    That's a brilliant trailer. I know it's 4 years ago now, but i hope you're still traveling and inventing.

      Thank you, the trailer is over 12 years old now and still going strong. Last load was a 70 - 80kg tangle of rope from the beach last weekend.

    what a good build!
    very versatile and even looking good.
    (by the way: you maybe could put
    a safety vest [or similar stuff] on the cute trailer
    so it has not to fear being run over in bad weather or night time)
    i hope all is fine.

      Thanks, it's proven to be very useful. I suppose it is more of a camouflage colour rather than visible. Maybe it could benefit from some high vis. It does have a couple of large red reflectors on the rear.

    Any video of it being pulled by a bicycle? Just a minute or two going along a street would be neat to watch! On my channel, I made a trailer from a hand truck. That way it can carry my shopping cart both to and from the store by bicycle, but once home, the hand truck is used to directly get the groceries (and shopping cart) up to the kitchen in one straight shot!
    Well done!

    You did an amazing job on the construction of the trailer! So much thought went into the design, love the idea of brakes.. the hookup was a little bulky but effective. My only concern would be the hitch arm clearance with the bicycle tire, is there no way you could get a curve put into that at a shop that has a roller bender?

    • @Ed.R
      @Ed.R  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, I was living on a small island so had way too much time to think about it.
      The hitch arm clearance could be better but in general it's not a problem. If I go over a lump or off an edge I try and turn at the same time so the wheel rises beside the hitch arm.
      Putting a slight bend in it would be ideal, just an extra couple of inches needed.

      @@mrMacGoover Yes I have never been so grateful of having a family member still living on an island and of the life I built here. It is repaying me at a time of most need.

    My only concern is the way it is hitched to your bike. That high up on your seat post, if you snag something with the front of the trailer, I'm afraid it could snatch your bike right out from under you. Flipping you back against the trailer, in the process. Nice craftsmanship on the rest of the trailer, though. I'm just concerned about the hitch arrangement. I also like the electrical connection. Nice pilfery puzzler.

    • @Ed.R
      @Ed.R  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your comment.
      I agree it's not ideal but I hate the bent tow bars. Difficult to make strong enough and always interfere with turning in one direction. The main issue isn't crashing as that's not good with any trailer and would throw you over the handle bars. It's the difficulty keeping the front wheel on the ground on steep hills and keeping balanced turning uphill. Any lumps or bumps under one wheel tends to pull the bike sideways but you get used to it.

    You have spent a lot of time making this and it's a great job, I've made a few bike trailers but didn't make brakes for any of them but wish I had. Can you pull two levers ok with one hand?

    • @Ed.R
      @Ed.R  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks, no what I tend to do is use the trailer brakes instead of the bicycles rear brake. In most cases because the towing bike has rubbish rim brakes I use just the disc brakes on the trailer.

  • @Finding_Arcadia
    @Finding_Arcadia 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm trying to make something similar for a mobile bookstore, and 500 is about my max expected weight for the trailer. My biggest issue and question is how you made the connector piece for the brake system with the jigsaw. Did you hand make this, or commission someone to do it?

    • @Ed.R
      @Ed.R  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I cut and filed it out of a piece of stainless steel myself. I reckon there are simpler shapes and ways of doing it. I created this elaborate design but all it really achieves is retension of the cable ends when separated.
      I reckon a cantilever brake straddle wire carrier yoke could do the job.
      Good luck that's an interesting project.

    What is the size of the wheel?

    • @Ed.R
      @Ed.R  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      26 inch which is larger than I'd recommend for a trailer. Sideways forces create higher loads on the spokes than with a smaller wheel. I use this size because they are the most common. Also gives great ground clearance.

    • @TheOtherShoreOutdoors

      @@Ed.R Thanks! Im looking for make my own cart and i was intrigued about the reason why most carts use small wheels. I found one advantage in using the same wheel size than the bike: you can use the same tyres, inner tube, spokes, etc for replacement.

    That bike camper looks to heavy to pull with just a bike..not saying you can't do it but why would you want to pull all that weight??

    • @Ed.R
      @Ed.R  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is too heavy for taking any distance. It was built for cargo and I mostly use it without the cover and solid floor. This means a trailer weight of 30kg to move 125kg of cargo which isn't bad.
      Camping was just an additional use for it if I wanted. Had considered taking it to nearby islands so most of the journey would be by ferry.
