Paul Kelly has an knack of taking other people's circumstances and placing himself right in there. But he does it with sympathy and respect. 😊❤ Love this man like a brother. 😊
I'm Aussie and this video made me subscribe! Paul Kelly was one of my dad's favourite Aussie artists when I was growing up and we used to play this all the time around Christmas time. I'd also recommend “From St. Kilda To King's Cross”, “From Little Things Big Things Grow” and “To Her Door”. They're all legendary Paul Kelly songs!!
Hi Mike, an Aussie here in Belgium. Like what you are doing and your honest assessment of our songs. Missing home after listening to Paul Kelly and Cold Chisel.
How to Make Gravy is a unique Australian song always played on December 21st on all the radio stations. It is unique in thet it doesn't have a chorus. December 21st is called "Gravy Day". It recognizes loved ones no matter where they are at Christmastime. It tells the story of a newly imprisoned man writing a letter to his brother, in which the prisoner laments that he will be missing the family's Christmas celebrations. The same character appears in two of Kelly's earlier songs, "To Her Door" (1987) and "Love Never Runs on Time" (1994). The gravy recipe is genuine - Kelly learnt it from his first father-in-law.
Mr Son of Buck, do not leave the Aussie 'Rabbit Hole". You have barely scratched the surface of amazing Australian music, most of which stayed on-shore and the U.S missed out on. Stay on the path and Aussies and Kiwis will continue to flock to your channel. Keep up the 'Aussie' work mate.
This is an Australian Christmas song. It is about missing your loved ones at a special time. You need to check out the COVID version, which brings to life how important this song is to Australians, especially when separated from home and their loved ones.
It is such an Aussie thing to be brutally honest with our songs and this is a prime example. Another great Aussie Christmas Song is Drinking White Wine In The Sun by Tim Minchin.
I tear up a little when I hear this, sung by Paul Kelly. His voice and delivery is so good. And the cast of characters in this song- there’s a whole world there. I hope he got out in July,, and got his life together again!
Cracker of a tune. Embodies Xmas in Australia. I have two daughters, one lives in NZ and the other in Singapore. The song hits home. Thanks for checking it out Mick. Have a ripper of a day!! Cheers Gordo
Always gives me goosebumps. As a LE officer maybe you’ll relate to this on your own special level too- it’s a funny kind of a theme for a Christmas song but that’s us Aussies - we’re a funny little bunch and this one stirs our emotions! ❤
7:26 You hit the nail on the head. He “really screwed up this time”, we don’t know what he did or why, but he owns that it was his fault. I’ve always figured it couldn’t be too violent or severe as this is his first Christmas inside and he should be out by July. It’s a letter to his brother.
Great insight - Paul Kelly has a well-documented history with heroin in his younger years, so I wouldn't be surprised if he knew people who were inside for a short time for drugs or petty theft
Hey mate, nice job. Thanks for fussing a bit over us Aussies with a few song reactions, but I also hope your channel expands and you get some bigger demographics 😅 This is a special song to me, we play it at Christmas and think about people who can't be with us. And like you said I know plenty of people deserve to be in prison but there's a time and a place for everything and Christmas is a good time to think about another angle - redemption and forgiveness, the human side. We are all sinners, and Christmas is the birthday of our saviour and the one who pays for our sins and gives us a clean slate. When you listen to this song you can't help but hope this guy gets out in July and starts a new, happy life on the straight and narrow. I like that this song is a more honest and raw Christmas song than some of the other, merrier ones. It's not pretending we're all perfect or that Christmas is the time to project some fake image. Lots of movies, songs, books etc touch on the subject of "the real" meaning of Christmas, the spirit of Christmas, and this song gets me thinking about that.
Brilliant song, PK is a great story teller and musician. His voice is perfect for his songs, makes them feel authentic. And this song even includes a great recipe!! Great insight into your work and compassion for and understanding of people in prison still being human and not necessarily bad or dangerous people!
A master storyteller. Dont be afraid to jump down the Paul Kelly rabbit-hole. A wonderful world of music & stories await. If you can find the special '2021 Version' of this songs video clip it might even melt the heart of a Texas cop! Do it.
Another awesome singer from Australia is Kasey Chambers, Kasey has been singing since the age of 10 and is the youngest person to be inducted into the ARIA hall of fame. Her cover of Eminems "Lose Yourself " is a MUST listen to
