This still totally amazes me since discovering it months ago. (last year). How it's not gone viral is beyond me. Every time i watch it i try to focus on a new box each time, but another Dan always distracts me.

Whether you've sung this before like I did in high school choir or just heard it for the first time, this incredible feat is mind-blowing. I sang Soprano & know how much work the Hallelujah Chorus is just singing one section. I can't even fathom singing all 4 sections nor 274 takes to complete this amazing masterpiece. The bits of humor Dan threw in for people to catch only make it even better. Sometimes, I wonder if Dan just has moments when he thinks, "Eh, screw it... why not?!" Lol.

Dan não estava esperando resultados diferentes. A repetição foi um esforço deliberado e focado, ao invés de uma tentativa fútil de mudança. Insano.

Each of the 24 Dans was sung separately and distinctly (at least three times each, possibly more). That means that he ended up with 24 x 3 = 72 tracks (at least) in which Dan sang the words (with notes and rhythms that are slightly different for each part/group of six Dans). Personally, in one interview he was doing, I heard Dan say that in this one he actually sang each part at least FOUR times, which means he sang at least 96 tracks that then had to be screened, reduced to the 24 that he liked the best, then mixed and mastered. WOW!
I used to "run the parts" for the choirs in which I sang. That means that I had to learn all the parts by heart. I can sight-read, but a lot of people can't. So I needed to be able to listen to what the basses THOUGHT they were supposed to sing, compare that to the sheet music, and then teach them the correct way to put their own part into rhythmic action (yes...I can sing bass...I never LOST that range due to the rheumatoid arthritis), holding strongly against the other parts. Then I would do the same for the tenors, then for the altos, and finally, for the sopranos (which was where I usually sang). I would have been the lady at the top left, back in those days, with the highest part to sing. It's not easy for experienced female sopranos! Dan, however, does every...single...part with efficiency AND with a sense of humor. 😀
He messed around on purpose, so that we could all see that he was NOT just singing (for instance) all six of the soprano parts at the top left) by just singing it once. and then adding in the photos. If you watch very carefully, you can see that each "lady" in that rank sings a bit differently (and you can HEAR the differences (very slight nuances) if you're watching very closely),. The same goes for every box of six singers.

This song (depending on how advanced the choir is) can be sung in either four parts (SATB -- Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass) or eight parts (SSAATTBB - First & Second Soprano, First & Second Alto, First & Second Tenor, Baritone, and Bass). When THAT arrangement is used, you will NOT hear every soprano singing exactly the same thing at any given time, or every alto singing exactly the same thing at any given time, etc. Each single part (of three singers, in that case, if that arrangement had been used) would be singing a slightly different, slightly overlapping part. Dan's Description tells us that he did this in SATB, meaning that every group of six is singing its own part, which is overlapping ONLY with the other three groups of six (not within its own group). I've listened closely, over and over again, and have seen that even though each of the six singers in the four corner boxes don't LOOK the same at all times, that's only because Dan wanted us to be able to actually see that he did, truly, sing each PERSON'S part separately, and slightly differently.

Personally, I really can't imagine deciding on the best performance for each of the six singers for each of the four parts, then putting all 24 of the chosen performances together and mixing them, much less mastering the whole piece, which he apparently also did by himself as well, or he would have noted that someone else helped with the mastering.
He also split part of this out to make a reel for Instagram, and he introduced that reel by saying that this was his "...moment of insanity!"

Your experience in choirs must give you a deep appreciation for the complexity of what Dan achieved here. The process of selecting and mixing those tracks to create such a polished final product is no small feat, especially considering he did it all on his own.
