Hi There, my husband refuses to get a colonoscopy he says the guaiac stool sample test will detect any blood or abnormal cells. This frustrates me. TFS

He’s only partially right. What he’s missing is that the stool sample test cannot detect polyps and all colon cancer begins with a polyp. Many of them are often precancerous and it’s only during a colonoscopy that they will find, remove and send off to the lab. The stool sample tests totally miss this crucial element of colon cancer. Also, the stool sample can and will pick up cancerous cells. The problem with that test is he will already have cancer by the time that tests is positive. However with the colonoscopy because they test the polyps they remove, he catch the disease in a precancerous state, not a cancerous state if that makes sense. Once he has cancer he’ll possible need chemo, colon resectioning surgery etc.. so while he is technically correct, the colonoscopy is the better method to use for prevention.

Thanks for the quick response. Now I can tell him with a better understanding about Colonostomy vs stool sample test. This should make him think differently and go get it done. Thanks 😊
