My Dad built me a side car bike when I was about 11yrs old. Such a cool thing for a father to build for his son. He used a solid, heavy, department store BMX frame to start, then 1.25"×1.25" angle to form the main frame. The third wheel was attached using a road bike fork, and a plywood box let me haul around friends, junk, or use for my paper route. This video reminds me of a book my Dad had from the late 70's with instructions and illustrations on how to build all kinds of crazy bike based projects. I believe it had instructions for a unicycle, a ski bike, a side car, an ice bike, tandem, and I think a side by side. Anyway, this book encouraged the repurposeing of old bike parts, which I still do today. At first, watching this video, I was like, "why not make it nice"? I thought, is it so hard to pick up a little rod and angle from a steel yard? But then I caught on to the flavor of the build. I like it. Though, my inner engineer would have liked the wheelbase a bit wider. Also, since there would no longer be any leaning, I would have modified the drop outs or something to lower the bottom brackets a bit, maybe even outfitting both "engines" with 165mm crank arms, leaving just enough pedal clearance, thereby lowering the riders' position. This would allow the whole thing to be lower. I know aerodynamics was not a consideration here, obviously. But we know now that air resistance is the greatest force acting against objects like bicycles. While impressed with what these folks built, it's really nothing that couldn't have been done 100 years ago. In fact, more than anything, in function and construction, it most closely resembles the first automobile. Which, if you know your history of rolling things, was indeed electric. One thing really impressed me was the redundancy of 3 wheel operation. Haha. Good work. What a happy, good natured, spirited production. Qualities far too sparse in our media presently.

in order for it to be protected from crosswinds, the best solution is to add weight (preferably to the bottom), but if it weighs a lot, it will be very difficult to ride on hills. The solar panels are only useful depending on the weather. Getting a flat seems really dangerous and pulling over could be awkward/dangerous depending on where you are. Kevlar Aramid fibre, stitch it like fabric to the shapes you desire, then coat with vinlyestre resin. The final shape will be quite durable and, if you like, bullet-proof, which one might find a useful quality in the coming days . . .
Good fun even though my engineering sensibilities were fairly violated. Maybe mountain bikes for a bit more strength. Flip down mattresses or inflatable. lithium batteries, not lead. Some level of air tightness in the camping config for modest thermal management. Rear peg so it doesn't topple back. It could also be two independent bikes that could latch together with inflatable roof.
Great job!!! Well done!!! The idea it's good. I think that instead using two bikes, you can make a recumbent trike (two wheels back, one in front). Again, very good job, specially for use a lot of garbage and scrap parts.
That's what I thought, it seemed to go fine even when they lost one of the front wheels, which was really surprising to me. Great stuff, super entertaining video!
You guys are amazing, makes me want to do this with my kids so we can go camping , put some bike racks on the side for 2 real bikes to bike around once you made it to your destination
that knubbly foil @ 7:50 makes for superb curved sandwich panels, when you glue coroplast to both sides with what ever sticks. (caulking silicone works decently) quite sturdy and a great insulation, and one can fit supporting structures between the nubs. if you wanna go overkill, inject it with expanding foam.
More likely is this was built just for clicks and will be scrapped.. heck they probably didnt even spend the night on the woods, but just film bit and went back. Concept has its benefits, but depends highly by climate and local laws what ever this is practical solution.
@@Hellsong89 I agree. This is a stupid design. If the signals don't work, you have no way to signal. The bike relies on having two riders, it's extremely non-aerodynamic, the solar panels are only useful in sunny weather, etc... it's more practical to just attach a bike trailer and pack tent and whatever else you need. It's main usefulness is for getting views with a quirky video.
Good point, larger, more sturdy wheels would have been sensible, although these sporty ones make it easier to pedal and improve the range on the batteries.
@@harrydwyer Love the 'cockroach' bike! Are you considering putting some kind of heavy duty clear polyurethane on/around your windscreen wheels? Maybe even thick clear vinyl would do the trick too for those crisp mornings :)
The five year old comment was a reoccurring theme. Congrats on the build. I liked seeing the legs sticking out. Makes me wish I didn't know it was bicycles and human pedaled power. That way I can be surprised when the for sale/sold caravan spontaneously pops out feet and starts riding away.
This is awesome!! Makes me wish I was young and adventurous again!! This bike trailer is so damn cute! It would be fun to go peddling around in, not near traffic that is!!
Whereas you might call it an "off grid, low grade massage", the glass-half-empty type might refer to it as "death wobble". Either way I love the project.
I feel like some bigger bike wheels or mountain bike wheels would be better for the cockroach, and some plastic sheets to put in the cockpit holes to help with the rain, but then you’ll have to make a windshield wiper for it, but this was an awesome thing to watch get built, you have inspired me to do things like this, but at the moment I can’t, one day I will be able to.
Awesome. Rear Axles should be same wide as the body to give you better stability and interior space for sleeping and cooking, etc. Great job for attempting this feat.
