Man I've been gone for about a month and missed so many videos. Great to see a revisit here. Going to have to binge watch what i missed before i suggest anything
For the love of GOD make sure the next Polyphia reaction you do is Nightmare or at least Euphoria. The entire Renaissance album is full of music that was made to be BEAUTIFUL as opposed to flexing how well they can shred or slap and groove.
They pretty much have never flexed by shredding since Inspire, which was also a beautiful album. And I wouldn't complain about slapping and groovin'. Renaissance is definitely their most beautiful album, but NLND is funky and groovy af and I love it.
@@chrisvalenzuela7911 i wasnt saying its bad. I absolutely love NLND. But majority of the songs on the record are very simple in structure and a little lackluster compared to some moments in other records
In a band that is so focused on the guitar, the drums are my favorite part. It makes the music they play just so much more complete and unique compared to others. The drummer is the driving force behind this band, no doubt.
I think with Polyphia you need to think in more of a verse/chorus structure (with a section thrown in some times for both guitarists to take a lead.) I would really recommend... honestly all of their albums. Mainly due to how different they took their sound, which helps newer listeners find something they can really latch on too. Between their earlier, more distorted/proggy pop esque albums such as Muse and Renaissance, and their more recent work such as the The Most Hated e.p and latest New Levels New Devils album, (which carry a cleaner, yet somehow equally punchy guitar tone, more of a modern hip hop groove/vibe and perfectly distorted bass tone to bring it all together (as you might have found or noticed from listening to O.D. AND G.O.A.T. off of the NLND album) If you haven't already, it would be really cool to get a reaction to the song Goose. It's from the TMH e.p which, personally i still can't grasp guitar wise. I believe Tim Henson has a 'how to make a riff' video of him playing an insane section from the song which you might also enjoy. :) great video, i've subbed and will be watching through your backlog tonight. Glad i found your channel!
I’d agree with what another individual said before- for other more melody driven Polyphia songs, I’d go for Yas, or Rich Kidz. The videos are great and Informative that you are doing, please keep me coming! :)
The structure of this song was based ona Taylor Swift song. GOAT can be read as Greatest Of All Time. I feel that the really steep climb that is 'GOAT,' almost like free jazz, asks the listener to step out of their comfort zone consistently. It is a composition of the GOAT, that is the story.
@@kwlks6 I didn't say that GOAT was free jazz. I only compared it to free jazz... I do feel like this song can be a steep climb that is hard to listen to for some like a lot of free form jazz.}
Hey Brian - how about some Persefone? Mind as Universe or Prison Skin would be my picks but they’ve got lots of great music. Great work on the channel!
The "muted" technique you're referring to is called sweep picking. It's when you pick every note of an arpeggio in quick succession across the strings.
he's playing arpeggios but hates just going up and down the scale so he does funky shit like that main riff that repeats. he has a video about how he wrote OD and GOAT actually
I'm amazed you haven't touched on Issues yet. They have a similar vibe, but more hook based with a more modern nu metal sound when distortion is present about half the time for nearly all of their songs. They have a lead singer on the more R&B and pop side of the scale. I can't get most of their songs out of my head. Something about the guitar and vocal hooks just get me for nearly every track! Unsure if you'd be into them or not, but their new album is one of the best produced albums I've heard in a long time.
My first time hearing this song as well. I like the riffs in this song, they're really fun, but the song ended too quickly. The song ended before it hit it's full potential. So, while it is structured better than GOAT, it's still not leaving me with as much satisfaction as I think this song could have.
Listed to zeal and ardor, it like blues mixed with black metal, ship on fire, devil is fine, blood in the river and gravediggers chant are fantastic songs.
Honestly, their older material is WAY more melodic. Like there's actual guitar hooks that you can sing. The stuff before Renaissance is basically modern melodic shred. I think you would really appreciate stuff like "Finale" "Champagne" "Sweet Tea" That era of Polyphia is by far my favorite. Their modern music is really entertaining but it's very polished and "trappy" in its production. TL;DR: Look at their earliest material. Much more classically influenced.
Interestingly, I don't mind the hip-hop/trap influences. I actually think they sound great when merged with the complexity of their playing. I plan on getting around to their older stuff eventually but if I enjoy it more then I'll definitely wish that they merged their two styles into a single, superior style.
@@CriticalReactions That merge is actually what I wish for....they kinda DO hit that vibe on the "Renaissance" album. I think you'll really enjoy that era of their playing. It's very, very "Classy" sounding.
Telegraph both guitar and bass parts of G.O.A.T. into standard notation, and look at the composition. The guitars beautifully alternate between higher and lower positions, and the bassist fills dangerous holes between the guitars flawlessly without overpowering in a track that is extremely tight. All the while this drummer is teasing fulls and killing the high hats in pockets that I dont think many others could keep time with. None of us are writing tracks like this, so for one of us to criticize their composition is a bit sus. Sorry for the rant but I got very irritated when you said that. xD
I totally understand where you're coming from with G.O.A.T, but I think that was the whole point. It still jams like hell, but O.D and 40oz are top contenders for my favorite Polyphia songs

