      I got a Win 1894 Apache, chambered for .30-30. I never used it (prefer my Marlin 336, also chambered in .30-30) but I couldn't pass up a gold plated legend. It's nice, even has the saddle ring. It's a piece of US history that was originally sold in Canada. If I still hunted and was going to do a lot of walking I might choose the Win 1894. It's definitely much lighter to carry than the Marlin.

    Just before I turned 18, my dad took me to the gunstore and said for my 18th birthday, I could pick out a gun to get, with a reasonable price range. I was originally going to get a Savage 11 Scout, but I saw under used guns a nice looking lever action for around $450. It was a Winchester 94, and they had two of them. I watched Hickok's video in the store since I wanted to know more about it, and decided to buy it. I went with the one that had a slightly smoother action and better sights. When I got the rifle, I checked the serial number, and found out it was a pre-64. That was an amazing deal, and my guess is the store employees didn't know that the gun was worth more than $450, and a few weeks later, I saw the other 94 up for $1000. So happy with my choice.

    One of the smoothest rifles in the game. Grew up shooting this beaut. It was then passed down to me along with its sister, a win .44. However, they were stolen along with 10 other beautiful family rifles... it was heart wrenching. Live and you learn, and now I'm slowly rebuilding the arsenal. Thank you for this video. Memories. Just in time for my dad's birthday 3/23 😌🙏 Life is good.

      That's the reason I have a safe. $1500 is nothing compared to losing 1 gun to a scumbag. Lost a model 12-16ga when my truck was broken into at a wayside rest stop . Was my Grandfather's.

    I still have my Winchester Ranger .30-30 I bought back in 1987! I got my 1st buck with it that year. It is pretty much identical to the model 94 only the barrel sticks out farther then the tube. The gun still looks brand new! That is a great shooting highly accurate brush gun! I highly recommend it!! Lots of fun to shoot at the range also!

    I am 73 years old, & have been into all sorts of guns since I was 10. I have watched what I assume has been all your videos over these past few years. While I very much enjoy ALL your entertaining & Informative videos, I will have to admit, I have observed many videos that are posted by less than stellar gun nuts. Many of those videos demonstrate sheer stupidity, & dangerous activities. There are also MANY gun "experts" on here who's credentials I would really question, just by the stupid opinions they expound, & lack of knowledge concerning the subjects of guns & safety !!. Your videos are by far, the most simply informative & entertaining of the lot. Keep up the good work, & I'll keep watching !! If they should be stupid enough to take down your videos, I will no longer support TH-cam, & will cancel my account !! God Bless, & take care ;Jim

    wonderful, thanks, my first deer was taken with a rifle just like that one when I was 16 years old. A deer stand in Burke County GA. Borrowed from a friend. Wasn't much of a challenge, in the stand before daybreak, a nice 4 pointer (back then everyone thought a young buck was more tender and tastier than a big buck). Walked right up for a 25 yard broadside shot. One shot and down. This video made this now old man feel all kinds of thoughts of the carefree life we all led in the 60's. Have a great week!

      I was under the impression that a young buck did have better meat than an older one based on the same reason that beef cattle were castrated: The older the animal, the more Hormones like Testosterone toughened the meat over time.

      NZ DOC HUNTS how are new Zealand gun laws?

    • @nzdochunts34
      @nzdochunts34 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      They are pretty relaxed for outside of the states. To buy a rifle or shotgun you must be 15yo or older. No age limit to shoot a rifle or shotgun if you are supervised by a license holder. Licenses are easy to get and its around $75ish USD. Where our laws are not so great is that you need a special licence to own automatics or a semi automatic with a capacity of greater than 7 rounds both rifles and shotguns.
      A capacity of 7 rounds and under is able to be held on a regular licence. Pistols also require a special endorsement and can only be used at specific pistol clubs.
      Rimfire rifles are allowed 15 round capacity. Bolt action or pump action rifles or shotguns have no capacity restrictions.
      Hunting wise though is where our country tops the US in that there are no seasons no limits no tags anyone can go hunt when ever they want.

