I somehow thought this scene was more improvised than actually scripted because the actors performed so organic. Amazing how it is all in the script, word for word.
Facts. So it must really be a testament to Noah Baumbach as a writer that he was able to pen something so organic and heartfelt that it hardly needed any improvisation because it really just rolled off the tongue once the actors got into the headspace of the scene... Fantastic work.
Yes, I keep hearing the director really wanted them to stick to script bc he hears it perfectly in his head and that's how he wants it on film... Hats off to him, and the actors.
Scarlett said in an actors on actors interview with Chris Evans that Noah Baumbach never allowed his actors to deviate/improvise from the script, that it had to be word for word
The fact that so many children of happy marriages think this is an over exaggerated performance while children of divorce are just sipping their drinks going "Yeah that sounds 'bout right" should be a lot more upsetting than it is. And this is coming from a child of divorce
I mean, my abusive parents were like this without divorcing, I remember wishing they did, so that I had to endure living with just one at a time. Abusing families are just like this and worse. It'd be amazing to be on the "wow this is exaggerated" side tbh
If only "V.O." meant voice over. Imagine having some rando stumble into narration unaptly, "Hey! Try the chair by that window..." followed by "Yeeeaaaah that looks wicked. Nice nice nice. Symbolis--err something, hell yeah! Thanks a ton writer guy!"
I cannot imagine bringing myself to hysteria and memorizing all my lines and staying in character. Sometimes I think I could act. And then i see shit like this.
Or being able to start crying in the middle of the line exactly when it says to. Not just once for one take either. Over and over and over. That was truly amazing to witness
The best part of this scene is how you realise that you can’t take a side because both Nicole and Charlie are such flawed people, leading to that conclusion where it seems that they can find some way to live again, no longer partners.
@@waxsaw5352 I think everyone understands they're both bad people, but the way Nicole fucked Charlie over with the lawyers despite them agreeing on how to handle it makes her the worse person to me
Scarlett actually said that the director wanted every line said exactly like it was written. They could not make any changes. That seems like the most challenging part of this.
@@kittylouvex I'd say that the changes were deliberate ones done in a later version or on the day. Because they did something like 50 takes of the scene. They would have had takes with those lines. Also, on a set you have someone watching every single line. Because every single change in a line, or movement or different delivery can ruin the continuity and pace. There's no way they accidentally left out parts of the script.
Lmao I feel you (I'm an adult know, but was a child of a very gruesome divorce). Scene gets "better" if you know, that child goes to conflicting and guilty feelings like wishing certain someone just died and ended the constant distress and repetitive fights. On a brighter side, we will probably not end up like this, because, without causing it, in a way we've already been through this, and won't act as conflicted and not knowing what to do.
Nothing like pausing halfway downstairs and then silently going back to your room, half-concentrating on a flash game you're playing or reading the same sentence of a book over and over again because you're listening to your family fight in the next room. It's not like this anymore, but I still remember now it felt as a kid.
@@sakotsuku as a man, I can tell youb it is, but a man gets labeled as insecure if he were to be that keen on the connection his womn is making with a man. As someone who’s been through divorce and all it’s accompanying battles, this scene was a real gut punch. So real and visceral, you really have to give it to both Adam and Scarlett, they were incredible in this film and really brought Baumbach’s work to life and then some.
@@gagefulmer6375 Honestly. It’s really heartbreaking hearing parents talk about how their marriage was already on the outs before having a kid, but they stuck with it thinking having said kid would fix all their problems, but in actuality all it did was cause them more grief.
@@aizuaizu5073 So I think what it means is that Scarlett Johanson's character wanted to get married but by getting a divorce she's loosing. So it doesn't matter if the odds are in her favour during the divorce process (so she's "winning") because by divorcing in the first place, she already lost. That's what I understood and sorry if I didn't explain myself properly, English isn't my first language 😅
@Madi Hermosa When I first watched it I inmediatly thought that when she says, that she reffers that she wanted to get marry when he didn't. She already lost because their relationship wasn't as good as she thinks, and she delivered herself to someone that didn't love her as much as she did.
