I was thrilled when you said you were going to do it the way you thought was best. We are watching to see how you cope with the mystery pattern and how you deal with the confusion. One day the pedantic few will be able to watch an AI robot do the pattern and they will be happy. Until then I suggest they stop watching and/or commenting. The rest of us will enjoy the offering as it is.
Let’s face it. Housewives of the 1890s who could read probably took a few creative liberties themselves. The important thing is sticking as close as reasonably possible to the original intent of the design. I mean come on, are we going to apply leeches to treat fever or simply pop a Tylenol.
There was so much assumed knowledge in most of these patterns that I think the others who made this ABSOLUTELY would have used a stacked single if it were common practice. Why not learn from the years of experience of others?
My grandmother could read, but until she had mastered reading, she was shown stitches as a child and encouraged to make useful items for sale. She crocheted fine work... Irish crochet. Mainly collars, cuffs, gloves, trimming for bed linen, towels, tablecloths napkins handkerchiefs etc.. Very fine crochet hooks, leather protector for index finger re fine thread and sharp small hooks. Many of her stitches patterns etc were committed to memory, she could read a little but if you gave her a sample or piece of work... She could read the sample and reproduce or even repair the item. She also did this with knitting. My mum encouraged her to tell how she did a pattern and mum recorded it. I have samples of her borders, open work, motifs etc.... Even a some knitting. The baby shawl Christine pattern is fantastic. 1 ply, cast on one and at each row make one at the beginning when you get to the req. No of stitches you start to decrease in the same manner... You have a garter stitch 'diamond... The rest consists simply of picking up stitches on a side, couple of foundation rows, a row of holes for a ribbon if desired then feather and fan stich which you are supposed to know how it's done... Sew up, work a 16 stitch border around the outside....
I love stacked single stitches instead of Chains , looks cleaner and Joines better , I don't chain 3 anymore at all , this is beautiful !! Especially the Border , can b used on so many projects !! ❤ It !! Thank You so much for another great video 📷📷 !!
1890 was a good year. My Gramma was born that year. She showed me how to do a yarn over, and answered any question I had about crochet. While working on the first project, I sat on the G’ma & G’pa’s back porch bench.
I'm grateful for this channel... especially since there's no music. I enjoy listening to you, music isn't necessary 😊... you are the reason I'm here! Also, it's your channel you do you. Others matter to you to grow your channel, but you'll grow without those that fight you or with them fighting all the way. You are talented 😁
Yeah!! Kept telling my screen please do you! Enjoy the process! If someone anyone wants to be a stickler for perfection on following the pattern, they should consider starting their own channel. Yes the channel is ‘just vintage crochet’, but we should also give you grace as to run your channel. At least I don’t know what all goes into doing this but it is more than I think… I am here to join you in this exploration of vintage patterns. I want you to enjoy as much as I do! Please keep been you! Adjust as much of the patterns as you feel you need to ;)
You know, crochet has come a long way from the 1800's. You have learned what looks better from your own personal experiences. I think we all benefit from your knowledge. I cannot follow a pattern, hardly ever, and I'm learning from you. Thank you!
*)*Monarch Andalusian* (1930s) was a soft wool yarn. It was 4-ply and sold in 1 oz balls (1934). It was suitable for Infant and childrens garments, including carriage covers. Correct weight for Pullovers, Ladies Hats, Scarves and Berets.
Haven't finished watching yet, so you might still get it yourself, too, but the reason they are starting each round between the first and second Treble is that they do not count the starting chain as a real treble, so the centre of the cluster is actually between the first and second true treble stitch; hope that makes sense...
Whee! I love this! As I understand it, at the beginning of round 2, the pattern is not naming that beginning chain up as a treble (because you are chaining), therefore, it says "...first and second trebles..." when it means to put the group of 4 in the middle (between the second and third trebles). You correctly placed this shell in the middle, i.e. between the "second" and third. This obviously predates the familiar, conventional obligatory phrases, "...chain x number of chains..." followed by "...chain group counts as first whatever stitch in this and all following rows..." or words to that effect. Thank you so much!
I like hearing how you puzzle the directions, question, then redirect yourself to get back on track. This helps me, as a beginner, to slow down, and break down the directions into meaningful steps.
Don’t listen to the haters. I would probably do a stacked stitch to start as I don’t like starting with a long chain, either. You do beautiful work ❤️🧶
I think they said between first and second long trebles because they are not considering the starting chain to be a long treble. So that would indeed put you starting in the center of the group. Pronunciation of Andalusian: and illusion I absolutely love your channel! I have to admit I am one of those people that yells at the screen translating the pattern into modern terms; not that anyone but my cats hear me. LOL. It doesn’t matter if it’s a tutorial or a mystery pattern, I watch all your videos! I even love the flipping-n-picking videos. And when it comes to putting your preferred methods into the patterns, you do you! If you want to work a stacked single, do it. Thank you for introducing me to vintage patterns.
Oh my gosh, I love this one! I like your stacked singles, it does look tidier for sure. So many shawl patterns, which one should I make? 😯 Corinna, I will definitely be joining your new channel! I like you and I want to hang out with you, sounds like a blast! 😁
Thank you for a great tutorial this was a blast to make I'm definitely making this one again. I used caron cotton funnel cakes and a 5mm hook has a nice drape and so soft.
7:15 I believe the pattern was saying the first true treble and second treble (where you placed it) vs between the chain and the first treble stitch! That’s how I interpreted it Also love you working this how you want to! We know the people 133 years ago were doing their favorite methods and shortcuts going off pattern so why can’t you
Way to go, Corinna! Keep those mystery patterns coming, I really enjoy watching them unfold as you follow the hard to understand directions! Also, please thank your son for all of his hard work that allows us to have so much fun! 😊❤ Jesus loves you ❤ Helen
As a self taught crocheter that i have been since i was a child ( 63 years old now), and i could never understand those crochet patterns, now that I saw your channel and see how you read the old patterns and try to understand them I now Am open maybe to try to do something following one simple pattern. Maybe. I am a free spirit and do my own things so it is going to be hard for me to stick to do something different. Also my mother tongue is Spanish, so is a challenge. You explain so well and you are so easy to understand , thanks.
So pretty, adding it to my ever growing list of inspo i get from your channel so far, I've made the snood and the opera bag. Thank you for all the videos.
The shawl is very pretty and delicate. It's interesting that the shawls were made in a square and then folded into a rectangle, rather than working from one corner up. I guess those two layers of work were warmer to wear. 🙂
I like when you go off script a bit because I learn new stitches when you do that, or new ways of doing otherwise pretty basic stitches. I don't really know why people would be mad about it, though. They could just make one themselves, following along with you. You're always pretty clear about when you're doing something different from what the pattern actually calls for and telling us what it is the pattern originally wanted you to do. In fact, that would be really fun to compare your version to the viewers' versions, especially those who didn't make any alterations to the pattern. 9.5/10 times, I bet they're so similar that someone just looking wouldn't be able to tell them apart anyway unless it was something like a color choice that was the only deviation from the pattern.
I give little blankets/sample-sized stuff to my doggie. I cover him up on the couch when he is sleeping and then put them up when he’s not napping so he can’t chew them. It’s never fun when the strings come out the other end. 😂
I think it says "between the first and second" treble stitches because the first "stitch" of the group is your starting chain (or stacked stitches - stick to your guns, girl!). That way "between the first and second" is actually in the middle of the group. This is a gorgeous pattern!
Hell yes Corinna, we love to see you do what you want! 😍I don't understand these "omg you went off pattern" people at all. I think they need to touch grass. 🤷
Don't get mad, but I'm working on granny squares while listening to you. I am trying to finish some blankets for some the family members who didn't get any last year.
Every crochet person with some experience will develop a personal style. That doesn't take anything away from the mystery pattern as a whole. So just use your style and let the few negative voices yell in the void. 😉
Oh this is lovely. I wasn't totally sold on this stitch for a shawl initially but when I saw your fluffy brushed version, it won me over completely. I love the other one now it has the edging too!
32:29 the repeat starts with the 4 chain and dc, so all but the last long treble should have a picot, for a total of 5 picots. 42:42 with 5 picots you would be able to do it 4 times
When I was 16 years old, my mum picked up an extremely rare virus which left her paralysed in her right arm. Long story short part of her rehabilitation was learning to crochet. The first thing she made was a shawl for 52:45 to wear with the dress I had made to wear to a party. I still have it 40 years later , it hasn't been worn for a long time but I will never part with it x
I was watching this video again and thought to myself “is this book really that expensive?” So I googled it just now and found it on eBay for way less than what you said. After tax and shipping, it was just under $60. Needless to say I’ll have my own copy of this book before the week is over!
Did anyone else catch that the sides are supposed to be double crochet and just the corner stitches are trebles? I think that would help if he a little more square. But no bother! It turned out beautiful as always!!
I was wondering about that myself. But I couldn't read the instructions on my phone. I think I'll mosey on over to Corinna's Etsy shop and pick up the pattern.