Thank you for your service Sir. I'm a 911 Dispatcher today and I was the little girl at home on Christmas Day almost every year. It hurt so much. God Bless Them All. ❤ Please stay safe and keep your head on swivel. Much love and respect.
This song gained a resurgence during COVID lockdowns with another video of it. Just as you pointed out being deployed while in the service. Thanks for your reaction. If you get a chance in the rabbit hole check out Oe Camelleri and his 2 bands Black Sorrows and Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons.
My husband was listening to a paul kelly song when a semi trailer breached a massive medium strip from the other direction on the highway & hit his second trailer & it exploded, he was driving a B double, the semi guy had a heart attack, so everytime I hear paul kelly it reminds me of my husband's accident 👍🇦🇺
That song always get me in the feels. I don't mind saying I got misty listening to it. If you follow the lyrics it starts out clear headed, but eventually he loses it and says stuff he shouldn't say about somebody might get to dancing too close to his wife Rita and he's worried about that.
Love this song. You are correct in that there is not any chorus, so it's not structured like a regular song. It is written like a letter sent home from the prisoner to his brother. 21st December is Gravy Day.
You’ve got a new subscriber - your reactions are so honest. Just a couple of things, 21st December is now known as Gravy day here in Oz. If you want to see a great video version of the same song check out the 2021 version. It was filmed during the long Covid lockdowns where a lot of us hadn’t and couldn’t see our families - it features self submitted videos of Paul Kelly fans. Sure to draw a 😢. On the same kind of theme try “White wine in the Sun” by Tim Minchin. One of the best Aussie Christmas songs other than Gravy. Just remember Christmas in Oz is in the summer. 😀
Deep Cuts Reactions also reacted to this Paul Kelly song but it was a better (inside) version. Aussies love this song and play it around Christmas and especially on the 21st of December which is 'Making Gravy Day.' Paul Kelly has had a number of groups over the years and did some great work Vika and Linda Bull who are fabulous singers. All are in my home city of Melbourne where JOHN FARNHAM also comes from. I'm still waiting for reactions to John. Aussies always fly to the magical honeypot of John Farnham. His talent, musical career, fame and concerts were enormous !
Yeah definitely check out Vika and Linda with Joe Camilleri in the Black Sorrows singing "Never Let Me Go" : th-cam.com/video/j_ejDoJ5Kns/w-d-xo.html. I think you'll love it.
Paul Kelly fan here, he’s great live, and what a song writer. This was filmed n a rooftop in St Kilda, looks like a suburb of Melbourne. Xmas is hot in Oz. See the tinsel on the drum kit and the hills hoist ( Aussie clothes line) for a nod to xma😂s decorations. Paul was asked to contribute to a Xmas album, this is what he came up with .
Paul Kelly is a wonderful storyteller first and foremost... You never need to apologize for stopping and talking... We've all heard these songs a thousand times... We're here for your humanity and genuineness in your reactions to the most treasured cultural icons we've all grown up with... Subscribed!
Paul Kelly such a good songwriter and storyteller. My favourite Paul Kellly song is 'Dumb Things'....I also think 'From Little Things, Big Things Grow' is a very important song for telling the story of birth Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Land rights in Australia.
Good call on the meaning of the song, you pretty much nailed it. Paul Kelly is Australia's storyteller, almost all of his songs have a deep story behind the lyrics and require a few listens to get the point. Another ultra-Australian Christmas song (my favourite) is “White Wine in the Sun” by Tim Minchin. The singer/songwriter comes from a suburb very near mine and the image he creates brings back memories of so many beautiful Christmasses
A cop who can empathize within reason is what society needs mate😊yeah Paul Kelly sure can write and sing. Can i please suggest,Droving Woman (i think Kev Carmody wrote it) featuring Paul Kelly, his son Dan Kelly, and Missy Higgins, who is an incredible Australian singer songwriter. A drover used to be similar to an olden day cow hand i would say. They would sit on a horse all day slowly moving cattle and sheep along as they grazed. I think you'll enjoy. It wasn't a hard sub mate. Best wishes from Qld Australia 😊
Australians love the underdog, the battler, the little guy. And a lot of our popular music reflects that. Even Waltzing Matilda our unofficial national anthem is about a seasonal worker, a transient down on his luck who steals some jumbucks. Because we are all capable of messing up and going off the rails and we all hope to be giving the chance at redemption. I recommend The Models-The Easybeats- The Go betweens- Crowded house- The Angels- Custard as good down under bands to listen to. Love the channel!
