Australia's second coronavirus wave: what went wrong in Victoria | Four Corners

  • For months, Australia was the envy of the world with COVID-19 infections largely under control. A breach in Melbourne’s hotel quarantine program changed that and left the nation anxiously watching the state tackle round two of Australia's coronavirus fight.
    We investigate what went so terribly, tragically wrong in Victoria.

      NASA astronaut John Glenn quote “As I hurtled through space, one thought kept crossing my mind - every part of this rocket was supplied by the lowest bidder.”
      I don't know if that was the case here but i was under the impression that as long as the companies agreed to standards some governments had to use the lowest bidder.

    God help those poor residents in aged care.
    I worked in private aged care for years.
    The management told us not to wear gloves when cleaning residents who were incontinent of urine.
    All to save money.

    By the way this company has 50 cases now.

      Soul Sphere aged care has been in crisis for years.
      I worked short staffed nearly every day, then when the accreditation body visited they would hire extra staff.
      Smoke and mirrors!
      Not to mention lying on paper work for more funding.
      Private aged care is about saving money to make more money.
      They don’t care about the residents and staff.
      If you complained about staff shortage the manager would tell you that your time management wasn’t up to scratch.
      By the way I found paper work for the management job description.
      Their end of year bonus was budget based.
      The more money they saved for the company, the bigger the bonus.

    The Vic gov’t should have used military and medical personnel for quarantine.
    Trusting people to self-isolate was never going to work.
    The quarantine should have been universal. Why did some people get permission to quarantine at home?
    I’m never staying at that filthy Ridges hotel, and none of the retuned travellers should have been expected to stay in unhygienic conditions.
    I hope all the baby shower personnel got the sack.
    The CEO of Epping Gardens is a nurse? Then he should have had a good grasp on infection control. Hire more nurses, and less PCAs.
    He was right to send the COVID cases to hospital. Why were they refused admission?
    My heart breaks for the families who lost loved ones to this virus, and who were not able to be by their loved ones’ sides.
    SARS has been around for a long time. There should have been a non-partisan, federal and state working group to address how to control an epidemic long ago.
    Thank you Four Corners.

    The aged care experience in Victoria is not uncommon, its been a major issue for most countries with extensive aged care services and also the highest rates of deaths and infections. Clearly government and aged care organisations need a thorough review of the system in place to protect the aged and vulnerable. Kudos to the ABC for this reporting. There was a time I never thought this would ever make the news. Clearly many have been out of their depth and we can’t criticise. This has been the first pandemic Australia has had to deal with for a very long time. Negligence and under qualified departments shows how vulnerable our system is.

      @kemurinine4272 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Thomas Johnson I'm relieved you know that, all the people not treating this virus as 'just the flu' is concerning. And yes it will do damage but we've never been in a better postion to defeat a virus as now. I'm obviously optomistic about this lol but literally all of humanity is coming for Covid's ass in a way that has never happened before.
      It won't be eliminated but we will be able to manage it, a mixture of vaccines, better tracking and testing, social distancing masks will create a somewhat normal way of life with maybe only occasional lockdowns in targeted areas every now and then. It won't be normal life but it we will be alot better than what alot of people are experiencing now (2 month long house imprisoment etc)

    • @kemurinine4272
      @kemurinine4272 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Thomas Johnson I think you missed my point, even if it somehow fuses with something like ebola, it would become less infectious as sick people or dead people won't be able to spread it. Bassically Virus's with lower mortality rates will kill more people as they can spread more easily. if it became as deadly as ebola that could actually, (key word could) help lower numbers

    This falls into the "first world problem" bucket.....it's a very minor second wave compared to the COVID situation in so many developing or less wealthy countries. Even compared to similar countries like UK, USA, we can see Australia has been barely touched by this epidemic. UK has 42,000 deaths in a population just 2.5 times Australia's. Sweden has 5,000+ deaths with a population just half that in Australia. Australia has no perspective and no real problems so very minor things are hugely exaggerated for TV ratings. Shame.

