One of my favorites too, together with Thousand Lakes, Karelian Isthmus and Skyforger. Need to give Halo a few more listens, there was no initial ignition so far, but well, this ist no "Take it or leave it " Hardcore record. Maybe it grows on me.

This is the most bizarre Amorphis album ranking I've ever seen so kudos for that.
Amorphis just blend melodeath, folk metal, and prog metal so well. They are super consistent and I can't wait for Halo next week. Here's my tier list.
S - Tales from the Thousand Lakes, Silent Waters, Skyforger
A - Eclipse, The Beginning of Times, Under the Red Cloud
B - The Kaerlian Isthmus, Elegy, Tuonela, Circle, Queen of Time
C - Am Universum, Far from the Sun
It’s been growing on me
I would put Elegy and Queen of Time to S tier. I think that Elegy is pure art and best in whole, but somehow I ended up to listen to Queen of Time more than any other album. Also Queen of Time was the first Tomi era album, that I embraced wholly. Tomi's singing has developed massively, and nowadays he is one of the best singers in metal that I know.

This video inspired me to listen to all of their albums as I was only familiar with the first two. I enjoyed so much more of this discography than I expected and there's not a bad album here IMO.

When I bought Circle, it was just a gamble. I saw it in the shelves in a store near me at the time. And I just bought it, put it in my cd-player in my car, and just went for a spin. I come from a rural area in the Netherlands, just by the German border and it's truly stunning out there. So this album reminds me of home. Little side note: At the moment I am living in Papua New Guinea with my wife, so I am far away from home. So Circle gives me a special meaning. And the follow up Under the Red Cloud is amazing too.

Dude thank you for this video! I had never listened to this band but decided to check out Halo and I'm blown away. It is freaking epic sounding and just has an energy to it that I am loving. I'm working my way back through the discography and am enjoying the hell out of this ride. 🔥

I love these tier lists. I like Queen of Time a lot more than you do but that could be because that was my intro album to Amorphis. If you like heavy folk metal type stuff you should give the band Ignea a listen

Good tier list there. I do agree with most of it. Respectfully disagree on their more softer albums like Silent Waters, Am Universum, etc but I get it. Tbh those albums introduce me to the band. Especially since I listen to songs like Alone, Silent Waters, Shatters Within, etc a lot. But I agree with the rest. Skyforger is a classic album, probably my favourite overall Amorphis album. Anyway good tier list dude! 😊🤘🏻

Amorphis are my all time favorite band, so this was an interesting watch, as I don't see very many people doing album tier lists. That being said, I thoroughly disagreed with every decision but Far From the Sun. Good vid though, again. 👌

Thanks for covering them! This is actually my favorite band of the last 10 years! To me, they’ve been one of the most consistent groups out there. I pretty much agree with your rankings, only thing is, I see the thread that connects Under the Red Cloud, Queen of Time, and Halo. To me, it’s the same level of songwriting, how much of a grower each is, is the difference. Halo is the biggest grower of all, so I really like it, but something is delaying the gratification, when it would normally click with me. Perhaps it’ll grow on you as well!

I agree that their 2010s are their best, but you are underestimating how influential they were back in late 90s, as well as their first 3-4 albums were some of the best melo-death, taking the genre outside Gothenburg. Plus Tales was one of the two first metal albums I ever owned, after a friend said to me: "you remember that song you loved Punish My Heaven, there a band that has an album just for you", so I might be a little biased here.
I’m not discounting that at all. These are just my thoughts based purely on my own tastes regarding the music itself 👍🏻
@@MetalTrenches I guess growing up in Europe in the 80s and 90s versus the states in 00s and 10s gives a different perspective.
I was there when Tales first came out. And back then there was nothing quite like it.
The folky phrasing and the growling vocals of the first three records are my favourite characteristics of Amorphis
Please do a Soilwork tier list and review, I know they have a long catalog but a good majority of it is good listening

I just listened to Halo. My opinion is a bit different then yours. To me it's S tier. What an enjoyable album to listen, to me it felt like being on a journey. Heavy, but still catcy, with hints of prog. All stuff I enjoy a lot. And I am a fan of Katatonia, so if something sounds like that band, then Iĺ'l probably love it. Up there with Circle! Disclaimer, I have never been an Amorphis fan boy. But when I like stuff, then I'll call it out. Maybe I should start a review channel myself ;)

Nice video, and I can agree with most of what you said... although I would rank Eclipse and Queen of Time a little higher. I especially enjoyd Queen of Time. Halo just arrived today.. Imho, Amorphis usually delivers, great Band, great Albums - love what these guys are doing!
Halo’s been a bit of a grower
Great list, my dude! I became an Amorphis fan with my first listen being Eclipse, so for me, that album in your ranking system will always be A tier. I went back and listened to their earlier albums afterwards, and for the most part, I agree with those rankings as well. Far From the Sun is 10, 000% their worst album(as far as consistency goes), I, and it seems an overwhelming amount of the majority of Amorphis fans agree. I'd even go as far as to give it its own category, far below the rest; BUT, it did do one thing that lasted the band til this day; give them that recognizable Tyr logo as a staple trademark of the band(even seen on Queen of Time if you look carefully(at that AWESOME album cover). I'm surprised you gave Circle S tier; if for no other reason than most of the critic sites around the time gave it a lower score than previous albums, and I'll never understand why, I adored this incredible album, and it came to me at a time when I was grieving over a monumental loss in my life. To me, its probably their #1 most consistent album, followed by its sister album, Under the Red Cloud - just a masterpiece album! Like with Circle, this one just spoke to me, and it deserves every single bit of praise it got since its release! As for Queen of Time, I agree, it was quite a step down from the previous two albums, not bad by any means, if not a bit inconsistent, purposely not as heavy(thats in no means a strike against their more slower, equally as beautiful ballads), that album's ex outro(the Japanese Edition)'s Honeyflow is very, very good! As of now, I havent yet fully listened to their current album, Halo, but eagerly await a good time and mood, for it to sink in. Tmv~

