Before you started the build you said something that really stood out and sums up this project: This tractor owes me nothing. I owe to it/her. I know exactly what you mean by that. It's really nice to see someone who runs a big farm where it wouldn't be a huge problem to just get a new machine. To actually take the time and put in the work and hours to rebuild something like a machine that others may consider a junk.

I just wanted to tell you that you are awesome, people suck. You are a huge inspiration. Right now I am one of those city slickers that has nothing. I am working my ass off to get something of my own. In about six months I will be graduating from college for the second time and taking over our family farm. Something I have been waiting for, for about a decade. It is small around 160 acres and probably wont make any money but I am excited to start farming/ranching. Thanks for the inspiration keep up the videos.

I respect the fact that you documented and shared your failure in getting this tractor to start. That's real life. Most people would edit that out and share the video of the tractor starting up "for the first time."

I was thinking the same thing. Work on enough stuff and things like this are bound to happen. That's reality.

This is probably my first comment to you. I am a small farmer (165 tillable) in Indiana. Your channel is the first channel I check for new videos and I watch every one. I am impressed with your abilities and you do more intensive repair work than any other farmer I know. Many farmers do the maintenance work and replace wear parts but few would tear down engines and transmissions. Sorry you get some bad comments. Thumbs up to you and your family!

Wow, looks great! Congrats on no oil leaks!!
Let everybody be jealous. You saved a tractor, put some bucks into to it, and have a pretty much rebuilt 4wd 4960 for WAY less than you could buy a used one for. Plus the satisfaction of knowing how its been treated and all the work done by you. I enjoyed seeing the progress on this. It'll look real nice once you get an interior kit into it and it's all cleaned up when you're done.

I enjoyed watching you in time lapse photography, replacing the light bar using a handle held screw driver for the delicate work. I have seen so many mechanics INSIST on using a drill driver with the torque limiter turned all the way up!
Then, when the tapped holes strip out or the small nuts break off they INSIST it is due to poor design! I appreciate watching you put the love back into this machine!
I have a guy right now, who cannot download a file, yet everyone else can. Then he provided his login credentials to a friend to login & download the same file and that was successful. But when he try's, it always fails. So he blames the hosting company!
That is about as stupid as everyone who lives on the street, can successfully drive upon it & get to where they need or want to go. But he can't with a functioning motor car. So in his mind, it is the fault of the city he cannot drive his car upon the very same street everyone else is using!
The mind numbing mentality of some of these so called engineers in these days! They are really not engineers at all!

I am new to your channel and I like how you do things. I am in Chile South America. The deep south. I am from South Carolina. I grew up on a cattle farm and I am getting back to it here in Chile where it is cheaper and freer.
I think you have the success that many people want and desire because you work with your family. I do not live to work, but I do live for my family and work is a necessity. It is a dream for many to combine both and you have done this.
My only other comment would be less cussin. I am an old submarine sailor. I battle the cussin every day. Many a time I have laid a barrage into the steer that broke through 5 strands of barbwire at 10 pm in in sleet, so I am no saint, but it would a small but better improvement. Not a demand just a suggestion.
Sure do love the tractors and the channel.

Keep up the good work and F the haters. I am not a farmer but live in Farm country, a town so big we had a senior class of 91 last year. I have a lot of respect for a man that works hard for what he has rather than those that take what they can get. My favorite thing about farm country? people who buy land build a house then go to the town and complain about the aroma from the pig farm down the road and want it closed or moved, or complain when the manure sprayers are out, or the cabbage that smells or well you get my point. I love those things it keeps the yuppies away.

Totally enjoy your videos Wes. I come from a farming background and grew up on a small family farm. I have also learned alot by watching your videos. Have you thought about getting the pump rebuilt instead of buying new? We have an awsome local rebuilder where i live. We had him rebuild a pump on a 4630 JD and it lasted another ten years before we got rid of it. Heck it might still be running. Just a thought. Keep up the great repair/maintenance videos.

