    What a beautiful scene. Too bad the clip is cut short. The bit that is truly gut-wrenching (bouleversant, as the French would say) to me is when he calms down, gets back in the car, and asks, while shaking, "Was that your boyfriend?". So simple, yet fantastically moving. It strikes on the nose what it feels like to be an insecure and insular male, being in love and secretly longing to be set free by a beautiful, happy woman. The lesson from the film is unforgiving but true: there is always room for kindness, generosity, and cooperation to improve relationships, but with Love, pain and grief can only be faced alone.

      Wow! This comment! This comment is SO true!
      It made me feel sad when Eddie Marsan asked Sally Hawkins "Was that your boyfriend?" And seeing the tears in his eyes at the same time and his face going red as well. I've had this feeling in my life.
      I feel a connection to this film and your comment! You've absolutely hit the nail on the head!
      I think the 2 of them could have made a relationship work if Eddie Marsan calmed down and gave advice to Sally Hawkins in a more calm way and told her that he says these things to her because he really cares about her life and well-being.

    When he says "You lied to me" is such a painful moment because he loses any hope that Poppy wanted him. I think we've all been there at some point in our lives. Brilliant scene in a brilliant movie.

    • @Onmysheet
      @Onmysheet 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What makes this scene even more fustrating is Poppy's slight indifference and unhelpfullness. She does not once in the film give people advice, she sometimes just observes and understands without saying a word.

    • @ampmri2434
      @ampmri2434 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@Onmysheet Poppy isn't obligated to give him advice. Scott assumed she liked him because she smiles and was just a genuinely happy person which had nothing to do with him. She always had that disposition. Perhaps it was her way of dealing with problems or avoiding confrontation. He obviously needs therapy for trauma from his past.

    The clip is cut short. At the end he says, 'I am a very good driving instructor.' And there it is. Everything he feels he is, as he knows that society does not take him seriously, so he takes extreme pride in this otherwise perfunctory job because that is all he has.

      I think she seems annoying or childish at the beginning, but over the course of the movie, you can see that she's wise, confident and empathetic. It takes a lot of self-reflection and strength to get that way.

      @@TheNationalfilmbored It makes sense for her to visit her inner child regularly as she is a teacher for Primary children so hence is in touch with that side of her personality, but maybe it came out more with Scott as she could sense that he had inner demons/trauma, hence in her way, tried to be his therapist, i.e. bring him out of his shell or get him to open up to her.

    This film is really interesting, but there's a Rover 400 at 1:33 in this video wearing a 54 plate!
    The Rover 45 was made at 54 reg, while the 400 ended at V registration in late 1999. So why is this in the film then?
    I looked that numberplate up on the MOT checker government website and it actually belongs to a white VW, go figure!
