I liked crown of the kobold king (1e and 2e... after I blotted out the paragraph explaining why a halfling mayor wants dwarf dick in his ass, like I need to know about some freak's scatt fetish!) what did I find interesting about the 2e revision? yeah, there was an evil necromancer... but he wasn't the center of the plot. A breaking/failing seal is and it unleashed enough Necro energy to animate every corpse for almost a 100 mile radius! Yes, I made my players wade through thousands of skeleton variants, thousands of Zombie variants, Ghosts, Ghouls, a band of werewolf brigands, I brought back that diabolical little girl from 1e into the 2e adventure as a Solo BOSS. I had a dhampir in town who was commanding wolves to attack local area farmers, and a local druid wanted this unknown foe stopped, but he couldn't leave his circle or enter the town of falcon's hollow. Once the party defeated the dhampir, he came back later as a True VAMPIRE running the local orphanage in town... the little orphans were all his "Spawn"! with "Milestone XP" I kept my players on their toes for hundreds of encounters. "oh skeletons again?" got met with, "okay, these are infectious undead or they stink so bad or these are curse bearers or their "I've been beyond death's veil" gaze can drive you mad, or That one's shield is made of rust monster shell, or these have burrowing 10ft their tactic is to grapple with you and drag you down into the ground! the Grave. to hell. etc. it's not quicksand, but it's every bit as gruesome a fate to imagine.
I love Skeletons! 🎉