On the 21st of December I wish all my friends Happy Gravy Day and I mean it, this song means so much. Watch the covid version and you will cry with Aussies all around sending in videos of them singing this song to the people they love and miss
This song has been out for 30 odd years. If you get a chance, watch the 2021 version filmed during covid when people were stuck interstate and overseas and couldn't be together at Christmas. It will make you cry.
Hey, enjoying the channel. I've also just subscribed. You have a lot of Aussies and Kiwi's tuning in for a number of reasons. Essentially we love sharing the unbelievable musical talent we have with the world. Many artists are world class but for whatever reason haven't made it big elsewhere. Some weren't prepared to move somewhere like the States and start all over again, others were screwed by American record companies like Cold Chisel (when the A & R guy at the U.S label can't come to your L.A showcase because he's holding a birthday party for his dog, you know they aren't going to help you break in to the market). We love seeing reactions to our wonderful artists. I'm delighted you are exploring Paul Kelly. Yes he's a story teller. Can I please suggest you react to his song "Everything's Turning to White". Be prepared for a very confronting story and amazing lyrics written from a female's perspective. A sombre tale, but brilliantly told.
Great observations man and the world needs more cops like you. Saw some people suggesting Kasey Chambers....as we say in Australia "do yourself a favour" and check out her cover of Eminem's Lose Yourself. Utterly mind blowing! Probably the best cover of any song ever imho
Australians in the past used to have a problem with Alcohol and Violence. Especially the poor side of town. Many incarcerated for fights, domestic fights and disruptive behaviour while under the influence of alcohol. I have far too many stories that go down that path since i grew up in the darker side of town. We didn't have to worry about gangs and all that crap. They didn't really exist. It was more having to watch ones mouth around everyone, because if you mouthed off to Mr. and Mrs. Quarry on the other side of town, you knew she would be phoning your parents to complain and your father would be waiting for you to get in the door before he really does beat you to an inch of your life. That gave way to drinking issues and more violence. Everyone knew everyone. I grew up going to school and several kids had black eyes, split lips and were covered head to toe in black green bruises. Thankfully that doesnt happen anymore.
Would love to know what you think of A.B.Original featuring Paul Kelly (and Dan Sultan) "Wild Things" from a Triple J video. The lyrics are hard hitting on a different level. Personally, I find Paul Kelly just as impactful live as recorded. I went to his concert earlier this year and this song is one of my favourites, me and my sister holding hands while singing all the words, remembering every Christmas in the kitchen while making gravy. Brings tears to my eyes always.
If you liked that one. Kev Carmody - Droving Woman is a song you like. The of it done with Paul Kelly, Missy Higgins and Glen Richards is pretty fantastic.
PLEASE - you need to watch the 2021 version, made in the height of covid where people all over the world posted video singing to this when they couldn't get home for Christmas. Also people who have lost loved ones, it's an amazing video. You are ver observant to notice also that this song does not have a chorus - it's very clever. Warner Bros. bought the rights to the song and are releasing am movie this Dec called " How to make gravy " ... get ready to review on 21st DECEMBER!!!1 YOU HAVE TO! :)
Another great story/song he does is called "Everything's turning to white." It's a story told from a woman's perspective and is really quite touching. Another song he wrote but is sung by another Australian legend, Vicka Bull, is "My man's got a cold." It's hilarious and well worth a look.
Paul Kelly is Australia’s poet laureate. Gravy Day is incredibly emotional for all Aussies. We remember our loved ones who aren’t with us.
People who know the lyrics call the 21st of December Gravy Day in Oz
one of the only songs that makes me lement my life now im 60 , i am an australian , i am tearful for a life past
I wish people happy gravy day. Very few people don’t know what I mean.
Yes! I concur
It’s almost like festivus for the rest of us…lol
will be soon mate
Paul Kelly has an knack of taking other people's circumstances and placing himself right in there. But he does it with sympathy and respect. 😊❤ Love this man like a brother. 😊
Paul Kelly is one of the most profound song writers of our time
1996 this song, the radio, on Triple M Melbourne... What a big hit !!!🤠🪃
Paul Kelly is a legend.. another of his good songs is “to her door” he also does a huge amount of work with indigenous Australians
"To Her Door" and "Gravy" are about the same man. So is "Love Never Runs On Time". Paul explains it in his autobiography.

