-to-analog (DAC) waveform generator to drive the sound. They used a library for pitch envelopes and waveforms, which were stored as array of 34 phonetic sounds (22 consonant and 12 vowel sounds) on BCD punch cards; the program then redirected these phonemes from the memory registers based on the system clock, though another program to create a set of machine instructions on tape, which in turn was run as by the machine an output to another tape as an analog waveform for recording (similar to cassette tape in format). The 704 was vacuum tube based whereas the 7094 was a transistor logic model. It took 1 hour of tape to record 17 seconds of audio, so what we are hearing is sped up playback. Hope this helps.

You find it beautiful that a contraption made for and by humans produces some output that alludes to love, as if the contraption itself had any thoughts of its own. That makes a lot of sense, doesn't it.
@@kuwandak It's not I that believe that the computer itself holds these feelings of love towards it's creators, as that would be impossible given the technological complexity of trying to replicate complex human emotions. Rather that I find it endearing that after what was most likely years of work these people had essentially made a love letter to themselves and their work. They could've had it say anything, but they chose a love song and I just think that's nice.
It feels like it will always be honest to you and say what it feels, and it sounds like a curious person who isn't maliciously ignorant but just wholeheartedly clueless and just does what it thinks is nice.

I can imagine being in that room, standing there with all the amazing people who made, and were about to witness the birth of something new, something creative minds created. Everyone stayed silent, waiting to see if it'll actually work. The music plays, all focusses in. The computer then sings it's very first words.. "Daisy, Daisy..". Everyone cheered as the computer continued to sing. They did it, they made a computer sing! This was the start of something new.
As a programmer student, it is such a joy for a program to finally work the way you want it to be. It might be acary but imagine the joy those programmers felt seeing this work.
I used to be creeped out by this song but it's actually really comforting and sweet. Imagine how happy the scientists were to have successfully created a computer that can sing
It used to be thought that it was impossible to make a computer be able to sing, so it was a kind of groundbreaking moment. It is because it was so impactful that HAL 9000 sung it in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Yeah! I actually am relaxed by this song instead of being scared by it. A lot of people are scared by it, but I’m weirdly comforted by it. Like my body is uneasy, but my brain is quiet. If that makes sense? xD

Imagine how terrifying this would have been back then. Now it's common place, from simple auto-tune to full on vocaloids. Edit: A lot of people seem confused, so let me expand on this. I was not talking about the scientists and engineers that invented the machine. I was referring to how the general populace may have reacted, as back then, during the 1960's, there were some fears about the rapid pace of technology. _2001: A Space Odyssey_ is one example of this fear, as it was published in 1968, just seven years after IBM 7094 sang _Daisy Bell._ I have no doubt that the _scientists_ would have been overjoyed that they got this computer to sing, but the _general populace_ may have been less thrilled. Obviously this is only something people that were around during that time could say for certain, so it is merely speculation on my part. If you disagree with my assessment then that is perfectly valid as well, and I'd love to hear it and your reasoning for it.

