  • You've all been waiting for Loki...The 2024 Ford Super Duty F-250 Tremor 7.3 Godzilla to take on the famous IKE test, but what if that test only gives you limited data. What if you wanted to know how the truck performs in a test longer than 10 minutes. I've been towing with this truck, heavier and lighter over the past three months. I will link those videos below. In this video, I'll set out from the homebase in Denver Colorado, and run the Eisenhower side of the tunnel, up through copper mountain, over Fremont pass into leadville. I'll fill up and run it right back over through the JOhnson side of the tunnel. I'll even give you a little history on the EJMT or the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel, which has been mislabled for years in other videos. The big Johnson is the side the other channels use.
I'll break down fuel economy, engine temps, trans temps. How does the 7.3 Godzilla with 4.30 engine brake? How does the 7.3 Godzilla keep speed going down hills. To do this, I'll hook up River our 14k fifthwheel and yank it up the hill. I'll give my honest objective opinion of how it does agains the RAM HD and the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD with 6.6 L8T and Allison 10 speed.
At the end I'll break down the final run numbers and see if it really is a gas vs diesel choice anymore.
Please like and subscribe to the channel.

Great video as always and awesome truck. 100% agree on the Diesel comparison and thank you because this channel was a big part of me dumping my diesel for the 7.3 gas and I don’t miss it at all. I have noticed that my truck will apply the brakes in regular and adaptive cruise control mode going down hill. I wish they would have not made it do it in regular mode just because where I travel its unnecessary to slow the vehicle coming down an overpass, I would rather it just gain a few mph to keep the momentum going instead of using the brakes. Anyway, thanks for the video, always enjoy them.

Great review, ford has definitely started a new trend when they came out with the 7.3. I been a diesel guy my whole life and owned stuff from big trucks to heavy equipment. Diesels are so complex now, that if you are not working them hard, they will not be reliable like they once were. Without a doubt the 7.3 and 6.6 are the best gassers. Im hoping that ram will put the 6.7 cummins gas option eventually also. Im exicited with what the future holds for gassers, because the EPA is crushing diesels. Keep up the great content!

Good review. I have the 2020 F350 dually with 4.30 gears and load a 4000lbs Truckcamper in the back. I had the 2017 F350 6.7 srw first but the payload and stability were underwhelming. Totally agree with your conclusion. The gas 7.3 is a beast and for almost all situations is enough motor.

Great video, a lot of data provided which allows most truck buyers to truly see how the new gasser engines are built. As a duramax owner and a diesel technician the new gas trucks are the way to go. The new diesel engines are so choked up due to the emissions equipment and they really don’t perform night and day difference over the gas engines. I hope the 7.3 can keep proving itself and Im looking forward to more videos to come. Again great review

Great test. We did a video about towing our 12,500# trailer (5th wheel) with the 7.3 Godzilla on a long trip. I think it tows every bit as well as our older 6.0 PowerStroke diesel (we have the 3:73 gears). We live in the up and downs area of Pennsylvania, but haven’t had a long stretch like this to test it out like you’re showing here. Thanks for showing your pull test!

240 degree trans temp is a bit more than I’d prefer especially considering it wasn’t terribly hot outside. But great showing overall. I tow and use my truck on moderate rocky off-road conditions, a gasser that’s significantly lighter than a diesel but can still competently tow definitely has some appeal for me. When purchase time rolls around for me the 7.3 tremor is definitely on the list!

Listening to that 33:14 transmission shift and shit and shift is painful. It keeps it from locking up as much. The gears should be locked out so it’s not shifting so much. That’s one big difference with the diesel not shifting as much. What was the temperature outside?

Although I've never been on the IKE and obviously that is no joke a per pulling long grades or holding back down the opposite side, the Fremont I have been over just with a pickup and it like others of the more winding two lane passes in Colorado they are no joke as slow speed corners one has to slow down for and the traffic piling up behind a slow moving unit trying to pass. Even though you never filmed that pass in a forward facing angle and like you said the video would be many hours long if you had, I suspect some viewers not familiar with passes ( flat landers that have never ever been on roads like this ) its hard to grasp the challenge these present to both driver operating the vehicle properly and the proper equipment ( a capable enough tow rig ) to keep it under control and not go and fly off a sharp mountain curve due to driving like that yahoo did passing with a smaller truck and yet fairly large ball hitch trailer. Jeremy, like I said its been years since I was on the Fremont highway 91 as well as having been over the other two north/south route highways 9 and 24 but I was quite happy just to be driving my older half ton pickup with nothing behind as I know all too well of its lack of capability out of the factory ( as I found out ) with lack of engine power, transmission failure prone, and the brakes not being what they need to be size wise. I would rather be driving tractor trailer through those passes honestly, yes slow but with a jake brake and an 18 speed manual up to the task ( or if like TFL and get a pickup similar to yours and trailer just handed to me to drive LOL ).

