  • Albany has a rich history dating back more than 400 years. When Henry Hudson arrived in 1609, the area was already home to the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) and the Dutch had established a trading post. In 1797, Albany became the official capital of New York State. Since then, Albany has been a center for banking, railroads, and international trade. Four New York state governors went on to become President of the United States.

I escaped from Albany the first time in 1968, then again in 1975 and have only returned for funerals of family who could not escape. I see nothing much has changed. A few new buildings here and there but not much else. I bought my first 6 pack of Schaefer at 13 at what is now the Allen Street Pub and had my first legal Beer at 21 there as well the Bartender thought I was in my late 20's when I told I just turned 21.. He looked at me for quite awhile remembering all the illegal beer he sold me...Lots of memories.. Thanks for doing this. I'm in my 70's now. On my last visit I looked up some friends and they were still doing what they were doing in the 70's just older which was sad to see. Escaping was the best thing that ever happened to our family. You could not be a success in Albany unless you knew someone who was connected politically or financially to the City or the State. I fully retired at 52 and if I stayed I'd probably be still working. The Taxes on our old house on Homestead I hear are over $7,000. a year. I just paid mine here where I live and they were $238.68 on a full acre and a 1,448 sq.ft. house in the country.. Keep up the good work..

Thanks for sharing. I lived in Albany for 5 years in the early 2000s, I see not much has changed. I'm thinking of moving back to the area

Hey Richard! You are very welcome! And your right not much has changed social settings here, it's the same old same old, but before the pandemic things were growing well in a lot of ways. I wish you the best if you move back here! 🙏

This is interesting to me bc I am thinking of moving to Delmar from Seattle. I don’t know the area

Delmar is a nice area outside of Albany, I would think compared to Seattle it may be a little boring to you but then again not really because there is things to do around here and if you wanted to take the bus or train to the city its not that difficult of a trip. Also Boston is a few hours away as well