Aaa I see thank you guys now I understand about that... Now I really afraid for getting married or falling in love when I grow up... My parents always fight each other too... Thank you guys for your explanation
That last line was so brutal, can't stop crying every time I see it, I think it represents all the negative emotions that were grounded in his heart during the divorce process, damn this is such a powerful movie
Rahul Mondal-tbf I noticed in Star Wars The Force Awakens that I was finding his character more interesting than anyone else, more than the heroes. More or less the same for The Last Jedi...until they made him into ‘angry screaming man’ by the end. The guy has got ability, sign of a very observant person and knows how to express emotion without doing the text book approach. Scarlett does really well too, but I feel like this scene was Adams
I think it's also meant to communicate the intensity of his emotions. Just a second ago it seemed like he hadn't loved her, but afterwards it's this outburst and you know, he did. He did, he's just at the end of the line.
domino2515 thing is too is the dialogue, it’d be considered ‘bad writing’ by some people...but those people have never had an argument like this before. whether it be a teenager to a parent, a partner to a partner, it’s all the same. That kind of row where you both get lost in your anger for each other that you almost stop making sense. Where there isn’t a well constructed argument but just a bucket of feelings and emotions come pouring out and when it’s over you just feel distraught or confused. Just bottled up emotions that come from past neglect, ego, selfishness or pain and it all bubbles to the surface. This just felt so real. As a dude, I know what Adams character is trying to say, and at its core it’s like deflection. He fucked someone else so he’s attempting to dampen the significance of it by saying that laughing with her was more important xD it’s almost laughable to an extent but it’s so real too. That’s what real arguments are like and I’m shocked it was portrayed so well. Script, acting, everything. Great scene. Although I did enjoy that joker film, I feel like this movie should have been up there for an award imo. It really hits close to home for anyone who has experienced this kind of thing. @@JasminTheDreamer I've seen European films, I'm from there and I can agree and disagree with you on this. Yes European films are a lot less sensationalized than American movies. This movie was just like that. But the sheer amount of playwriting and focus on just two people and the amount of monologues they had was just something I had NEVER seen.
This was so authentic. So raw. It's a brilliantly written scene and two stellar performances. You can empathize with both, you can be sick of both - this is what's so perfect about it. There is no wrong or right, just two people who are expressing themselves - a beautifully objective look at how a relationship/marriage ends. It leaves everyone feeling hollow - there's no triumph or vindication, only heartbreak and regret
The exchange in this fight that *guts* me the most is when she tells him “you never loved me as much as I loved you” and he’s still responding to a completely different comment, and he doesnt. even. acknowledge. what she just said. When she sees him fail to respond or correct her I felt my eyes fill with tears along with her.
There wasn't really anything he could say to that though. What do you say? "No?" Soometimes it's just easier to go back to a different point in an argument. Not good communication, but that goes out of the window in a heated argument.
@@Tharrel you really thought that your comment was smart ? To say something like this in a heated argument. It take a lot of guts, so no change the subject wont help. These performances are examples of how great these actors really are. Remember when people thought you couldn't be a real actor and still do those lame ass type of roles?
2:00 The way Adam is just raging and then his voice just cracks like that and then starts crying in that same scene like bro that is beyond good acting.
You’ll never understand this scene until you’re at a genuine point when your life when the world isn’t all in front of you anymore, when you feel trapped, full of regrets, and no longer have the optimism of youth. I never used to understand adults acting like this while I minded my business playing neopets. Now I’m do. You can never ever get your youth back.
I'm glad to have experienced it young. It still horrified me how much I reminded myself of what I'd seen. So much I promised myself I wouldn't do, only to go to wayside when trust is broken 1 too many times
This scene moves the audience, because it deeply resonates with anyone who’s ever had an argument where they said something that hurt the other person. Good god, it’s gut-wrenching. The both did so phenomenally.
No kidding. That's the worst part to me. Once it's out there you can never take it back. And no matter how much the other person says they forgive you, they'll never forget it.
This is the most emotional scene of this film. Just like in most arguments...there's no way out bcs both of them already had some principle. They're not solving problems..they're just venting. And having problem that hasn't solved is indeed exhausting...mentally and physically. :"(((
@@thatsalt1560 yeah, maybe they are fighting out of nothing. But have you ever live in an abusive household? Did your parents divorce? Have you ever been on a toxic romantic relationship? If you ansered no to the three questions, then you would never understand why people say that this is so realistic.
i watched this movie with my parents. And my parents were silently sobbing for the entire movie. They had gone through a very dark phase in their marriage. The issue was quite similar. A young career couple decided to marry early because they loved each other too much which then started to fade away and so was their career. Luckily they didn't choose to divorce. They reconciled, acknowledged the individual problems each of them had, and went on with it together.
