Red Bull finally realized that ideal 2nd driver needs to be experienced "top of the midfield" driver, someone who is good enough to win a race but not good enough to win championship. McLaren had that with Berger and Coulthard, Ferrari with Barrichello and Mercedes with Bottas. Heck, you can argue that even Webber falls into that category.

with that said, why are there rumors floating around that Red Bull is looking elsewhere when Checo's contract expires? I don't get it. RB has a consistant 1/2 finisher... Worst case scenario, 1/5 finisher. That will easily allow RB to win the Driver's championship and Constructor's title in the same year. In my eyes, that is the perfect scenario for RB, win both titles. It's not like they can have 2 first place finishers and 2 driver's champions in the same season? So what's the point in dropping Checo? If RB decides to sign another driver, there's no guarantee that they will be able to bring in the same points as Checo.
It's not like RB is looking for a 2nd driver to overthrow or replace Max, that is just silly. RB is heavily invested in him. All RB is looking for is a solid 2nd driver. To pick up where Max leaves off and maximize points when needed. And they already found one, Checo.
If RB is really looking for a new driver, they will just sabotage themselves at the end... Max will continue to do what Max does... and hope that the 2nd driver can pull in 2nd place finishes... There are no guarantees.

Checo is the perfect man for red bull... he is so similar to Mark Webber.. decent qualifier, super consistent racer, safe pair of hands.. but just not fast enough to catch up to Max just like Webber was to Seb.. but a perfect duo to dominate the constructor's championship.. on top of that, Checo and Max so far have had a friendly relationship unlike the Mark and Seb..
At 33, Checo can easily give another 4-5 years at his best.. so red Bull should keep him until the next regs arrive in 2026..

      @mamavswild ปีที่แล้ว +13

@@landonboomsma2594 There are bound to be issues like these, especially since the allegation of what Checo did makes Max’ anger more understandable….it wasn’t even anger. It appears he had told both Checo and RBR leadership that they should not ask him to do Checo any favors because he wouldn’t honor it…it was RBR that put Max in the position of ‘standing by’ his declaration or making him fold by putting him in a corner while under international pressure. Did RBR forget who they were pressuring?? It’s the one guy who cannot be pressured so…I don’t know. It seems that the issues have indeed been ironed out and while they may not be the very best of friends, they have a friendly and most importantly, respectful attitude around each other.
Perhaps our obsession with teammate ‘bromances’ fuels a high bar of expectation that may not be fair for drivers.
It isn’t as bad as Seb’s multi-21 incident which according to Seb many months after the fact was an ACTIVE revenge move against a perceived slight Mark did to him several races back…I don’t remember what it was, does anybody else bc I’d like to know.

Gasly was great at torro Ross, he got in the bull when he wasn't ready. And once he made a few mistakes it snowballed on him. @@PulsingKrugotvoid Fair points but not everyone is going to be a Max, Fernando or Lewis. That's the problem Red Bull will face when Max retires or if another team succesfully lures him away. He set the bar so high maybe too high. It will tough for anyone to emulate it within the team. Also the team was so built around Max with Papa Jos almost always in the garage there's no doubt there will be some influence. As Daniel Ricciardo had said in DTS he saw where the team's direction was going. It was one of the reasons why he left. That started the audition for that second seat. Red Bull may be a championship team but if they don't nurture their junior a little better they'll be biting more than they could chew. They hired Perez who is now struggling. What does that say about Red Bull's junior program? On the flipside I'm very happy Sainz and Albon are no longer under the RB sphere and they're doing well at their current teams. Gasly was doing fine for a while with Alpha Tauri and starting fresh at Alpine.

Many people cling to the Brazil 2021 incident to show how Checo and Max don’t get along…this has been echoed by pundits like Ralf Schumacher who simply doesnt know these drivers any more than we do.
These are guys, not high school girls (and I say that as a woman, I know how we tend to operate); they worked out their issues and while they may not be ‘besties’, it’s obvious they have a healthy respect for each other and get along in a friendly manner. Indeed, both sides of the garage are in as healthy and stable a state now than I’ve ever seen them since beginning to follow RBR and F1 since 2009.
I think that our appetite for teammate ‘bromances’ sets the bar unreasonably high, especially in high profile teams. There just isn’t the drama between Max and Checo that SOME people seem to genuinely hope for.