Wes, I can understand your frustration on your tractor... but that's the fun part of rebuilding something, you do the work, then you realize you missed something or overlooked something or discovered something that's not notice in the original inspection... I will admit I'm jealous of you, but not for what you have (because I can tell, you earned that stuff)! I'm jealous of what you get to do... thank you for letting me tag along on your shoulder and watch as you do the different things that you do. Great videos, I hope the trolls that criticized you and your family don't piss you off to the point that you won't do this anymore. I really enjoyed the opportunity to watch you do this stuff. Thanks again for letting me ride along with you on your day of doing what ever it is your doing....

Hi, I just ran into your site around a week ago.
I to grew up on a farm that we left when I was nine so that my dad could join the Post Office 186 miles away from one farm and 75 miles from the other farm. It was the worst mistake we ever made.
I was the third generation on the farm I grew up on and the fifth generation on the other one that my great great Uncle homesteaded in Nebraska. It was the best life where I knew and loved so many people and family close by, including my grandparents, aunts and uncles cousins etc.
We had a little over 1000 acres, half of it irrigated farm land and half ranch, we also rented another 800 acres. When we moved to Lincoln Nebraska we farmed full time for two years and then leased it out for several years but we still had to maintain the place until my dad retired and sold every thing, then pissing everything away.
When I was 16 and 17 I lived at the farm by myself and irrigated for the summer while doing other chores.
It was a the best life when we lived on the farm, I only had three kids in my grade, but 4 grades in my class at school. When we moved to the city when I was nine in 1969, I went from having so many friends it was hard to see them all to almost none, and the ones I made you couldn't trust. It was the same with the rest of my family.
Like they say in the city, your surrounded by so many people but it's like being stranded in a life boat in the middle of the sea with no fresh water to drink. I have leaved all over the western US and I have never found a place that I loved like living on a farm.
Any way you stated that persons were being asses to you in comments, I use to manage low income HUD apartments for fifteen years and I have had over 6000 tenants. I use to go into apartment complexes in California and kick out all of the tenants and start over with new hopefully better ones. I must have had to evicted over 2000 people for dealing drugs, trashing the apartments, prostitution, kids tearing everything, you name it. I have seen people act in ways that I would not have thought possible several years ago.
They are correct and have proven that humans partly evolved from primates. I say partly because we have not fully evolved and we have a long ways to go.
I also ride a bicycle on doctors orders because I made myself into a diabetic. People can be very nasty and show you that they could easily run my over with there 3000 pound auto.
Thanks, you take me back to a very self sufficient live style where life is so down to earth and real.
    Bruce A R

I'm a retired biology teacher who grew up in Chicago with a father who fixed everything with tape. Lately I've been watching machine shop videos and your farm videos. You seem to be a champion fixer. Keith Rucker is a TH-cam antique museum machinist. He mentioned once that stainless steel bolts can rust up solid due to electrolytic action that happens when dissimilar metals are in contact. I have no idea if this applies to your usage, but I thought I'd mention it just in case. (Your son and daughter seem happy to have you for a dad,) I'm looking forward to the 4960 start-up. I have no doubts.

I've only just started watching your videos, but I'm loving the ' real life ' stories you do. I don't think Wes Bled the air out of the Injector lines on the original Injector Pump / Lines . After he put on the new reman Injector Pump he DID bleed the air out of the lines , and the it started . Could it be the only thing wrong with the original Injector Pump was that he FAILED to bleed the air out of the system ????

Thanks and I like your attitude. I quit farming in 1985 after the bank told me I was done. I had farmed with my own money but being young and dumb, the bank kept asking me if I wanted to buy newer equipment, then one day said I owed too much to even borrow to put the crop in. You fixing tractors with your own time and money is why you are still making it. I still have and wish more people were willing to work hard to achieve.
Thanks and please keep the video's coming!