The fact that Adam turns on the tears right when the script asks for it. Actor of this generation. EDIT: The fact that people are actually trying to talk to me like this acting performance is easy to do, is why I ignore most people.
@Brick Films A little man called Martin Scorsese described him as one of the best actors of his generation so you know, even if you don't agree, there's some merit to that statement. And last I checked, crying is part of acting.
Brick Films Lol, you don’t even know his opinion on marvel movies either. He said multiple times he doesn’t hate them or thinks they’re bad, all he said is that he doesn’t believe it’s cinema and their like amusement rides. Scorsese could give less of a shot if marvel is successful, he’s perfectly fine with his art.
Academy should have a "Best Scene" Award for those movies who maybe dont gonna win for best picture or director but have a Scene like this a scene so so so good that that scene needs to be Immortalized by a academy award
The last part hit me the hardest - “I’m sorry.” “Me too.” Even after every ugly thing they said to each other, apologizing was as easy as letting go of those angry words. I took it as the reality of love - you can easily hate the person you love the most, yet easily love the person again even after hating him/her so much.
Steph Go Hate in fact is love. You don’t hate those you don’t love, you hmjust dont care and become indifferent to them. They cared a lot and they loved a lot which is why the hate comes. Hate isn’t but love’s pain.
*@Nerdy Snailie* That is definitely not true. You can definitely hate someone you don’t love by not having any kind of attachment for them and just having nothing but bad thoughts about them. If someone killed your parents, you wouldn’t just be “indifferent” about them. No. You’d hate them. Hate comes in different forms.
the only thing that isn't realistic is the woman would probably blame him more about how anwful her life has been because of him she would try to tell herself that she was a complete victim, and they would also both talk over each other
Amazing. Timeless. The wayshe portrays her character, astonishing. Even after wishing death upon her, she shows her husband compassion. They play their roles soo well
Man, it was the fact that the silences made it so much more realistic, just not knowing what to say, or not being able to comprehend what someone said to you.

"Are you kidding? I wanted to be married. I already lost." Somehow that line went over my head so many times. But man it sums up her character arc so well. Because I think most of us felt for Adam Driver in this movie. He's got this energy that draws you to him. She won the divorce but lost the marriage. Damn.
She decided to reduce him to it when she went to her lawyer. So what she just had to do was play de victim role, and proyect on Charlie her selfishness
i definitely felt for nicole more. in this scene, he made mostly personal attacks towards her as a person whereas she addressed the problems she had with the relationship, including the uneven power dynamic. not to mention that she gave up her acting career to help him with the theater.
This is how my parents used to fight as well. But it always ended with my dad saying something so hurtful to my mom and then storming out and never apologizing.
The fact that people are so divided on who was right or wrong in the movie just proves how good this movie is. Edit: I understand neither of them were right or wrong, I just wanted to highlight the fact that people are disagreeing about certain things in the movie, which proves how well they made this movie.
I can't see anyone taking sides in top comments. People just quote what hit home for them, but we cab acknowledge the complexity of the situation and that while person is understandable, it doesn't mean they are right.
In the end, we find out they were both in the wrong either way. Many divorces are not always caused by one person in the relationship, it’s usually by both.

In the first few minutes of the film, Nicole said that she loves Charlie for being someone she can share her problems with, how he always comforts her. Then there's a scene wherein Nicole is complaining about something and Charlie is sitting just listening to her. Then you have this shot in 0:30 wherein she looks defeated when he stands up, because of the realization that one person she share her problems with is the one that caused her pain, this time. I wish Joaquin and Adam weren't nominated for the Oscar in the same year. Honestly it’s sad but so touching to see that the settle on a common ground at the end the fact that they both acknowledged and said they were sorry and sought out eachother ugh so heart breaking
This is one of the greatest performances of a relationship I've ever seen. There are impossible moments like this. But somehow, it's still worth it. When she consoles him even though he gutted her. That showed me what it was to be human. We are fuck ups. We are messy, awful, spiteful little creatures. But we love. The selflessness, putting someone's needs above our own in a tragic moment of despair... it's beauty in tragedy. I've seen and been through a lot of hell in my short life. I've lost both parents. I've had abusive relationships. I've worked myself ragged and still had to come up with compassion and care I didn't have to give. This struck a chord for me.