      @Antphoneigh 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    We have all suffered, We have all had loses, Dear ones to us are gone without even being able to say goodbye to them.
    Some of us have lost our jobs and we don't know what we are going to do after the Pandemic is over to be able to support our families or to pay our debts, we will all need to re invent ourselves to survive what will be the next step after Covid19.
    From deep inside my heart I can only say: "It is time now to stop pointing fingers & blaming each other. If anyone need to be blamed for all that happened, We are all to be blamed because the truth is, No One was prepared for all of this. Period."
    We need to learn now how to trust each other again and to look forward to a brighter future, in memory of those we've lost.
    We are all aching but we need to come together again, and it will take time for all wounds to be healed, but they will heal.

    I live in a town of 1800 people. If any cases get in here we are stuffed. We only have an IGA supermarket and the whole town treats it like a town hall, a meeting place. they block the entrances and aisles while catching up on all the latest News. The #1 topic (ironically) is COVID 19. Seriously, we will be hit hard if we get even a small cluster. This Pandemic has highlighted the apathy, selfishness & Ignorance of the greater community (at least in my town) IMO. However, these same people will point the finger at others for breaking various laws, etc. But for some reason can not see they are potentially killing by proxy. Sadly, the people in my town wouldn't even know what that meant.

    Our infectious control attitude is years behind the Asian countries. Singapore, Japan, South Korea, HK, and China all controlled their cases effectively, because they took it seriously. Both authorities and people learnt proper management methods and incorporated these measures into their daily life no matter how inconvenient those were. They just had the right attitude to get shit done.
    From what I've personally seen daily, I'm not surprised Aus had another outbreak. Fingers crossed it will be contained soon and Australians have learnt the lesson (although I doubt the latter very much).

What I don't understand is that unlike Italy and many other countries that were hit early we had months to plan ahead and we appeared to be in a good position. What was the government doing? They had months to plan ahead and wouldn't you think that the hotel quarantine program is the one thing that you would absolutely want to get right? I would think that a once in a century pandemic would deserve a little more attention to detail. I know that the blame game won't really achieve much, but this is absolutely harrowing. I'm ashamed to be a Victorian. I also feel deep, deep compassion for the hundreds of families who have lost loved ones. Finally, what I can't believe is how long it took the government to go into stage 4.

But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through...all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear. Only 8% are below 65 years old and even then it’s questionable (the UK retracted 5000 of it’s deaths in the last week). The mortality rate is 0.025% (about the same as the flu) and in Victoria more people have committed suicide than have died of this virus. What has happened in Victoria is exactly what Cuomo did in NY. They both sent the elderly back to their retirement homes and this infected the rest of the home. It’s mismanagement and it comes back to Dan Andrews.

I've seen guards at the local Coles, they move around, they are constantly walking that front area, they are saying hello to all the people who enter the store. Sometimes I've seen them handing out baskets.
    They are doing this because their job is absolutely boring. I know a guy who was given a job of sitting in his car next to a station that was having construction work. You are god damned right the dude was having a nap here and there. Security jobs like this are like being on a 12 hour night flight and being unable to sleep. You have your phone, but if you use it for 12 hours, you won't have any charge left. It's shitty.

      Having a shit job that you hate is no excuse to do your job badly. My job sucks and is boring as hell, mostly packing envelopes with pamphlets and sticking a sticker with the persons name and address on it. I have never once decided "this is boring, I am gonna have a nap on the floor" and if I DID do that, I would fully expect to be fired. Also I would be angry if my co-worker slept on the floor and wasn't punished for it took.
      Seriously, if you can't handle doing nothing for like 8+ hours then don't get into security work. You don't have what it takes to be a security guard if you are gonna sleep on the job, or play with your phone the entire time to make it tolerable. I find it amazing that there is anybody who seems to think that they actually deserve to be paid $29 an hour to SLEEP and do NO WORK. If you had a business that required security guards, why on earth would you hire them at all if you knew they are just gonna sleep and not do their job because it's boring? You are better of paying nobody to do nothing than paying a security guard to do nothing.