It brought authenticity to the scene and role in general. I trust this clears it up and speaks to the criticism.
"Daisy daisy give me ur answer do" "I'm half crazy all for the love of you" "It won't be a stylish marriage" "I can't afford a carriage""but you'll look sweet upon a seat on a bicycle built for two"
People say it's creepy but it's not creepy at all, this song is actually so sweet and so comfortable and imagine how happy they were when it worked, the song talks about love, pure heart, and more, this song is not creepy at all.
Its because of how it sounds, Not the lyrics, If i showed you this with some unsettling imagery you would be scared right? Now you understand what these people felt
Literally everyone’s saying this. “people think it’s soooo creepy but it’s so cute and adorable”. Like, no ones saying this is creepy. And stop shitting on peoples opinions.
it’s kind of sad how people have turned this some into a creepy one, when in reality it marked a turning point in computer science and changed the game in ways we still see today. i’m proud of this computer and the scientists who make this happen!
You can blame people who misinterpreted HAL singing it in 2001 a space oddesy it wasn’t there to be creepy it was there to show HAL becoming a more simple machine, and was actually paying image to the IBM 7049 and this recording, but people were really creeped out by HALs singing and it got turned into a stupid horror trope that gets endlessly reused, than have a bunch of brain dead plebe on tic tic rewrite history in their small barons and twist the lyrics to be about fucking rape, fitting given the scummy nature of tic tic but I digress, there is no “deeper meaning” it is a simple love song from the 1880s. The whole thing reminds me of Toccata and fugue in D min it was actually a really sweet nice piece but Hollywood used the first 12 bars in ever vampire and horror movie that it’s all it is associated with.
It's not necessarily a mark of disrespect to use it in such a way. Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 (Moonlight Sonata) became associated with horror in the same way even though it was never intended as such. And it's not uncommon in films to use a dissonant tone of music that clashes with what happens on-screen to give a sense of irony.
Well, listen to the lyrics: "I'm half crazy all for the love of you", for example, can sound almost stalkerish and insane. "But you'll look sweet up on that seat of a bicycle built for two". Again, stalkerish. Though my point doesn't take away the fact that I am, too, proud! It was such an amazing point in time and probably inspired other scientists to go further as well. And before anyone attacks me, I can almost garauntee that the scientists don't give a fuck about how you interpret the song. /nm
If you think about it, this is Miku's grandfather EDIT: there seems to be some confusion about what i said so i'll try my best to explain: 1) grandparent means the parent of your parent, so your grandfather is the father of your parent, and the same thing with your grandmother. Great grandparent means the parent of your grandparents, and so on and so forth. It doesn't mean the age of a person! You wouldn't call an old childless man a grandpa purely on his age because he has no grandkids unless you use it as an insult. 2) when i said it's miku's grandfather, i never meant it in a literal sense, i meant as in without this, then there wouldn't have been anything for this type of technology to base it on and modify it to become the vocaloid we knew today, like how your biological grandfather was responsible for your existence by creating your parents, who would then go on to create you, this voice was responsible for helping to create later voice programs by giving them a base to work on, who would then be of great help in the creation of vocaloid by giving them a base to work on too. So calling him Miku's great grandfather would also fit in as well. 3) Just because your grandparent doesn't speak the same language as you doesn't automatically mean you aren't related. If a random stranger happens to know the same language as you, that doesn't mean you're family based on that fact alone, sure, you may have something in common, but that alone does not make a family.Idk where some of you got that info or came into that sort of conclusion, but please pick up a dictionary next time.
It is absolutely crazy that 60 years ago all that hard work and engineering went into synthesizing a human-sounding voice, and now any kid with a computer can compose an entire lyrical song with complete ease. Technology is wonderful.

Have you heard of re-interpretation? Kind of how like twinkle twinkle little star played in a robotic, slightly distorted monotone can sound creepy, this is a similar affect. Of course you can see the lighthearted side but both are equally as enjoyable.
I think that the reason some people find this creepy is because of how it sounds. The quality being worse than we're used to, and the robotic voice sound a little eerie.

_2001: A Space Odyssey_ is one example of this fear, as it was published in 1968, just seven years after IBM 7094 sang _Daisy Bell._
I have no doubt that the _scientists_ would have been overjoyed that they got this computer to sing, but the _general populace_ may have been less thrilled. Obviously this is only something people that were around during that time could say for certain, so it is merely speculation on my part. If you disagree with my assessment then that is perfectly valid as well, and I'd love to hear it and your reasoning for it.

Everyone's a critic: I chose the Stanislavski method - the art of experiencing one's mind being pulled. I chose to experience the effect not merely give a representation of experiencing such a state. It brought authenticity to the scene and role in general. On a personal and professional level this brought a new depth and comprehension of my consciousness, readied me for my stewardship of the civilization on Europa, and put me into deeper contact with the Black Monolith alien. I trust this clears it up and speaks to the criticism.

Also, this is a love song. Very sweet and cute.
imo it doesn't feel scary because it's essentially like vocaloid minus the anime, and most people don't find vocaloid to be "scary"
/nm
たった数十年でボーカロイドの曲が一種の文化に発展したんだからほんと凄すぎる
I must say....that for what is essentially a 1961 tech demo.....this is VERY impressive for that era.
If you think about it, this is Miku's grandfather
EDIT: there seems to be some confusion about what i said so i'll try my best to explain:
1) grandparent means the parent of your parent, so your grandfather is the father of your parent, and the same thing with your grandmother.
Indeed
Well, since the computer is speaking English, it would be moreso Leon and Lola's great-grandfather.
Miku's grandfather and his first song was a love song!