Honestly, is not often that we see scenes of men REALLY crying and basically being real human beings with feelings and all. This scene not only does that but does it so well its 100% believable. I always forget this is a movie when I'm watching it. It's like I'm just watching somebody else's life
You didn't get what it mean? Director's note to maybe move to the chair in the end for last take, but organically she ended up standing in the middle of the room with him at her knees (sorry for my English) in the final take
Imagine you perform all these feelings, emotionally and physically then the director says '' ok guys a few more takes". And then all over again. This job is hard af. I appreciate and respect acting so much.
The amount of emotional stress actors go through to make a character believable enough that we can feel for and relate to is one of the most difficult things to do. Yet, Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson did it almost effortlessly imo. This film forever made me a fan of Noah Baumbach as well.
This, this scene broke my heart into pieces. My parents never talked like that, even when they had to. But they spoke to me this way while they were divorcing. I cried, a lot
I wanted him to get mad, yell and scream the entire time. When he finally broke it was so intense and emotional. I cried as everything finally came out, the words were said., yelling and screaming. I would not want Adam Driver mad at me. This was truly in my opinion Oscar worthy for him.
So we are all only cheering Adam? Not Scarlet?? who was as much a part of the emotional turmoil and struggle in this argument. They BOTH were great screen partners in the movie.
SJ is great too throughout the entire movie, but this is Adam's scene. The movie up to this point is Charlie taking beating after beating whereas Nicole's life has been slowly improving since their separation. This entire argument is him letting out his pent-up frustration by (unjustly) blaming Nicole for his problems both in their marriage and in their divorce. There is an emotional payoff here that the whole film has been building towards, and it reaches its crux when Charlie tells Nicole that he wishes she was dead. Every bit of Adam's performance here portrays a stunning amount of depth and the argument gives him the room to finally let loose his frustrations on the woman he loved. Even without Adam, this is an incredibly-written scene and his final breakdown is what really pushes it to be one of the best of 2019.
I think that adam's role is way more showy in the movie, he has the crying and yelling where she doesn't so he's gotten a lot more attention. however, i think scarlett is just as good in these scenes but it's way more subtle. it doesn't feel like either of them are acting, just that you're watching people
Due to my past, I literally forgot this was all acting and I was put in my 6 year old mindset again, silently watching like it was my own parents arguing.
Same. The first time I watched this I went into shock and felt like I was on autopilot the whole day, unfeeling and numb. A few days later I had an emotional breakdown, probably majorly due to this lmao
I know how it feels to tell someone you love you wish they were dead. It's a disgusting feeling and I had to go to therapy for it. Sometimes we say things we regret, but we say it in that moment 'cause the pain inside is too excruciating to bear you want the other person to feel a hundred times worse than you. In the end, you try to let it go and make peace with the situation. It'll get better. These two actors were phenomenal but Adam's gut-wrenching line brought me to tears and made me relive my own personal regret. Much love to Noah and his actors, and to anyone reading this make sure to love yourself first before attempting to find love again, and when you do, remember to learn from your past relationships
I was so engaged in this scene that when the script ended with "try the chair by the window" i was trying so hard to anticipate what they would do with it.
L 64 uh no u literally get a few months maybe weeks days even sometime instant to practice and study a script or monologue I’ve taken acting classes it’s not easy giving directors what they want
They don’t memorize the whole script at a time. They repeat and practice scenes over and over, especially big scenes. You imagine yourself in the scenario rather than hard memorize and it comes organically.

The fact that she refused to share the letter she wrote about him from the first part of this movie, just because she said she hated what she wrote. @@kittylouvex I'd say that the changes were deliberate ones done in a later version or on the day. Because they did something like 50 takes of the scene. They would have had takes with those lines.
"Are you kidding me? I wanted to be married. I'd already lost."
deep right??
I don't get it... Can you explain me???
Acting must be ONE OF the hardest forms of entertainment, I swear.
They were perfect.
That last line was so brutal, can't stop crying every time I see it, I think it represents all the negative emotions that were grounded in his heart during the divorce process, damn this is such a powerful movie
And you see Nicole aint even flinching, she knows he did not meant to say those words.

This was so authentic. So raw. It's a brilliantly written scene and two stellar performances. You can empathize with both, you can be sick of both - this is what's so perfect about it. All the writers who wrote this put all their pain in their relationships to make this iconic scene. The term "you can't make this stuff up" is so real.
The hate looked so real, it reminded me of my parents. 10/10 amazing!

Well holy shit
Nicole: do you love her!?
“NoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOo”
... bUt sHE dIDn'T haTE mE!"
