You know if you're will to wait and pay enough you can convince Athens to join you as a confederation, a important city taken with no valuable losses

Note, it is far better to lose your helot units than it is your Spartans. I tend to use them last, along with the general. Helots can be replaced easily, and can do quite a lot of damage if you use them knowing they will perish. Greek fights tend to be slower than most. Absolutely make use of phalanx, but keep in mind, they will be defensive in a fight unless you order them to attack back, so say you have a static line or in a choke point in a city, and enemy attacks your phalanx. Your units will not fight back much at all until you tell them to, specifically one click order will tell them to attack in place, double clicking they will use their Mass to push forwards a bit and attack at the same time(can look really cool several units doing it in unison)

    Also also:
    a) enemy usually does not attack on the field of battle unless you have the ranged advantage
    b) in DEI especially spear units are super weak. You will have use phalanx formation to hold the line and use javelins and melee infantry (I believe there is some pretty good axe/javelin mercenary infantry in northern Greece) to flank and kill
    c) in DEI food is super important
    Sorry for the spam

It's only challenging if you try to keep the empire intact from the outset. WRE is painfully easy if you focus on one core province and just pretend the rest of the empire doesn't exist. Focus on an easily defensible province and build it up letting the rest collapse (if that even happens). Once you pimp out a province, you can just engage in a reconquest of the empire.
I usually make north africa my home base, build it up, then focus on Italy. By that point most of Gaul, Britain and Hispanian Roman territories have fallen, so you just play it like any TW game at this point and just engage on a reconquest.
With that said, trying to keep it all together, while actually improving your position is most certainly a challenge. It's just far easier to let it mostly fall while focusing on a starting province of your choosing to act as a springboard for reconquest.

Excellent to see. Be aware of reform scripts. There are two for Greeks. They are turn triggered scripts, or until you have a certain level imperium. These will also increase first class population, so when I play Sparta my first goal is to secure Hellas province, and Macedonia province within 30 turns. Good luck. They are really fun to play with

my good friend, what a glorious day to find you again making videos and more about Rome II tw... for your fortune I am a veteran player of this and its DLC; so if you want here are some good elvish tips:
*First; take care of the balance in each city, because you won't be able to build the same buildings in all of them. Example: Cities near the sea, ports, mountains, mines and in many cases some cities have their own productions to offer good deals.
*When you conquer a new city leave a general with his respective garrison, public order is a problem with factions like Sparta because if your culture does not prevail over the others there will be revolts and the factions you conquer will return. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT, leave a general with troops in some regions, towns and cities to improve public order, you can also create buildings that improve order, but these do not generate income.
*On the other hand, do not neglect the food, above the bush, you have the income and the food that you generate per shift, it is perhaps the most important thing. without food or money you will not have armies...
*agents such as spies, champions and priests can help you a lot if you don't want to start a war with a faction, attacking an enemy by subterfuge may cause a revolution and so you can take the territory after troop attrition.
*On the other hand, having your capital near the sea... and it's very important. BEWARE OF THE ENEMY FLEET, many armies can land on the coast of Sparta.
*You can make a lot of money from commercial buildings and from trading, mining, and even exporting goods to distant nations. The more I trade, the more money...
*So always check the buildings that you can build in the regions, whether they are public, commercial or military... the key to the armies is in their administration.
Note: also be careful with the generals you recruit and the internal politics of the faction... there can be a civil war if one of the two sides wins... I know it sounds a little bit explanatory, but you will understand when you see the screen the faction...
That's all the elvish advice I can give you for now, a big hug from Argentina and remember: "...May the stars shine to guide you, to the end of your journey..."

You really don't need to use your hoplites against enemy hoplites without formation. Only when flanking. Better just move the whole line of hoplies in formation in order to engage the enemy without giving the "attack" order. If the hoplites are in the formation you can double-click with right button to make them make a step forward, use it when you fill you can overturn the enemy unit by morale. Also use the button to restore the formation in the botton right.
And don't get too many troops of 1st class, you will never be able to replenish them. Watch for good mercenaries, they are very good in Greece region.
Skirmishers are great to fight against hoplites, but don't waste their ammo on firing in the front of the unit, in this mod units are very resistant to ranged fire.
Cavalry is way less powerful in comparison with Medieval 2, even in rear charge.
Here are some quick tips, hope they will help, cause DEI is very specific mode, especially fighting (especially with hoplites =))

    Also:
Homoioi -> the famous badass spartan warriors, full Spartan citizens, translates roughly to equals
Perioikoi -> foreign (still Greeks) citizens that mainly focus on trade and manufacturing, have no say in Spartan matters (something like immigrants)
Hellotes: a whole Greek tribe the Spartans had enslaved since time immemorial (Messinians), hard labour and farming, lower even than slaves in other Greek city states
Xenoi: literally means foreigners, not exactly sure what they represent, think of it as foreign conquered populace