This was great. I want to see one now made of proper materials (they can still be recycled, just a bit more... processed? XD) with precision made components so it's 'as good as can be'. Maybe with the addition of the ability to use the power from the solar panels to assist in moving it? (E-bike style...) If I was rich I'd finance it just to see it done. :P
It’s very clever that you guys made that rvb. You can pelt it, or you can use a electric motor to make it go to. Then you put a solar panels to charge the batteries, but you guys didn’t think about putting a generator to charge the batteries too. I believe that’s you guys could put one on.
i'd have used bikes with suspension maybe, like mountainbikes, would need beefier motors and batteries but would have been slightly more comfortable and practical
I agree to get to the camping spot, as most of those are off paved roads the tires and suspension would be more heavy duty like a mountain bike. I might have two of the electric motors one for each bike then, with more solar panels on the machine. The bike could be almost the same weight as old Steel frames if you find aluminum mountain bikes preferably used ones as I would hate to do this to a good new bike.
It resembles the vehicles of "The Flintstones", but instead of using their feet for moving from one place to another, they are using bicycles. Really cool idea, house on wheels changed into house on bycicle, which is pretty much the same. I love the idea.
@@harrydwyer Fair enough, though on a cycle build I'd be looking to shave off as much unnecessary weight as possible. Clever build tbh and I'm surprised we don't see more vehicles like this in the developing world given their low cost and high utility. Would it be possible to come up with a third section which bridges the two beds? If you two aren't shy and are secure in your sexuality, it would be a good way to expand the surface area for sleeping on. If I were you, I'd also be looking to fit the vehicle with a second "house battery" for lights, the tablet, perhaps a heated blanket, so there would be no concern about drawing too deeply during the night on the battery you need for propulsion. I imagine with a bit of elbow grease, as it's a semi enclosed volume, you could also rig a bottle of propane that would do double duty as the gas for the burner you cook with, and also for running a small catalytic cabin heater. Have you seen Paul Elkins? His channel is all about building vehicles very similar to yours out of coroplast. He's developed all sorts of nifty design touches which make optimal use of limited interior space.
Yes bridging the beds would make it a lot more comfortable. It would make for a nice big bed. A leisure battery setup could be a good idea. Ideally i'd like to beef up the batteries some more and replace the lead acid. I've been looking at the old laptop battery recycling but not sure I can face it, seems quite a mission. Yes love Paul Elkins! Looking forward to watching Hampture come together. What about a hamster submersible?
@@harrydwyer I built one a while back, but it still relied on an airline up to a surface air compressor. There's a student project along the same lines somebody else built which comes right up if you search "hamster submarine" here on TH-cam. The barrier to eliminating the airline is finding a small enough bottle of compressed air designed to refill easily from standard scuba compressors. The Spare Air and similar micro pony bottles seem like a good fit. It'd still just be a constant flow system, actually building a rebreather style life support system with CO2 absorbant and the works is beyond my skill level. That means a relatively limited dive time, subject to the same depth limitations as scuba diving. Any of the recreational ROVs available today would be a suitable basis. It'd just need the air bottle, a valve, and a water tight cockpit affixed to it.
@@harrydwyer Hey I love your videos maybe get some inspirations from this video: th-cam.com/video/ixBEUj4eAIU/w-d-xo.html I guess you could also use a gas tank to build the main body of the submarine

That's what I thought, it seemed to go fine even when they lost one of the front wheels, which was really surprising to me.
Great stuff, super entertaining video!
Good points. I deeply respect the recycling nature of this whole project.
Thanks for the great laugh and innovative inspire.
You guys are amazing, makes me want to do this with my kids so we can go camping , put some bike racks on the side for 2 real bikes to bike around once you made it to your destination
TH-cam gold.
that knubbly foil @ 7:50 makes for superb curved sandwich panels, when you glue coroplast to both sides with what ever sticks. (caulking silicone works decently)
quite sturdy and a great insulation, and one can fit supporting structures between the nubs. if you wanna go overkill, inject it with expanding foam.
May we never grow up. Good video, Thank you.
You guys cracked me up! :D The Cockroach .. what a fitting name! LOL!
Eating a meal of beans while sleeping in a 4 foot room. But it’s not like enclose the bottom has ventilation. But still why beans for celebration?
Very cool just loved how you WORKED THROUGH THE KINKS
The way your co- driver panicked made me burst into laughter 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🇰🇪🇰🇪
Here in Costa Rica it rains too much so we need that kind of vehicle.
UR my kinda of Makers! Just try & loosen up, have a little fun will ya 😉
Looks like Archie, the flying ship of Night Owl in Watchmen
If Archie was built from garbage.
I thought the same thing
This is one of my all time favorite you tube videos. So fun, want to build! Love the energy and slap dash that went into this.
I can't remember the last time I was so entertained by a video. You have definitely made my day. Cheers.
This is actually the coolest thing I’ve ever seen
its a prototype.. so yes its super ugly... but proof of concept I assume is the goal.. better design comes later .. i imagine
alfriedar A
It’s soo newm newm tho
More likely is this was built just for clicks and will be scrapped.. heck they probably didnt even spend the night on the woods, but just film bit and went back. Concept has its benefits, but depends highly by climate and local laws what ever this is practical solution.
I think it's cute. They ought to have called it something else, maybe.