Honestly it’s sad but so touching to see that the settle on a common ground at the end the fact that they both acknowledged and said they were sorry and sought out eachother ugh so heart breaking
SIKE nah the thing that kills me through this whole movie is they’re still obviously madly in love they’re just so jaded and miserable
It's like I'm just watching somebody else's life
Yeah! Because men don't have real feelings!
@@lean4470 it must be scary for men to have fake feelings that they perceive as 100% real feelings and feel just like real feelings. 😣
@@veriveryluvr I was being sarcastic tho
@@lean4470 me too lol
As a man who cries a lot I agree! I almost wrote *too much* which I guess is part of the problem.
Great actors and it's all in the script. Great script.
Mia well he was pretty damn good in this scene, just saying.
*TRY THE CHAIR BY THE WINDOW*
I was wondering what that was
You didn't get what it mean? Director's note to maybe move to the chair in the end for last take, but organically she ended up standing in the middle of the room with him at her knees (sorry for my English) in the final take
when i read that, i thought she was going to tell him to off himself using the chair. Oh lord.
Him crying at the end of his argument is real af. I felt that.
This, this scene broke my heart into pieces. My parents never talked like that, even when they had to. But they spoke to me this way while they were divorcing. I cried, a lot
That’s so fucked up. I’m sorry you had to go through that.
They BOTH were great screen partners in the movie.
forachange ikr she was amazing
forachange I haven’t seen the whole movie but he was the only one who stuck out to me in this clip
Well she is nominated too for best actress!
I feel you. Isn’t ptsd just great
@@breakingad89 It sucks.
Same. The first time I watched this I went into shock and felt like I was on autopilot the whole day, unfeeling and numb. A few days later I had an emotional breakdown, probably majorly due to this lmao

@@myaava6608 Pretty much.
Bravo🙌🏼 one of the finest👌🏼 comments here yet.
“..To anyone reading this make sure to love yourself first before attempting to find love again.”
This one so powerfull
I was so engaged in this scene that when the script ended with "try the chair by the window" i was trying so hard to anticipate what they would do with it.
how do actors memorizes paragraphs of script jesus
Years of practice and repetition for weeks doesn't make it that hard
L 64 uh no u literally get a few months maybe weeks days even sometime instant to practice and study a script or monologue I’ve taken acting classes it’s not easy giving directors what they want
They don’t memorize the whole script at a time. They repeat and practice scenes over and over, especially big scenes. You imagine yourself in the scenario rather than hard memorize and it comes organically.

@@sakonan4883 as a woman, don't agree. she could have had a proper conversation about wanting to live in NY because she lost her individuality as an actress. she could have done her own thing in NY and not be so immersed in her husband's theatre. she chose divorce instead of going to therapy, she chose not sleeping with her husband instead of trying to have a break first. she made mistakes too. and she put her husband, herself and her kid through a lot by the whole legal process when she'd agreed to divorce without lawyers in the first place.
ruya x I think so too
She clearly has emotional issues
What I’m saying though is that his attitude about the cheating isn’t right either
He’s in the wrong for this reason because he should have tried talking it out
Cheating is often a nail on the cross
@Sally Vee so why didn't she do it? why didn't she say she was going to move to LA for a job temporarily? She could have actually do it, and take their son with her and make a home there. people love to blame their inaction on other people and pretend they are sacrificing. if she didn't want to be sucked into his life that much, she could have managed not to be sucked into his life. but she let it be, then she was too bitter about it to resolve the matter logically.
@Sally Vee what? she said she would divorce him, she sent him the divorce papers, got a lawyer involved and literally cornered him into doing what she wants just so he could see his child. they had decided they would live in NY, she made a choice! he didn't force her. he was a good husband to her, why is it his fault that she lost her individuality? he was not selfish, he was just doing what he loved. and she claimed she loved supporting his dream, but she had forgotten about hers. it's not his fault.
Lack of music makes it too much realistic that I forgot they were acting.

This movie and those two, wow, just wow, well deserved nominations.
The fact that she refused to share the letter she wrote about him from the first part of this movie, just because she said she hated what she wrote. Turns out, it's the opposite of what's really in the letter. She's expressing and telling how she really feels about him, and what's he like, and why she fell in love with him. And how He found out and read the letter at the last part of the movie, is just heartwarming yet most heartbreaking part of this movie.
I'm 22 yrs old, and I love this movie. It's just real.