Great heart to heart chat Wes, very well done. Just like the work you've done on your 4960, do things your way with your funds and don't let the trolls bother you.
If I lived near NJ, I would come by your farm there and shake your hand for being a straight up hard working man with values and great talents for machinery maintenance and repair.
That said, I have raised a family, now grown and gone, and the time you spend with your children is priceless. The wisdom you've shared with them and the experiences they've shared with you will be with them for the rest of their lives.
My best wishes to your sister in her situation, and thanx for all the quality videos you share with us. Hoping for your sake the injector pump is the last issue with your fine rebuild of the 4960 you have so much love for, and in closing I've got to mention the ending to part 13 of this series was absolutely stellar . I grew up on a small farm. (3 cows, a dozen chickens, half a dozen ducks). A small farm. I spent a lot of time, in my teens, helping Dad repair/maintain antiquated equipment. This was int the late 80's/early 90's and the newest piece of equipment Dad owned was his 1975 Chev one tonne. Summers were spent fixing haying equipment and putting hay up for the cows. And, of course, fence repair, hauling barrels of water to the pasture for the animals, etc. Winters were spent in the woods cutting my grandparents fire wood. I learned work ethic. I learned if you have something that needs doing, get it done now. I learned there will always be time for play, when the work is done.
I guess what I'm saying is, I don't see how you're doing your kid any harm by getting him to help you around the farm. If anything, I think he'll grow into a better man because of this, than the boy that's allowed to just sit on his ass in front of a video game all day.
But, that's just my opinion based on my own experiences.

I am 24yrs old though and still have a chance to try again and your videos help me to learn since their isn't any farmers around me to work for, so thank you for the inspirational and helpful video.

Wes, don't worry about the haters. There is enough of us that really enjoy your videos and what you do. I look forward to your videos, always check a few times a day to see if you uploaded anything. I went through withdrawl the past few days so I went back again and watched some older videos of yours. Ya it sucked not getting any new videos the last few days, but im much happier knowing that you put your career and everything aside to be there for your sister and family. Family is much more important. Thanx for the videos, keep them coming.

I love watching your videos partly because I like to see the differences between American farming and the farming where I live in Wales. It's fairly different you know, also the videos are very entertaining with your commentry and love these 4960 videos too (we usually get a mechanic out when something goes wrong with machinery, it's good to see how its done)

Haters are going to hate. You seem like a nice hard working fellow that treats his family right! I feel you are doing an awesome job at showing reality on a farm. Keep it up! Some people believe if you don't baby your kids or give them everything they want then you are not a good parent. That is a big problem with children today they expect everything to be given to them and things to go their way all the time. I'm glad to see real people doing real life! Don't let them get to you. They are obviously idiots!

While you're waiting for a pump you should take all the injectors out and compression test all the cylinders, you could have stuck rings or buildup on the valve seats. That ether should have fired no matter if it was getting fuel or not. The engine was running and stopped while hot having no time to cool down and then had a hot fire around it followed by sitting for a few years without moving so there very well could be compression issues, well worth checking before you buy a 2000 dollar pump.

Honestly you got my attention with the I hate mud video and I've been watching ever since even though I'm also a farmer ! You have inspired me to possibly purchase a project tractor 1135 massy to fix up for the field. Also I like seeing how other farmers deal with the day to day bull crap that happens on a farm and new ways to fix and handle problems so thank you for giving me my 15 minute brakes and showing me I'm not alown

I really enjoy the farming vids. I don't criticise, I more joke around then anything. I've lived in the country all my life, and love it there, not a city person at all. Enjoy what you do there on the farm. I've helped on farms, but never lived on a farm. Keep the vids coming.

Great video series, keep up the good work. The best thing about projects is you always end up knowing more than what your did before the project, I can't say I know what it's like to tear down a machine like that but right now I'm working on my first truck. It's a 1977'ford f150. It's got plenty of issues but i will be doing all the work myself.
