  • HEY GIRL HEY!
    Welcome to part 2 OF 3 of how to take wash, condition, and style natural hair. This video will teach you how to get the most out our your conditioning step, which is crucial in locking in moisture in our hair.
    PROTECTIVE STYLES ANSWERS (From Elaine):
    Protective styles
    1. What would you say are best practices for protective styles?
    Best practices are to not keep extensions styles in for too long. 4 weeks is enough. Folks with fine strands need to be extra mindful of the types of styles chosen and weight if the extension hair. Tension is tension. Also keeping scalp clean by washing the hair while it’s in. Good washable styles are Knotless braids or Marley twists. I also love wigs (clueless and not sewn on) because you can take them off daily and still wash your hair weekly. Great for people so can’t cornrow because you can just twist your hair underneath.
    2. How do you keep your hair moisturized in a 2-week protective styles without using oils and butters?
    True Moisture comes from the shampoo and conditioning process so it’s not really possible but to aid in it feeling better to the touch a plant based mist like onyin Greg juice or Innersense sweet spirit will do.
    3. If protective styles are going to damage your hair no matter what, what are your recommendations for people that don’t like to manipulate their hair?
    Washing hair is like washing the body or brushing your teeth. It’s not about manipulation, it’s about health and necessity. The chosen style doesn’t matter as much. I’m a fan of the wash and fro which is simply rocking and Afro. The downside is there will be mid week cowashing necessary since that is a style with no holding products, just a leave in. Also, doing a wash and go like this requires so manipulation during the week.

    I enjoyed the tip about using a detangling brush that doesn't cause too much bounce back of the curls. That was something I had not heard before. I've been doing wash-n-go styling on my hair since 2008 so I rarely hear something that I'm not familiar with, but I love learning new things.💜

    I appreciated her mentioning climate being a factor in the outcome of a style. That’s rarely mentioned! I’m from the south and humidity has often dashed by dream style. LOL. But i have to remember, that It’s a lifestyle not a hairstyle! What a gem!

      Hi. I learned a lot. I usually detangle right after I apply the deep conditioner and let it sit after. However, I should do the opposite as she advised from the video
      . I also learned that I was using the wrong brush; I am going to order a Felicia Leatherwood brush. I stopped using oils and butters since last year, but my go to style is always a low bun with leave-in and gels. I think I have only done 2 wash n gos since then. Now I am waiting for the next video to learn and place my order to try using her method.
      Thank you very much Jenn

    Putting a cap on for about 10 minutes after using UFD so it can foam up is the tip I needed because my hair doesn’t always foam up. This is amazing. The other tip for me is that it’s ok to mix the deep conditioner with the rinse out conditioner. I absolutely love the Innersence conditioner. I am able to detangle my hair with ease. I do have several deep conditioners that I’ve had in my stash and I want to go ahead and use so now I know I can mix them so I can use my stash . Thanks again.

I detangle in 4 sections and start detangling while water is running through my hair. Waiting on the Felicia Leatherwood detangling brush to come back in stock because the one I have is flimsy. The kinky curly leave in is very good. I have been using the kinky curly Knot today and Curling Custard for the last 6 months and it helps with really good definition while keeping the hair supple. The thing I love about the plant based stylers is how the expand and suck up water. I find my hair had more movement when I use them too. Can't wait to see the styling. I just got my curly magic and innersense products so I'm looking forward to any application tips!

      Ou thank you for vouching for the Kinky Curly line. Ironically, I used them like 10 years ago when we had no clue what we were doing and my hair was SO STICKY. What a full circle moment. I can't wait to try them again as well with better knowledge!

      How would you describe the smell of the knot today? I saw it has lemongrass in it (which I don’t like the smell of), so I was wondering if it has an intense lemongrass scent, or if it’s not that noticiable?

    • @NAIKOchan17
      @NAIKOchan17 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tiahnarodriguez3809 it does have a scent to it, I've never found it to be overwhelming though and it doesn't linger in my hair either. The leave in really expands when you add water to it as well so that probably contributes to the scent not being as strong.

    • @NAIKOchan17
      @NAIKOchan17 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JennJackson It was sticky the first time I tried it too lol! Now I know it's because my application needed work. It gets sticky when too much of the custard is used. I guess that's why people say the leave in is the star. I find when I use enough of the leave in (and have enought water in the hair) I can use way less custard. I still get the longevity without the gummy or sticky feeling. I can always tell when my set is gonna kill it when my hair has weight and the products feel smooth over my hair (my hair also separates very easily while smoothing). I hope your next experience with the kinky curly yields better results with all you know now!

    An emulsion is made up of oils and water, so you can’t ever have a cream product without oil 👍🏽

    • @personmcdudeguy
      @personmcdudeguy ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. They are o/w emulsions, but that only means water and oil soluble materials. That could be esters, amino functional silicones, petrolatum, some preservatives, fatty alcohols, lots of things. Depending on a person's definition of oil, you could make a cream based product oil-free.

    Thanks, Jenn for the very informative video, I learned so much! Do you know why the topper gel needs to foam?

    • @JennJackson
      @JennJackson  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      She only applied the base gel (no topper yet - tune in tomorrow for that part 😉). But the base gel doesn’t “need” to foam but she let it sit for 10mns for better penetration to retain as much water as possible.

    Hi Jenn!! Really great video… I’m a little confused about though! If you can clarify if she used a deep conditioning first and then used a conditionner or she mixed both? I can’t wait for tomorrow 🎉

    • @JennJackson
      @JennJackson  ปีที่แล้ว +9

      This time, she mixed both to get maximum benefits. She used a protein deep conditioner (because I hadn’t washed my hair for a little over two weeks) and also added the hydrating conditioner to get the softening components. If you are consistent with your routine, you will not need a deep conditioner at all and just use your moisturizing conditioner on a regular basis. I hope this helps!

    • @lisafunchessrealtor
      @lisafunchessrealtor ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It looked like she mixed them to me. A little protein conditioner with a regular hydrating conditioner is a perfect combo and balanced.

      @@JennJackson thank you I tried to understand something. I think she says we don't have to deep condition every week. Our porosity can change if we do consistent washing. I watched the last video about how to shampoo our hair and today I skip my hot oil prepoo and shampoo twice and bizarrely my hair was so soft after I condition it. I learned something new. Now I don't have to coat my hair with oil before shampoo . No prepoo anymore .i do use my Shea butter for styling anyway

    UFD has coconut oil. Did Elaine apply Innersense on top of UFD on first front section? Also, it looks like Elaine used Innersense on second front section first--not UFD (16:07). Not complaining just learning. Thank you both for sharing!

    • @JennJackson
      @JennJackson  ปีที่แล้ว

      It does and most products already have oils, which is why it isn’t needed to add raw oils on top of the products that we are already using (oils are likely in your shampoo, conditioner, leave in, stylers etc). Also, she used UFD first all over my hair and then only use a bit of innersense on top.

    It seems as if the wash and go is being used as a tool to measure hair health. I don’t wear this style so how will I know if my hair is healthy? Also do you have DIY product recommendations? I don’t use commercial products because most contain inorganic chemicals

  • @madremaria.5513

    Appreciative of all the great info. Just a few areas around what moisturizing is I didn’t fully agree with as it’s only when water gets into your cuticle … that’s abit limiting to the definition of hair moisturizing. I believe it can apply to both the inner and the outer . Porosity area too it’s up for debate because in some cases porosity it genetic really. Otherwise, I love the series. Enjoyed most of her understanding of natural hair texture except for those few areas . I would be very interested on her take on Co-washing. Is there a thing as Co-washing?
