My first date with my then 17 year old girlfriend was at a Steeleye Span gig. Maddy was wearing that same yellow dress and she sang and danced up on some kind of boom arm for one of the numbers. Magical. That was back in the ‘mid 70s. My girl is 62 now , I’m 73 and we’re sweethearts still.

I thought at turning 50 this year I had heard all the classics, even though in 1975 I was only a toddler, but I'm in to 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's music. I had heard of Steeleye Span but didn't know their music. Then one day last week 'all around my hat' started on my you tube playlist. I immediately checked to see who sang that wonderful song, and I am now a Steeleye Span fan. Maddie carries herself with such grace and the other band members are great too. The two top songs on English radio were all around my hat and I'm a lumberjack by Monty python. I'd never heard either song before, and my first impression was that British radio seemed pretty weird. Over the next few days they both grew on me, and I soon realized that British radio was in fact pretty groovy.

Me and my friend Eileen went to the pub at lunchtime and had one too many drinks and we played this record and were singing & dancing around the pub, then everyone was joining in. Rather jolly, we went back to work but was quickly fired. Eileen was my best mate at the time and she sadly died in 1990 but i have some great memories of us having lots of fun and laughter and of course, good songs like this one.

I remember seeing her perform with Steeleye Span at the Berkeley School of Music, and then later with simply a keyboardist at Johnny D's Uptown in Somerville. I approached her with an ancient Steeleye Span album and asked her to sign it. She could not have been more gracious; asking me about myself and introducing me to the keyboardist (I wish I could remember his name). Lovely person.

Me too, Matthew. This was just everyday musical fodder at the time as there was so much talent around in those days. Now, in hindsight, much hindsight, I realise how skilled and talented Steeleye Span and others of the era were. Today's rubbish is so artificial and/or electronic noise.

"possibly the greatest song of all time"
Definitely not as good as all that, but it is certainly a commercial peak for the group and for folk-rock. It did involve creative compromises for them, though, not least working with Mike Batt.

Bear in mind that all the sounds on that album are as heavily treated as mid-seventies recording equipment would allow. (It was taped at AIR Studios in Oxford Street in summer 1975; George Martin was able to equip his place with up-to-the-minute kit.) f you want to hear Maddy's voice fairly pure, I advise listening to one of their earlier, more basically recorded albums.