Nice video. My main observations are:
    1) the 4.30 like I have always suspected doesn’t really offer an advantage at highway speeds (60 mph+) thanks to the 10 speed transmissions. You were pretty well limited to 4th gear on those 60 mph pulls which would be nearly the same final drive ratio as 3rd gear with the 3.73 rear gear. Where the 4.30 would be a benefit is the slow speed pulls (45 mph and down) because you’re definitely getting too 3rd gear at that point. Maybe even 2nd.
    2) I’ve ran cruise before too with my gas truck (2022 2500 Silverado 6.6 gas and 6 speed) and I’m just not crazy about using it. I can see in this test on the “Big Johnson” run you were definitely getting a lot of gear hunting from the truck trying to keep you on 60 mph. Same thing happens with my truck on really steep grades.
Still, good test. You’re right that diesels are not necessary anymore. And depending on the price of fuel they may even cost more for the same trips. Now if you want one, get one but these new gassers are more than capable.

@matthewanderson9912 thanks for coming back and checking it out. Your observations are correct. @@automotiveinquiries9673 no problem. I try to watch your videos when I can. I have missed a few lately. Had a lot going on but I definitely wanted to take time to see this one because I wanted to see how the 4.30 did in the real world.
This truck is certainly a lot nicer than Kong. No denying that. And the 7.3 makes more horsepower. That much is evident. I think where I live in Kentucky it wouldn’t show up as much as it does where you live due to the elevation. Here about 2500’ is as much as I have on highways. I can get to 4,000’ but it’s pretty much off road type stuff.
Looks are subjective but to me it doesn’t get much better than the Chevy’s.

My 3 dollar question is? I am looking at a 2020 crew cab 4x4 7.3 5500 11 ft flatbed with 81000 on her.. she has 4.88s. I havent drove it yet but the owner sent me a video of it driving. I have a 17,300 lb toy hauler 45ft (dry) so that will be the purpose of the tow rig.. I would really appreciate any comments back!! Love your videos!

    • @automotiveinquiries9673
      @automotiveinquiries9673  9 วันที่ผ่านมา

@LTDan-pk3mx thanks, I appreciate the feedback. As for the truck. The toy hauler is heavy, so the f550 may be worth a shot so you have plenty of payload. In my experience with the 4.88s. I've had them in the v10 f450s, i had them on my 08 dually f350. That is a deep gear ratio for towing and very good. It did hurt mpgs, in all the teucks over the 4.30. Keeping in mind the flatbed are usually pretty beefy and add a lot of weight to the truck. Loki, is not fast by any means when not towing. If this is just a work and tow rig, then I think it does fine. Being an f550 with a heavy flat bed and towing 17300, it's going to be everything that the 7.3 can do. Our f450s with v10s worked and worked, but with those being reg cans and having 12 foot stake body and lift gate, they were matched for all they could do. I don't know how much you'll use this in slow and go or short trips when not hauling, but with that dry weight, a diesel (although much more money), may be a happier choice in the end. I think the zilla in f250 and f350 form towing max, 20k ish will get it done, but the 550 with a steel bed and that big of a trailer, I think it would be maxed. But if you get a sweet, can't pass up deal, I would be intrigued as to how it would do. I would also confirm maintenance and a carfax. A big truck like that, you'd want to see the severe service maintenance which is 5k or less, especially since 20 is thw first year of the zilla and unfortunately the most popular year for the zilla delam and failure.

This was good and very informative. We have a 2011 Wildcat 32QBT overall length is 35 feet. We only weigh 9800 dry. Max GVW loaded of just over 12,000. I pulled with a 2004 Ram 2500 with the Cummins prior to owning my 2022 F350 with the 7.3 Godzilla. Both trucks ran the 3:73 and I honestly thing the Ford does everything just as well if not better in some cases due to the 10 speed. I originally ordered a 4:30 gear but decided to change to the 3:73 just before it was built. I only tow the fifth wheel 4 to 6 times a year and just did not feel I needed the 4:30. I would love to pull my trailer with the 4:30 someday just to see how much different it feels. I did notice your truck doing the same thing mine does when towing in cruise and that is constantly shifting to keep speed going up a grade. I prefer to lock it in manual mode and hold 5th or 6th gear depending on the grade rather than let it constantly shift. I understand you left it in cruise to show your point of maintaining speed and most people are going to put the truck in drive and let it do what it does but I do feel using manual control and letting the engine maintain a few more RPMs in the long run will be better for the transmission. What model is your Wildcat?