wonderful hearing you make the pattern the way you want to! I wonder if round 3 was supposed to start with turning your work and going back into the corner you had just finished? edit: or they just missed the slip over instructions in that row! at least the repeat had them :)
The first words of the 3rd round are to slip over the first treble, in other words, you would have ended the previous round by joining into the top of your 5 chain, then slip stitch over the treble, putting you in the middle of the group.
I love these videos. But can I ask what happened to your destashing video? I was in the middle of watching it and was gonna come back to it and now I can't find it!
I think one thing confusing you if that you’re counting your chain/stacked singles as a treble and the pattern isn’t. So it says to slip past the first treble, which puts you in the middle of that group of four because the first “stitch” isn’t a stitch, it’s a chain. You’re counting that first group as 1-2-3-4 trebles, but it’s actually 0-1-2-3 the way the pattern is referring to it.
This was such an enjoyable video, thank you so much, but I have a burning need to mention a couple of things.. all right, three things :) 1 Whoever decided that the US and the UK needed different crochet terms, I curse you to the end of time, you've made everything twice as hard for us all :*( 2 The Victorian era was the first age of mass, cheap printing, they were NOT good at testing and proof reading! 17:00 what they are saying is that the 5 chain counts as the first long treble of the group. They are not saying that the slip stitch counts as 1 of the 5 chain