I agree with you Bryan. I personally put a lot of effort into arrangement because I think it can make or break a song. Dynamics being a top priority, as well as melody. Riffs and silence to complete it, and the whole song telling a story and/or communicate feeling and passion.
I heard in your ludens you mentioned it sounding like Skrillex with a rock vibe. In that case you should check out make war by from first to last. Its a track from Skrillex's emo/post-hardcore band. GOAT was great the first several times, but after awhile I just wanna hear their older songs. So much better and the musicianship is much deeper. All the new stuff is very similar and bland
Tony Mioni for me it’s the exact opposite, all of their old stuff feels too similar and I get tired of it very easily. I think it’s just cause of how similar the melodies can sound. I do agree that their new stuff is all similar to each other, but it’s personally easier for me to get into and listen over and over than their previous albums. For me it’s just been more if an escape and fresh start more than anything from their previous work.
A singer would help but I don't think a singer specifically is the key. There just needs to be some form of theme or connection between all of the riffs. A singer would definitely do that (and more people would connect with it since most humans understand speech better than music) but also a "lead" guitar line that doesn't play riffs would do it as well. Think of it as playing 2 or 3 one minute solos here. So a solo over the beginning riffs, then the melodic middle section, then a solo over the outro. The outro melody/solo could even incorporate some familiar lines or ideas from the intro melody/solo to apply a bit of music theme to the track. Simply having an instrument tell a story over the sick playing would help a lot I think.
@@CriticalReactions I don't think you should have a conclusion about a band after just listened to 2 songs from them. Musicians grows, they explore other sounds and techniques. How about you check Polyphia's works from Muse and Renaissance era?
@@CriticalReactions btw about collaboration. They have featured Mateus Asato, Jason Richardson, Ichika Nito, Yvette Young from Covet, Mario Camarena and Eric Hansel from Chon. If u want vocal, they have featured Cuco
I know I don't specifically mention it in the video -- it would be a bit tedious to do it every time -- but I only make conclusions about what I've heard. I totally understand that bands cannot be summed up in a single song, even if they only have a single album out. But you mentioned Yvette Young and now I need to find this collab.
As the band has progressed they have moved away from the super melodic into more rhythmic based compositions. If you want technical rhythms, it’s their new stuff especially off New Levels New Devils. If you want the melodies with more structure you want to listen to stuff from either their Renaissance or Muse albums.
Animals as leaders ,a trio from Washington DC. 2 eight string guitarists(Javier Reyes&Tosin Abasi) highly respected, masterful and equal in their own right. as well as their drummer MATT GARSTKA.(the best in the game.imo) I would suggest a song from each album.although their debut record(selftitled) was programmed drums(I know I know, but by Misha Mansoor of PERIPHERY who also cowrote/produced the record)they did have a live drummer play it and he actually wrote the second album(WEIGHTLESS) with them.his name is NAVENE KOPERWISE(now of ENTHEOS). The following albums (joy of motion / madness of many) was with Matt. every record is different and more and more melodic the more relevant you get.not only technical/shredy but musical/emotional and moving....ok enough of me fanboying out...geez.

React to YAS. Every complaint you have with GOAT will be resolved :D
Aye, I love that I saw my name here, and my recommendation!
Please do another reaction on Drown by Polyphia
Check out Reptile by Periphery!

I would of suggested EUPHORIA ....but you want boss level guitar playing...you NEED to check out ANIMALS AS LEADERS
The following albums (joy of motion / madness of many) was with Matt. every record is different and more and more melodic the more relevant you get.not only technical/shredy but musical/emotional and moving....ok enough of me fanboying out...geez.
didn't know that Joaquin Phoenix did music reviews
As far a as Polyphia goes, their best is called "Finale"
