2:30 The time signature is in 4/4 the whole time though.

“Metre” or even “phrasing” might be a better word. I understood what he meant though. It’s how they play with the structure within 4/4 that makes it interesting to listen to. The stops, pauses, syncopation, it all blends to give this illusion of time signature complexity, but it’s all happening within 4/4.

Yeah Tim only writes in 4/4 as far as i know, but he has a unique understanding of polyrhythms.

I love this band. I'll be seeing them for the 4th time later this month in New Orleans. It's been a privilege to watch them progress over the years. They truly are musical pioneers of the modern guitar era.

Since you're already started down the Polyphia rabbit hole then you really can't go wrong with anything off their New Levels New Devils album, but my personal suggestion next would be Yas as it's another banger track off the album that sounds quite a bit different from G.O.A.T. and O.D. Past that, I'd actually work backwards through their catalog and appreciate how their music has changed over time to first hitting up songs from The Most Hated EP like Goose and 40z and eventually working back to an older hit song of theirs called Champagne. The difference from Champagne to Playing God is quite incredible IMO.

Check out blood moon, Tim’s part in the biggest shred collab and Tim Henson’s effects commercial all great examples of what he can do musically outside of polyphia as well!

I highly recommend listening to their full albums in intended order. It's a whole musical journey that carries on beyond the boundaries of the songs.

Ed, I’m not really sure, but I think you like this band.😂 OMG they are magnificent! I completely understand your attraction. Just the fact that you can get two guitarists who can play with that much gusto and prowess, and do it in perfect timing with each other, is amazing. Add to that now an insanely syncopated drummer who can impossibly mimic the speed and timing structure that the guitarists set, and it’s a really tasty treat for a music lover’s ears for sure.

You should follow Tim Henson's channel. He will literally tell you how he constructs and composes these mind blowing melodic bangers

  • @gto6254

There are no different time signatures, it's all 4/4, though sometimes it may sound like something else because they will accentuate different beats in consecutive measures, like in the second run of G.O.A.T'.'s intro riff, which Tim called a happy mistake. In that sense, Polyphia are not strictly definable as a math rock band. They are really a new genre, connecting trap beats with simple earworm melodies filled with highly technical intricacies. The underlying melody line keeps all those notes as a cohesive pleasant song, not totally unlike what Bach and Vivaldi did in classical music. Maybe we can call it Baroque Trap Metal! :) Also, Tim has a really nice explanation of how he came up with O.D. here: th-cam.com/video/MZ4QN2uFif8/w-d-xo.html

I agree with you on the genre thing. When you play like few, if any, have before, you become the new genre.

You definitely gotta check out Yas, 40oz, Goose, and Look But Don't Touch. Their New Levels New Devils and The Most Hated albums are just legendary. And believe it or not but all of their songs are actually in 4/4 time signature.

If you like metal and want to see next level musicianship and the best lead guitar duo since Priest and Maiden, one word LOVEBITES. They absolutely do it all in metal - power, thrash, progressive, and of course ballads. Their drummer (Haruna) is 4' 9" and pound for pound, the best in metal. Her stamina / pace is un-matched for her size. You will quickly see that in this song, she gets one break (during the breakdown), otherwise, straight out the entire song which is 5:56. This is just scratching the surface and if you want to talk about testing the boundaries of reinventing music (metal in this case), look no further. One of their band members is a virtuoso, you'll pick up on that easy enough if you go down this rathole.
Again, the band LOVEBITES, the song Holy War live th-cam.com/video/bgAxpEpEcno/w-d-xo.html. This is just scratching the surface; this will be reinforced by the wolfpack (LOVEBITES fan base) as they will invade your channel after reacting. Enjoy!

Clay aeschilman (probably spelled incorrectly;drummer) has playthroughs with meinl cymbals. The production quality and mixing of his video with them for this song is insane, and it really showed how great his drumming was for this song. I’m not even a drummer but I frequent that video a lot, a reaction would be great 👍🏽.