Mabie use mountain bike wheels?
Good point, larger, more sturdy wheels would have been sensible, although these sporty ones make it easier to pedal and improve the range on the batteries.
@@harrydwyer ah, I see.
Flimsy wheels make it more iffy-looking and spectacular.
*maybe
@@harrydwyer Love the 'cockroach' bike! Are you considering putting some kind of heavy duty clear polyurethane on/around your windscreen wheels? Maybe even thick clear vinyl would do the trick too for those crisp mornings :)
I can't even figure out how I wanna turn my Honda Element into a camper for the least amount of money. These guys build a bicycle camper..Great job
Oh this made me giggle ....it’s fabulous ...well done guys 🤣🤣
ok boomer
This channel is so under rated it is really amazing! Keep up the amazing vids! I subbed
would love to own an advanced version of it, i.e. one where I won't wake up with a raccoon welcoming itself in via the undercarriage.
This is awesome!! Makes me wish I was young and adventurous again!! This bike trailer is so damn cute! It would be fun to go peddling around in, not near traffic that is!!
This needs to become a feature film.
Whereas you might call it an "off grid, low grade massage", the glass-half-empty type might refer to it as "death wobble". Either way I love the project.
first genuine lol of the whole comment thread. I thank you.
Absolutely incredible job! Anybody who thinks it's foolish is the same kind of person who laughed at the Wright brothers!
i'd love to see if this thing can endure some kind of cross country road trip
I feel like some bigger bike wheels or mountain bike wheels would be better for the cockroach, and some plastic sheets to put in the cockpit holes to help with the rain, but then you’ll have to make a windshield wiper for it, but this was an awesome thing to watch get built, you have inspired me to do things like this, but at the moment I can’t, one day I will be able to.
This is just too cool! This is the first video I’ve seen of you guys and it won’t be the last. Have a great one
I had a smile the whole way through this video, my cheeks started to hurt. Good work lads :)
was that the bloke from grand designs
Hey maybe call it the "Dung Beetle"... because it's like rolling a big pile of Sh*t all around! Just kidding..it's pretty cool.
Ha! Accurate name. I love dung beetles.
Fuzzy Was
schwin a baigo
This is helping the world by recycling, not using gas powered products AND he’s using a SOLAR car! Anyway u just earned a subscriber
(E-bike style...)
If I was rich I'd finance it just to see it done. :P
Noooooo!
What, and lose that rustic charm or perhaps favella chic, no way!
This looks exactly how I imagined a modern pioneer wagon would look
Total cost to produce: $14.73
Cost of insurance: $937/year
lol probably even more
It’s very clever that you guys made that rvb. You can pelt it, or you can use a electric motor to make it go to. Then you put a solar panels to charge the batteries, but you guys didn’t think about putting a generator to charge the batteries too. I believe that’s you guys could put one on.
This bike is the modern Oregon tail buggys! Shoutout from New York! Great content guys!
We need more people to build this type of home bikes system and maybe we can start an new revolution....
i'd have used bikes with suspension maybe, like mountainbikes, would need beefier motors and batteries but would have been slightly more comfortable and practical
*Yes, also the all terrain tires & wheels.*
@@caseysmith544 good luck welding aluminum frames, very tricky
Make it Desmond and we will buy more than one!
@@funkyman909 no then you use PVC to connect bikes togther. Not other old bikes. Still would weigh the same as a current solar bike they made.
You guys are rad! 😂❤
Silly rig, but it is very very cool. I wonder if you can come up with something thats even more out of the ordinary. Stay well, be safe, God bless
It resembles the vehicles of "The Flintstones", but instead of using their feet for moving from one place to another, they are using bicycles. Really cool idea, house on wheels changed into house on bycicle, which is pretty much the same. I love the idea.
more details like closed window or thiccer walls to protect more heat and it will be super 'car for camping :)
'
Less details like closed windows and thicker walls and the project is simpler and lighter and still ready for camping.
one of the most ridiculous things I've seen...i loved it
The best part is it's ambidextrous, so you can drive it in any country
level of creativity 999999..thats awesome guys.. hope to see more
I see this but a little bigger and make it look like an old stage coach. Wonder if the Oregon trail is still open lol
I want to make one too! So cool.. Made me laugh too. =]
Lead batteries? Not lithium? In this day and age?
Yes I know, a tad oldschool. Useful ballast at least, to stop it tipping up, and a lot cheaper.
@@harrydwyer it would be more stable with 6 wheels, the bikes further apart and the lead batteries between the rear wheels...
can you build a submarine?
Not sure it would be very air tight. But we'll always give it a go.
heeeHHeeEEhs....f.a.f. lol.
I think this thing would make at least ONE dive. LOL
@@harrydwyer Hey I love your videos maybe get some inspirations from this video: th-cam.com/video/ixBEUj4eAIU/w-d-xo.html
I guess you could also use a gas tank to build the main body of the submarine
Or an aeroplane?
the white membrane you found ,is used to protect the basement , you build something under street level, you put a isolation ,and after you use that membrane to wrap it all up
We didnt have youtube in 2002 to put our exact project with exact name. This is exactly how life works on earth.