That's an interesting content. Amorphis is kinda my alltime favorite band(i feel it still is) and i agree with you alot, mainly Circle which feels sad but sooo epic and UTRC to bring happiness, these ones S tier indeed. Eclipse and Silent Waters are Btier or above for me, i really love Joutsen's vocals and from these to 2015(i miss his midrange vocals, Weaving the Incantation for example) he really shines. I may agree about TFTTL and Elegy, but this tier list doesn't have Magic and Mayhem which i might put in S instead. And the 2 last albums sounds great but somewhat off. About Pasi's records, i used to enjoy in the past when i was young but today i'm trying to listen XD. Overall, great job. Really good points of view.

The debut is easily at least A tier. Amorphis and especially Unleashed did it a decade before those hacks of Amon Amarth.

Then there are good pop-produced metal album but pretty standard.
I first listened to all Amorphis albums when they were the thing of the day and I appreciate their moments on the edge of rock (The Bee) much more than you do, so my list would be very different to yours. Karelian isthmus, Tales and Elegy are all a clear S-tier. But then the question comes - where do we put Skyforger, Red cloud, Silent Waters and Queen of time? S++ probably. Am universum is C, the rest is moving between A and B depending on my current mood. I don't feel Circle being high in A - just solid A, Beginning of time may be on the edge of A and S. Yep I like the cheesier face of Amorphis.

IMO, Amorphis doesnt have any terrible albums but some are defibitely better than others. Also, isnt it ironic that the albums in D tier also have the most boring cover art? I find that more often than not, the amount of detail put in the album cover art reflets the quality of the music.

@@MetalTrenches True, there are exceptions. Deftones are one of my favorite bands but most of their album covers are terrible.
While I disagree massively with you on some of your points on the older albums, your thoughts on Circle, UTRC, and Queen of Time are 100% in line with my own. My opinion on Halo is that it sounds like a computer listened to the previous 3 albums and generated amorphis_music.mp3 from an algorithm. I will say, Halo (the song) actually turned out to be very catchy for me, but I guess that's just how the amorphis algorithm works.

gotta agree with you that circle and red cloud were their best efforts and the following album was a bit of a snoozer comparatively. Definitely one of my favorite metal bands ever, even though they had their low points i still think their whole discography is worth visiting multiple times, partly because they always tried different things throughout their career.

Elegy must be at S Tier+ , it's a gamechanger album...as is Tales

Skyforger, circle and queen of time are S tier for me. Many like under the red cloud but I just didn't. I found most of the album just filler. Queen of time is much better. Skip that terrible wrong direction and album has only great songs.

No one ever agrees 100% on a discography
Okay, okay... Amorphis is cool and all, but did I hear you call Nickelback "Alternative Country"?! I don't even hate Nickelback but that's an insult to the current crop of badass alternative/outlaw country musicians out there these days! Jason Isbell, Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson, Chris Ross, Morgan Wade, Charley Crockett, Benjamin Tod, Shooter Jennings... The list is approaching endless. Real country music is alive and well, fuck Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean. There are still REAL, brutal and truthful songwriters with tight-as-hell backing bands absolutely killing it on the road every night.
There. That's my PSA of the day for the "everything but metal sucks" crowd.
...Also... Pre-Photograph Nickelback slaps. They weren't always the most hated band on the planet. Deep cuts do exist.

Contrarian opinion: Karelian Isthmus is their only good album. As soon as they added clean vocals and stopped being heavy, they sucked.
Strange ranking and one that tells me the critic has had a very different experience with the band and, to be blunt, I hope new Amorphis fans don't use this as a guide to get into them. Not many would have Circle in the upper half of the catalogue, let alone S-Tier. A lot of folks might agree it is the 3rd worst album - everyone agrees AU and FFTS are the dogs in an otherwise super strong career. Beginning of TImes likewise usually is rated as barely superior to Circle. Conversely, Eclipse is often seen as one of, if not the, best records they have done. Certainly a terrific comeback and broadly the template for everything since. If you are a bit older though, and were there when Tales came out, you know what a game changer it was. I am not sure other records like Eclipse or UTRC are NOT better, but Tales is flawless for what it is and up there with Left Hand Path, Altars of Madness and Slaughter of the Soul in terms of influence on metal since.
Opinions are more varied than most people are willing to admit. This is mine. Never claimed it to be anything more than that. People should embrace differences instead of taking them personally imo. Makes discussion more fun. I don’t want to live in a world where everyone likes the same stuff.
Is Halo grow up on you?

Far from the Sun deserves D tier, and Am Universum is pretty low too, but to put Eclipse at D tier? The fuck? The improvement over Far from the Sun is COLOSSAL. Silent Waters is even better, and the Karelian Isthmus is a slow death metal masterpiece, so both deserve A or S tier. Queen of Time deserves higher than B, as does Elegy.
Overall a pretty bad list from someone to whom Amorphis isn't really their band.
Anytime someone says someone’s list is a “bad list” I am reminded that people don’t understand just how subjective music is.