Also, maybe they weren't ready for the pressure of a top team. You can't except every good driver will perform like once in a generation talents Max, Lewis, Fernando, Seb etc. I'm glad they're still doing well. Gasly did so much better after going back to AT & RB kept Albono around thankfully. I am also really happy RB gave Checo a chance. He is a really good driver and is shining. He absolutely deserves it. I do wish he was more consistent tho. There is still a gap to Max. I'm sure it's difficult to match up to these great drivers like Nando & Stroll. Perfectly put there, Checo is a ‘safe bet driver’ for red bull.
As for the Ricciardo video, ever since he re joined red bull he’s been in a big percentage of their PR posts. It makes me thing 2 different situations.
1: DR knows he’s out the running for a championship even if he gets the 2nd red bull seat, so he would get the 2nd seat if/when checo retires.
2: (more unlikely) RB will give more help/advantage to Checo to win the championship this year, which if he does win it, will do what Rosberg did and retire on a high. Opening the seat for DR to play the same role checo has in helping max go on to win more titles

Points are great about Sergio. He has been my #1 Motorsports driver since his GP2 days. He is still my #1 driver today. I have seen him evolve as a driver in the last 5 years or so that make me extremely proud of him. So far, this year i think he knows he needs to keep pushing and producing great results, and he has delivered in pretty much every way. Can Sergio beat Max? I don't think so....but RB have no reason to look for another driver, or even remotely consider Danny Ric for any reason, no way. Still i think Sergio has the mettle to handle the pressure and keep producing great results!

Really? I personally think Alpine would be his best option. He's previously worked with the team and can offer some experience to the team. I personally see him struggling if he went to Aston to replace Stroll, but unless something goes dramatically wrong, Aston won't get rid of Stroll, plus they have Drugovich waiting in the wings, but it would be interesting who would partner Drugovich once Alonso retires or Stroll is kicked out.

ideally, red bull want yuki tsunoda after sergio leaves whenever that is. yuki is on his 3rd season and is doing a very consistent, calm headed job currently and that is what red bull wants. someone who can score wins when max cannot but someone who is also too slow to challenge him when there are no problems

I strangely put 2021 down to Mercedes timidness in strategy in France, AD, US and a few other races. Perez being close is what allowed Red Bull to go bold and scared Mercedes into racing conservatively. Let's not forget that Lewis also would've had enough of a gap to box for new mediums or softs at that lap 55 SC if Checo didn't hold him up.

I mean, it seems like they're always looking for the next wunderkind to challenge the established veteran stars and either they sink (like Speed, Kvyat, Gasly, and Albon) or they swim (like Vettel, Ricciardo, and Verstappen). But it also seems like there's very little time for adaptation and development at Red Bull. There doesn't seem to be time to learn the car and adapt to the team.

Yuki sooner rather than later will be in that Red bull. It's no longer just Helmut or Horner calling the shots. Ford CEO is a Perez fan. The Red bull CEO is a Yuki fan and a known critic of how Max handled the Brazil situation. (Context: Post Brazil 2022 there were some camera shots of the CEO yelling at Helmut Marko and honrer although the finger waving was pointed towards Helmut. It's now known inside the paddock that Red bull boards have Red bull racing aren't on the same page. Interview after rumours of Alpha being sold asked towards Helmut who simply said I have had 1 meeting with him so far and hoping to talk sometime in the future. Red bull also outlined the plain for F1 team in recent march Report (publicly traded companies are legally obligated to provide this) which showed Liam or Daniel may be placed at alpha tauri if anything happens to Red bull drivers and Yuki will replace them, also it noted that all contract from February of 2022 will be under Red bull management not Red bull racing

I like checo very much. I think he's the best second driver red bull could ask for in the past couple of years, given their track record, and even though he's been closer than ever to max, I'm slightly disappointed in him this season. I actually (or naively) thought he could fight at the same level as Max, but I now see that as virtually impossible for him to be world champion, other than max having serious reliability issues from now on. The Miami gp was really an eye opener and just showed how fast max really is. Checo kept trying to find excuses saying RB didn't give him the best strategy, but he was simply slower, losing p1 despite an enormous advantage. Now I believe checo's real objective this year is to fend off Alonso from getting P2 in the driver's championship. That's just unacceptable, tbh.
