Fuckin love this guy and his films. One of cinema's greatest sages. Naked just blew me away. I still go back to it every now and then. For all of its in-your-face visceral transgression, there's definitely something extremely subtle and artful and kind of magical about it.
Naked (1993) with David Thewlis is one of the best independent movie in the 90s. I remember I rented it from a video store at that time because there was rent one get one free special. Never regretted picking up that movie ever since. Seen it again on blue-ray, and it is still a fun ride to see it again.
2027 is the end of the world, i made a new calculation of the mayan calender and tried it out against whiteheadian metaphysics. i came to a clear conclusion that the world will end in 27. cheers
Mike Leigh--I love him. He's probably my favourite filmmaker. Great films, all the way back to Nuts in May. If I had a daughter, I think I'd name her Candice-Marie.
From America, I love them all. My order might go: Vera drake Secrets and lies All or nothing Happy go lucky Another year Topsy turvy Naked Maybe they're all tied.
It's cheesy and disingenuous for VICE to disown the interviewer and act like the corporation (VICE) is a person, in this case the nameless interviewer. Oh, look "Sheraton Hotels Talks Film With Mike Leigh."
I love Mike Leigh's films but I can't believe he said that about The War Zone! It was such a beautifully compassionate and real film. If you weren't sexually abused as a kid you shouldn't allude to knowing more about it than someone who actually was (Tim Roth).
I can't pick a favorite Leigh film. It used to be Nuts in May, then it was Grownups....then Abigail's Party....I'd be hard-pressed to pick one for my desert island. Not a bad interview. Thanks.
great filmmaker, must admit don't like all the films I've seen but vera drake, happy go lucky, and another year are brilliant pieces of gem. saw all or nothing, life is sweet which I didn't like too much, and sure do hope to see the films mentioned here. he is britian's equivalent to fellini, bergman, and great auteurs like almodovar, Scorsese, and Polanski though. check out his speech when he got some lifetime achievement award from the bafta's it was flipping brilliant!
+Martin Kline I loved "Happy Go Lucky" but be patient with it. I didn't initially feel the first 30-40 minutes of it.. but I ended up thinking it was brilliant
Maybe if you knew a little more about John Doran's background you'd have a better understanding of him. thequietus.com/articles/17461-john-doran-jolly-lad-strange-attractor-menk
The only film of his I've seen so far is Mr. Turner and aside from the gorgeous cinematography I didn't really like it all that much. Still, I bet he's got some great work in his catalog and maybe I'll give Mr. Turner another shot one day.
I've heard he doesn't like his own "Abigail's Party," 1977, anymore but it's an amazing film. One of Stanley Kubrick's favorites, and inspired Louis CK to make his new show, "Pete and Horace." The film really showcases his great writing for characters to slowly reveal themselves through dialogue and through their silences. I believe Leigh dislikes it because it feels a little derivative of Harold Pinter's mysterious writings and Who's Afraid of the Virginia Woolf? But honestly, those sources don't own the rights to viciously bickering married couples, and mysterious plot elements. Give it a try, the ending made my eyes widen in shock.
"Naked" is surely in the top 10 films of all time. it is a work of genius by all concerned.
YES

Naked is high on my list and one of the few films I can watch over and over. Great to hear his reflections and annecdotes.

Naked is my favourite film of all time.
Bloody hell I love Mike Leigh
This is really great. We need more of this from VICE.
Good work finding that street from the film and interspersing it with the interviewer walking
My top 3 favorite directors!
Johnny was mistaken, the end of the world is not 1999 it's 2020.

Mike Leigh has made a series of great films particularly HAPPY-GO-LUCKY and ALL OR NOTHING and even NUTS IN MAY, a precursor to SIGHTSEERS.
Mike Leigh zawsze na propsie!!!!
I really hope he keeps making movies
Naked is an incredible film, I've seen a couple of his other films but found them a bit twee.
I seen Bleak Moments a while ago, after feeling a bit disappointed, I really want to see it again.
Wow! He really dissed Tim Roth's film!! - 4:38
I know right I loved the war zone I've read the book too
Naked is the best British film ever created and one of the best of all time. People truly into film should watch it.
From America, I love them all. My order might go:
Vera drake
Secrets and lies
All or nothing
Happy go lucky
Another year
Topsy turvy
Naked
Maybe they're all tied.
thank you for making this. Mike Leigh rocks
One of the greats.

John Doran's name appears onscreen within the first 5 seconds so the interviewer is not at all nameless.
To me, watching his films is synonymous with living in the time I am in.
I love Mike Leigh's films but I can't believe he said that about The War Zone! It was such a beautifully compassionate and real film. If you weren't sexually abused as a kid you shouldn't allude to knowing more about it than someone who actually was (Tim Roth).

He looks like the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II, A.K.A: Rudolf the Mad.
You're right, he does!
Kiss of Death is my favourite Leigh film ,underrated .

Vera Drake
Secrets & Lies
The narrator sounds like he's half asleep.
I know, right? He sounds like he's so fucking bored. Give the guy some coffee or something.
Maybe if you knew a little more about John Doran's background you'd have a better understanding of him. thequietus.com/articles/17461-john-doran-jolly-lad-strange-attractor-menk
+brainflash1 He's seen Naked 50 times. I've seen twice and it gave me depression.
brainflash1 good questions though
He isn't wrong about the dead body statement
The only film of his I've seen so far is Mr. Turner and aside from the gorgeous cinematography I didn't really like it all that much. Still, I bet he's got some great work in his catalog and maybe I'll give Mr. Turner another shot one day.
That's easily his worst film. Watch Secrets & Lies, Naked, Vera Drake, or Topsy-Turvy next.

Mike Leigh is filmmaking God
Do the interviewers need to inject themselves into the questions so much?
+Retinend It's Vice. Don't expect a pack of self-important hipsters to resist the urge to interject or railroad the interviewee.
Shame left directors like Lee and Loach aren't coming through so much.
Absolute fucking genius. From America.
First liked him after nuts in may