Absolutely ✌️ ❤

No chorus, written for a charity Christmas album and simply brilliant.
Nailed it! Imprisonment is just his metaphor for talking about people that can’t be there with their families at Christmas
I tear up a little when I hear this, sung by Paul Kelly. His voice and delivery is so good. And the cast of characters in this song- there’s a whole world there. I hope he got out in July,, and got his life together again!
This is another sad song... Thank you from Australia again
Cracker of a tune. Embodies Xmas in Australia. I have two daughters, one lives in NZ and the other in Singapore. The song hits home. Thanks for checking it out Mick. Have a ripper of a day!!

Brings tears everytime I hear it. Classic Aussie song. The surprising thing is that I’m not a fan of Paul Kelly other than this song.
I've viewed hundreds of reaction videos and never subscribed. You've got true heart. That's why Aussies are here. ❤
Thanks brother, nice of you.

Thank you. Yeah, I'm looking forward to spending this Christmas at home with my family. Thanks for your service too ma'am
Just subscribed. Great to see you reacting to our beautiful music. ❤
The song is becoming a movie this year! Can't wait!
Good reaction mate . 21st December is known as Gravy day here in oz .

Enjoyed this song! It's certainly unique for a Christmas song. Paul Kelly is brilliant!
Paul Kelly, for me, is Australia's version of Bob Dylan...more poet than just a musician.
My thoughts too. A true musical poet. Not the greatest singer, but presents his music perfectly.
This is my family's Xmas song.. Paul Kelly.. Australians Bob Dylan! ✌️
The strange thing is, this is Paul Kelly's Christmas song and is very popular at that time of year.
My husband was listening to a paul kelly song when a semi trailer breached a massive medium strip from the other direction on the highway & hit his second trailer & it exploded, he was driving a B double, the semi guy had a heart attack, so everytime I hear paul kelly it reminds me of my husband's accident 👍🇦🇺
wow. Yeah its dangerous and a tough job our Truck driver's have
I vote for Kasey and Lose Yourself as well. A true Aussie lady legend. Also Ain’t no little girl.
Lose Yourself is brilliant.
That song always get me in the feels. I don't mind saying I got misty listening to it. If you follow the lyrics it starts out clear headed, but eventually he loses it and says stuff he shouldn't say about somebody might get to dancing too close to his wife Rita and he's worried about that.
the COVID version video is brilliant - also, you want a christmas song, Tim Minchin - White Wine in the Sun
Love this song. You are correct in that there is not any chorus, so it's not structured like a regular song. It is written like a letter sent home from the prisoner to his brother.
21st December is Gravy Day.
God bless America.
God defend New Zealand.
Thank God for Australia 🇦🇺.
A legend. His son Dan makes some good music too.
Dan is Paul's nephew, not son.

Always makes me shed a little tear.
G’day mate, welcome to our Aussie music. Love the channel mate
Best song ever ❤️
That Song chokes me up every time