Thanks for the video.
That's a very nifty variation on our granny stitch. And the border is extremely elegant.
It’s so much prettier in thinner yarn. The details stand out.
Haven't finished watching yet, so you might still get it yourself, too, but the reason they are starting each round between the first and second Treble is that they do not count the starting chain as a real treble, so the centre of the cluster is actually between the first and second true treble stitch; hope that makes sense...
That's what I was thinking. The pattern instructions could have been more clear though. (A comment that applies to a _lot_ of these vintage patterns!)
That is the perfect explanation. I thought they wanted you to turn your work so you were at a corner.
Corinna, this shawl is exactly what I have been looking for. It is a tighter stitch than some of the others. Well done. 💕🇨🇦
Every person that uses a pattern makes changes to make the process and project better even back in the day. Some comments need to be ignored. ❤
i think whenever i don’t know what movie to watch, i‘ll just come here to watch these videos of yours haha
Thought it would make a nice baby blanket.

Don’t listen to the haters. I would probably do a stacked stitch to start as I don’t like starting with a long chain, either. You do beautiful work ❤️🧶
Good for you using stacked singles. If the original pattern writers had known this technique, I’m sure it would have been incorporated.
Beautiful! Good on you for those stacked singles!
I think they said between first and second long trebles because they are not considering the starting chain to be a long treble. So that would indeed put you starting in the center of the group.
Pronunciation of Andalusian: and illusion

I'd totally wear such a shawl! The yarn, the pattern, the border, your quite reasonable adaptations - it's perfect!
OmG I’m definitely getting this pattern. ❤ Thanks for making it available!
Gonna make this in #10 thread for a table cover. Large enought for my round coffee table. Beautiful work!!

Oh Mylanta! Vintage crochet patterns and knit patterns are so confusing. You are awesome for trying to figure them out.

Beautiful! Don’t let others get you down! I love this stuff and you go girl! God bless

I prefer your edge looks so pretty
Oh this is lovely. I wasn't totally sold on this stitch for a shawl initially but when I saw your fluffy brushed version, it won me over completely. I love the other one now it has the edging too!
What a beautiful shawl. The blue one looks like it would be so cozy to lounge in.
32:29 the repeat starts with the 4 chain and dc, so all but the last long treble should have a picot, for a total of 5 picots.
42:42 with 5 picots you would be able to do it 4 times

This is just absolutely beautiful!!!
Very cute! And I love that yarn
So pretty! I've been looking for a new border for a baby blanket I'm working. This one will be perfect. Thank you.
Yeah! Anew mystery!
What a beautiful border ❤

thats beautiful thankyou
Did you notice that you said shawl when doing the first round of the boarder....haha oopps someone forgot that word.... Love it.
Merlin always startles me lol
Fantastic
Love this one Corrina ❤❤❤🇦🇺
Did anyone else catch that the sides are supposed to be double crochet and just the corner stitches are trebles? I think that would help if he a little more square. But no bother! It turned out beautiful as always!!
That's what I was wondering when the pattern said treble and then long treble.
I was wondering about that myself. But I couldn't read the instructions on my phone. I think I'll mosey on over to Corinna's Etsy shop and pick up the pattern.

I want to make some around 1880s doily pattern for the top of my 1880s drawers and You have inspired me to try a doily patterh I found from the mid 1800s. it is a tad confusing but fun.
I have a quick question what is this mysterious book that people are selling for such an high price? I felt some of my Scottish ancestry jumped in shock at those prices you mentioned.
Just found your channel. Love it! I'm after binge watching 4 of them already this morning 🙈 Do you have an Instagram page? I can't seem to find it
I hear your secretary is back for the summer 😂😂😂😂
(I had previously mentioned the sound of your AC sounds like someone on a typewriter)😂
wonderful hearing you make the pattern the way you want to!

28:30 “corner of the shawl” lol
LOL I guess you didn't realize you read "corner of the shawl" in the directions for the border earlier too. LOL
Even Mrs Beeton's contains some absolute howlers, it's perfectly normal for you to have to bodge a few things! 3 I know it wouldn't make for good videos, but it was drummed into us as youngsters that you read ALL the instructions, all the way to the end, before you start :)
I watch this whole video and would like to know how can a square be a shawl I been crocheting over 30 yesrs
as I show at the end , you fold it, hold it in a diamond shape and fold it , it creates a triangle
I'm all for freedom of expression, but I would have loved to see what this looked like as the pattern intended.
17:00 what they are saying is that the 5 chain counts as the first long treble of the group. They are not saying that the slip stitch counts as 1 of the 5 chain
