The first time I saw Dan's cover & tribute to Andre Matos, I actually didn't know who he was, but noticed the painful sadness in Dan's eyes and face immediately. It was a wonderful tribute, for sure.

Your entire reaction, everything you said, along with Dan Vasc's extraordinary performance of the song, has become a special tribute to André Matos. From you, we learn firsthand how deeply the whole scene was affected. The heavy metal scene in Brazil took years to somewhat recover. The song "Into The Storm" by Angra with Fabio Lione as lead singer from last year is an attempt to cope with the tragedy. Currently, I think Ricardo Confessori and Luis Mariutti are on a really good path.

I love this song, but I can't watch Dan sing it without crying along with him. As when I watch him sing "American Trilogy" in honor of his dad, I always sit here, and say, "Dan...it's OK to cry...I'm crying with you. It will be OK." It's my mama and grandma heart. I can't help it. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one, either.
Interestingly, a few days ago, my 13-year-old grandson (4th down, in the troop of the eight kids parented by Judi & Harry, here in our household) came in from outside, in tears. He had been having a bit of a hard day. Everything Michael does, is pretty intense. He's just always been that way. He's an honest-to-God "pro gamer," for one thing, and LOVES to watch Davi Vasc's videos. He's also a very staunch, strong believer in God, and he sees visions and dreams dreams, which are always beautifully accurate.
So when he came in, part of what had gotten to him (on the hottest day of the year yet, which didn't help matters), was that all the other kids had already grabbed up their turns at the particular computers he had wanted to use. Mom and Dad weren't here at the time, so after deciding it was too hot to go outside, he came traipsing back here to me, frustrated and doing his best not to cry (not very successfully).
These kids all know that in those kinds of situations, I'm going to sit down, listen to them, and then tell them a story or two, about a similar situation from when I was a kid of their age. So he got to hear two of those, and we laughed and cried together for a while. Then, suddenly, I thought about Dan's two episodes of "Captain Bible," so I asked him if he and his mom had watched them yet, and they hadn't.
Excellent! We jumped into the first episode, and it was PERFECT for Michael's situation. That kid KNOWS his scriptures, and understands them, and stands by them. As Dan began to progress, and Michael saw how the game worked, he started doing the same thing I had done when I had watched that part (not live, but better late, than never). He started calling out the scriptures that were needed, in order to defeat the cyber lies. In so doing, some of his own issues got solved! We only got about 3/4 of the way through that one...to the point where Dan first started speaking in his Andre Matos falsetto, to represent that deceived lady's questions. Then his mom came home, and we talked a bit more, and then he went happily off to get his turn on one of the computers for a while. HOWEVER...he made me promise that we would watch from the point where we left off, and then he wants to watch Part 2, as well. That was on Saturday, and now it's late night on Monday, and we haven't had the opportunity to finish Part 1 yet, but we WILL.
It's times like this, when I watch Dan singing "Carry On," (and the other tributes and songs of encouragement that he's done, like "Heart of Steel," and "Numb," that I cry WITH him...just like I cried WITH Michael on Saturday. Somehow, some way, Dan Vasc has tied himself into my heart, because of who he is, from the inside-out.
I was just sitting here thinking that when Dan himself goes on (not for a VERY long time, yet, I dearly hope), that there will be people who will play his own tribute songs...FOR HIM!