    • @Cinnabun
      @Cinnabun 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      pretty comfy tbh.
      Probably comparable to Canada with extra restrictions on things like full-auto.
      can own full-auto but not fire them legally with a collectors license.
      MSSA (military style semi-autos) class-3 license, hard to get but doable if you want it.
      There's a few loopholes like getting a normal class-3 gun but removing "pistolgrip" to make it a class-2.

    • @nzdochunts34
      @nzdochunts34 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good advice and I agree but yes I am all about the nostalgia. When it comes to the 30-30. Agree 7mm08 is way better in every area. The 7mm08 is one the most popular cartridges over here in New Zealand with 308 and the 270 and 243 neck and neck.

    • @nzdochunts34
      @nzdochunts34 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Leverevolution is the way to go when it comes to the 30-30. I am a big fan of using Hornadys A-Max as a hunting projectile in reloads . It is quiet a popular round here in New Zealand. I ran the 155grain Hornady A-max in my 20inch Surpressed Tikka T3 at 2950fps deadly round. One of my videos is of it in action hunting some feral goats.

    Great video, Mr H., as always. Inspired by you, I had to seek out my own piece of history and scored a 94 , vintage 1952, last spring. Damn I love that gun. There are few things as sweet as a lever action Winchester throwing lead down range. Unless I'm doing that with my Remlin 1895G guide gun that I got myself for Christmas from Buds. That was a win-win because Buds couldn't have been better and the NIB Marlin puts the naysayers to shame, at least this one does. Fit and finish, cycling, sights dead on, no _unfinished-ness at all. A solid, accurate, well crafted Boomer. Proud to say I'm happy with a new Marlin. And an old one that I just picked up today with the WESTERN FIELD stamp on it, made in 1964. You have any from Montgomery Ward's kicking around? I'd like to know what you think of them. Thanks again and keep it up. Life is good.

    We have that same exact 1940 Winchester 30-30 94. Great gun. My dad has let me shoot it twice. I shot the same thing you did too. 2 liter coke bottle on the first shot. I missed the second bottle though because i was still sort of dazed from the first shot. I just kinda pointed and fired without aiming. I love that gun though.

    This is my favorite channel on TH-cam. I just saw an article that TH-cam is notifying channel owners that gun related content will start to be removed. Hickock are you affected by this? I’m going to cancel my subscription to TH-cam Red if so. Thanks - Kenny

      They are changing the guidelines. We'll have to see how it affects us.

      I think it would be everyone’s duty to cancel any type of service that does not support our amended rights. If we all start to stand up for our rights a little more it would be much tougher to deny them.

      Hola YoHabloInglés let’s try to be a little more positive.
      I’ve cancelled my TH-cam Red account. I agree with Keith we cannot allow people who don’t agree with the 2nd amendment to infringe on the 1st. Hickock you have 3 million subscribers that’s a large voice and I’m one that will stand by you!
      This is the only country that people are actively trying to give up their rights of freedom and suppress it from others having those rights. Every other country fights for the rights of freedom and we have a members of our society that doesn’t even want them.

      Kenny Graham
      This is how it starts, we need to make our voice heard and stand up for our rights. TH-cam isn’t the only company out there supporting taking away our rights either. In my opinion there is no neutral ground on the subject you either support our rights or you are supporting taking them from us. If a company is supporting taking our rights away it is our duty to no longer do business with them. Nothing effects a business more than its bottom line.

      Keith H you are correct Sir. United we must stand!
      Let’s see if they pull down all of the rap videos too since they also promote firearms. Oh and then there are all the video game reviews. Hmmm and then all the movies. Looks like Full30 will reap the rewards!!

    Love your channel Hickok. Had one just like that on my first deer hunt when I was sixteen. If your left eye dominant how do you shoot a rifle right handed? Maybe I heard you wrong though.

    I saw a Winchester model 94 30-30 in a local pawn shop a few days ago.The guy behind the counter said it was a 1970's rifle and it looked like it could have been but since I already own one in 44 magnum I bought a JM barrel Marlin model 36 30-30 instead but man it had a cool looking patina. I can't stop thinking about that rife. Did I mention that really love lever guns?

    I like your sidesaddle! Is that something you made or did you buy that? If you bought it what company made it?
