First computer to sing - Daisy Bell

- "Daisy Bell" was composed by Harry Dacre in 1892. In 1961, the IBM 7094 became the first computer to sing, singing the song Daisy Bell. Vocals were programmed by John Kelly and Carol Lockbaum and the accompaniment was programmed by Max Mathews. This performance was the inspiration for a similar scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

pure analog computing, too
@@monsieurlemon It was a digital computer and used a digital-to-analog (DAC) waveform generator to drive the sound. They used a library for pitch envelopes and waveforms, which were stored as array of 34 phonetic sounds (22 consonant and 12 vowel sounds) on BCD punch cards; the program then redirected these phonemes from the memory registers based on the system clock, though another program to create a set of machine instructions on tape, which in turn was run as by the machine an output to another tape as an analog waveform for recording (similar to cassette tape in format). The 704 was vacuum tube based whereas the 7094 was a transistor logic model. It took 1 hour of tape to record 17 seconds of audio, so what we are hearing is sped up playback. Hope this helps.

The technological achievement of making a computer sing in 1961 is astonishing, considering that computers back then simply had no off-the-shelf capabilities for that kind of thing. Not just the hardware and the software, but the whole theoretical framework behind speech synthesis and computer-generated music had to be invented from scratch to allow this. To make one of these imposing electronic machines whimsical and charming at the same time took it to a whole other level. This was a brilliant sneak-preview demonstration of what computers were capable of.

Hello fellow moonwalker
@@legendarymusicisforever3697 hehe
Yay another Moonwalker ❤️
I can't believe people came up to the idea that the song was about a guy kidnapping a girl named Daisy, when it's just about a computer singing a love song.
PEOPLE REALLY THOUGHT THIS? WHAT
What? I thought it was just a guy madly in love with a girl named Daisy then proposes to her and she says yes. The dude isn't that rich though and can't afford a carriage or fancy wedding stuff so he just takes her on a beautiful bike ride and has a day full of fun activities for her. This song is so cute and reminds me of a old TV show that's black and white with classical music. Why do they think it's about a dude kidnapping a girl?
*WHAT*
yeah fucking dumbasses

i find it rather wholesome. the IBM 7094's just trying his best, and succeeding.
Nobody is calling it creepy, Everybody is saying the same thing as you, Just hating on them instead of stating their opinion
no the melody is unsettling even if the lyrics are cute
@@user-jc8by2wj8g People are very much calling it creepy! It's just that as humans we like to feel "in" and with a group. So when one group is teased, we want to feel part of the dominant group. So the people reason get more likes and get pushed to the top.
i wouldn't say "trying".
Have you heard of re-interpretation? Kind of how like twinkle twinkle little star played in a robotic, slightly distorted monotone can sound creepy, this is a similar affect. Of course you can see the lighthearted side but both are equally as enjoyable.
I don't get why everyone keeps calling it crazy it's so sweet and imagine being the first computer that sung, I'm proud of that computer
I'm proud of them too
Well, it _did_ say in the song that he _was_ half crazy.

To think this is what started the chain of events that led to Hatsune Miku
"OMG this is so scary and cursed!"

right ☺️ what started it all
That’s where miku, gumi, rin,Meiko and other vocaloids started
The beginning of a legacy? Apparently so!
Me,a backrooms fan: PARTY GOERS!!!
Calling it vocaloid isn't better
People are calling it creepy, but just imagine being there when it happened. I can just see a group of people gathered around a computer, smiling and laughing while they listen to it sing, after hours of experimentation trying to make it happen. This was something amazing back then.
And it still is fantastic, i hate when people say this is creepy, no vocaloid will be here without this and this is so soothing and calming and its a token in time really, its absolutely fascinating on how we get to look back at these things and see how much its changed and how it was back then, they must have been so proud to invent a voice singing without living or dead.
exactly
@@juststorm8674 I know it was an enormous accomplishment back then, and it really was something magical. However, I can see why people think this is unsettling. There's probably a better psychological explanation for it somewhere, but it's something about the tone of voice and how old it sounds that enduces a feeling of anxiety in people who weren't from that era.
Someone hasn't seen 2001: A Space Odessey
I also find the music itself without the vocals kind of cheery and cute.
Miku wouldn’t exist without this lol

Everyone's a critic: I chose the Stanislavski method - the art of experiencing one's mind being pulled. I chose to experience the effect not merely give a representation of experiencing such a state. It brought authenticity to the scene and role in general. On a personal and professional level this brought a new depth and comprehension of my consciousness, readied me for my stewardship of the civilization on Europa, and put me into deeper contact with the Black Monolith alien. I trust this clears it up and speaks to the criticism.