Hi from Australia. I just found your channel and I have enjoyed it so much that I binged 5 hours worth.
Glad you enjoy it! But please don't burn yourself out..lol
Welcome to Australian music, No need to go anywhere else weve got it all
Paul Kelly fan here, he’s great live, and what a song writer.
I love this song. The other video made during Covid lockdown is heart wrenching.
It’s an Aussie Christmas carol! Aussie girl and new subscriber xo
Im loving that my grandchildren are listening to Paul Kelly...great review. Many thanks!
Thank you for your service sir , from another ex serviceman 🇦🇺 from Aus, I suggest you try “ Jindabyne “ next time
Good call on the meaning of the song, you pretty much nailed it. Paul Kelly is Australia's storyteller, almost all of his songs have a deep story behind the lyrics and require a few listens to get the point. One that isn't so deep, but is one of my faves is "Dumb Things", it's a bit more upbeat and was used on the soundtrack of Young Einstein, a quirky Aussie comedy flick....
I feel you would enjoy ‘I still pray’ by Kasey chambers and Paul Kelly. ❤🌿🇳🇿
G'day Aussie here, I subscribed yesterday, have a great day 👍🇦🇺
Welcome aboard!
Awesome that you’ve tripped down the Australian rabbit hole Buck. Have a listen to “Before Too Long” by Paul Kelly. It’s a song about a stalker and enjoy Steve Connelly’s sublime guitar solo.
One more from left field is Bernie Hayes try “South Perth”. Beautiful tune about missing someone.
Another ultra-Australian Christmas song (my favourite) is “White Wine in the Sun” by Tim Minchin. The singer/songwriter comes from a suburb very near mine and the image he creates brings back memories of so many beautiful Christmasses

One of my personal favourites 🐣
Australians love the underdog, the battler, the little guy. And a lot of our popular music reflects that. Even Waltzing Matilda our unofficial national anthem is about a seasonal worker, a transient down on his luck who steals some jumbucks. Because we are all capable of messing up and going off the rails and we all hope to be giving the chance at redemption. I recommend The Models-The Easybeats- The Go betweens- Crowded house- The Angels- Custard as good down under bands to listen to. Love the channel!
Graeme Conners is another great Australian Storyteller. Check out his song The Ringer and The Princess.
On the 21st of December I wish all my friends Happy Gravy Day and I mean it, this song means so much. Watch the covid version and you will cry with Aussies all around sending in videos of them singing this song to the people they love and miss
Agree! It cuts a bit deeper with all those who were stuck overseas due to lockdowns and couldn't get home to spend Christmas with their loved ones.
This song has been out for 30 odd years. If you get a chance, watch the 2021 version filmed during covid when people were stuck interstate and overseas and couldn't be together at Christmas.
It will make you cry.
Check the lockdown version. Touching watching all sorts of people who can't be with loved ones for whatever reason.

I enjoy your sincere reactions. Subbed
Great observations man and the world needs more cops like you. Saw some people suggesting Kasey Chambers....as we say in Australia "do yourself a favour" and check out her cover of Eminem's Lose Yourself. Utterly mind blowing! Probably the best cover of any song ever imho
A christmas classic if you want try careless or dumb things ,oh hell any of Paul's songs are great ! Also have a listen to deeper water
I grew up going to school and several kids had black eyes, split lips and were covered head to toe in black green bruises.
Thankfully that doesnt happen anymore.
Another great performer from Australia is Marcia Hines. Try listening to her song "You."
Would love to know what you think of A.B.Original featuring Paul Kelly (and Dan Sultan) "Wild Things" from a Triple J video. The lyrics are hard hitting on a different level.

Kev Carmody - Droving Woman is a song you like.
The of it done with Paul Kelly, Missy Higgins and Glen Richards is pretty fantastic.
Play it every 21st of December in Australia 🇦🇺
Couple of days!
To feel the true power of the lyrics you need to watch the covid version
Love your channel, you’ll have to react to the Covid version, it will bring the feels for sure.
Hey mate, I've subbed. I'm a good boy.
Ash Naylor on guitar
21st December every Year. Gravy Day !
Two great aussie Christmas songs, paul kelly how to make gravy and Tim Minchin's White wine in the sun.
My top 2 songwriters are 1. Paul Simon and 2. Paul Kelly.
This song had a resurgence during covid christmas
I can't find the subscribe button otherwise I would most certainly press it😂
I reckon you are a really good cop mate, just from the way you talk. Thanks for that!
It's a pretty deep song when you dive in. He's a great song writer
Good on ya mate👍
Thanks 👍
See a lot of people are recommending Kasey Chambers here. She with Paul Kelly have a great song called "When we are both mad and old". Worth a listen
How's that sun for the 21st of December?? hehe
Not a chorus at all . Well spotted Mike . You're getting good at this . The good road you are laying is attracting a lot of us Aussies. Well done Mike
It’s Dec 21 👍
New subscriber from Australia here. Like your reactions. Can you please do John Fareham "Help" with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra? Thank you.
