      Yeah I definitely could have spent time swapping jets on the Mikuni to get it dialed. It was 95 degrees outside and I drove 3 hours to the track so I'd prefer to spend my time riding not taking the carb apart haha just personal preference. At the end of the day the Lectron gives me more time riding the bike and less time wrenching on the bike :)

    • @ottokirk2325
      @ottokirk2325 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is commonly the case with the Mikuni. Some ppl don't want to keep a big arse journal of every atmospheric condition that can be encountered, just so they have a dialed Mikuni. I exaggerate...a little. This new Pro ver. has a dial on-the-fly pilot jet circuit added and an upgraded gasket solution. More std carb Bark character perhaps. Good on Lectron for being open to adding a jet circuit.

    I have a 2023 YZ85LW that sometimes runs good and has great power, but other times t runs like absolute junk. I can't identify a pattern to when it happens. But whatever it is it seems to be effected by the spark plug, carburetor, and fuel, because if I change one of those things out or clean it, it will temporarily run really well again. Any one have any ideas what this problem could be? I've been riding 4 strokes all my life. If I can't figure it out and fix it then I might just sell it and be done with riding. Its way too much work and money for me right now and I'm fed up with it.

      @@DerekHallman now that you say that yes it seems like it does that. Sometimes once it starts bogging I can throttle it out and it'll stop but here lately its just been dying when I try to do that. And then when I remove the spark plug it has a bunch of oil around it. It was very rich when I got it so I leaned the fuel out all the way to 40:1 even though the manual says to do 30:1 for it. I had someone tell me it was the fuel causing the problem since I used 91 in it instead of 93. But it has 93 in it now and its still having the same exact problem.

      @DerekHallman  ปีที่แล้ว

      The previous STIC modded Keihin carb I was using became very frustrating to deal with. When it was perfectly tuned it ran amazing but you had to run it a little lean to get it to feel right otherwise it was so rich it was unrideable. It ended up melting my piston within 10ish hours so I swapped back to the Mikuni and now the new Lectron Pro Series. The STIC carb might have had a little more overrev power at the very top of rpm range but the Lectron has better low/mid grunt. The STIC carb required constant tuning, opening the carb to change jets and needles and my Lectrons almost never need adjusting. The reliability and ease of adjustment the Lectron provides gives me more time riding and less time wrenching, which makes it the better carb in my opinion.

  • @mxslick50
    @mxslick50 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ironic that you uploaded this... I started racing in 1990 on a YZ 125. In 1991 I bought a YZ 250 (because that was the year of Yamaha's famous 125 engine case screwup.) A well known pro of the era was helping me with my riding back then, and he got pissed off when I showed up with that 250, telling me "You're not a 250 rider." (He never elaborated on that, when I asked WTF are you talking about, he just said "Figure it out, Slick.")
    I raced that bike for two seasons to a 6th and 10th overall in my favorite series. But that pro had said I would be slower on the 250 (and at the start of the 1991 season, before that series, I was..by 5-7 seconds a lap.)
    Anyways, over the years I had stopped racing, but still worked in the mx biz in several capacities (Marketing, announcing, starter, etc.) Finally in 2007 I bought a 2000 YZ250 (after trying for over a year to find a decent, used YZ125 that wasn't over $6,000. Every decent one was selling close to retail of a NEW bike, and sold quickly.) I rode that bike and did one race (long story that I won't go into here) for many years, until about 2015.
    Fast forward to 2022, and I FINALLY found the bike I wanted to get..my buddy's 2006 YZ125. It had a blown top end, so we negotiated a great deal and I bought it in Sept. I did some rides on it, tried the Red Bull Day In The Dirt (ended up not racing due to suspension issues, and not having raced for 14 years.) In April of this year (2023) I got the suspension done, made some other changes and finally have the bike set up right for me.
    But, and the point of all this, is I have discovered that I don't know how to ride a 125 properly anymore. On the 250, I could be lazy with shifting and get away with it. Not so on the 125, it hates me right now as I don't keep it on the pipe. (My buddy was a fast kid, and the bike hates a slow old guy riding it now.)
    I finally now understand what that pro meant, as now I need to re-learn how to ride the 125 again. It's a process, but I am slowly getting it back.
    tldr; Guy who started on and was best suited for 125 two stroke gets 250 instead for many years and discovers that a pro was right. Now have a 125 and have to re-learn how to ride it on the pipe.

    • @AdrianGL301
      @AdrianGL301 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice points, and it could have been worse if you switched to 4 stroke.
      I had a RMZ250 and between motos a guy came with a CRF450 that he bought brand new to try the sport. Later on the day he told me "take my bike and do a couple laps and tell me your opinion, I dont know if the bike is running good im not much into bikes and have no idea"
      I did the laps on his 450 and I think I was faster on his bike without even trying, I had to only twist the throttle and use a couple gears. To make the same laptimes on the 250F i had to try twice as hard. Not to mention on a 125. When I moved from the 125 to the 250F i felt like Barcia 🤣

    That was your first mistake, and shows that you don't actually know what you're doing (that's ok, most people are clueless when it comes to jetting). Glad that the Lectron carb happened to be jetted correctly for your bike and location, but there's nothing wrong with Mikuni carbs.

    • @DerekHallman
      @DerekHallman  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      KTM provides a very detailed jetting chart in the owners manual. You're telling me the engineers who make the the bike don't know what they are doing? That's just silly man c'mon. If someone new to the sport goes and buys a brand new KTM 2 stroke they shouldn't have to ditch the manufacturer recommendations and become a jetting master just to get the bike to run correctly - that sucks! Anyways, I've spent countless hours researching and testing different needles and jets. I've put plenty of time on 5 different carbs on this same bike including the Mikuni and a Keihin. I know how to jet a carb, but if I wanted to waste my day tinkering with needles I'd sew a sweater instead haha.

    What gearing are you running on your 150?

    • @DerekHallman
      @DerekHallman  ปีที่แล้ว

      stock 13/48 but I think I want to try going up a size on the rear. What gearing do you use?

    • @LookProRideSlowMX
      @LookProRideSlowMX ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DerekHallman I've been running the stock 13/48 but I have a 46 rear that I'm going to install soon. Stock feels too punchy in second to corner smoothly and 3rd runs out a little too fast for me, so I'm hoping the 46 smooths things out and lets me hang 3rd longer. Motocross actions test from 2022 said riders liked 14/49 and 14/50 so I wanted to get close to that without messing with the countershaft sprocket.
