    • @cardbored_

Cascade Fathead II, super ribbon mics for the price, you can get them for like $200 used a lot of the time, which is crazy good price for what you get. I use them on guitar amps paired with an SM57. I have a couple of the stock ones and one with the Lundhal upgrade, they're both great!

Beyerdynamic has been making this Hypercardioid model and the M130 Fig 8 Ribbon for DECADES, and I would wager ALL of the MAJOR Commercial Recording Studios own them. They are as ubiquitous as: AKG C414, Sennheiser MD421, Shure SM57, Shure SM7b and the Neumann U47. Ask them to send you the M201!! It's an SM57 killer - Steve Albini describes it like this: "If the SM57 were a microphone, it would be the M201" - Hah! Keep the content coming Andrew! 👊🏻🦁

I happen to be a Beyerdynamic fanboy myself❣
The M 160 is an old standard that is still hard to beat, and can be used on just about anything and everything. Tony Visconti told me to get an M 160 for my voice, and hence, kicked off my love of ribbon mics.
Geoff Daking of Daking Audio told me that the M 160 is his favorite and desert island microphone. Ken Scott has always used them on overheads. I saw Glyn Johns pair one with an SM57 and close mic one of Eric Clapton's small guitar amps. Eddie Kramer used one in Conjunction with a U67 and a 421 on guitar amps. Andy johns used two as overheads (only) on John Bonham's drums for "When The Levy Breaks."
Like you, I use Cloudlifters too. (I use them on dynamic mics as well.)
Try combining an M 160 and an M 201 TG on a guitar amp.
The M 130 is a great ribbon mic too; it is figure 8 like most ribbons. Try it on bass amps 3 to six feet back.
There's a great acoustic guitar stereo micing technique utilizing an M 160 and M 130. You can find the video here on TH-cam.
Both the M 160 and M 130 are great on brass, horn, and string instruments; and you probably won't need any compression or limiting.
I recommend getting a hold of som Shure KSM313 mics, and trying using them as you would the M 160 or M 130. It also makes a great bass drum mic. Sometimes it's difficult to use either the KSM313 or the M 160 or the M 130.
One thing I would love to do with the KSM313 is mic a drum kit using the Glyn Johns Technique. Using the back of the top and side mics with the polarity reversed, and the front side on the bass drum. If you can do this let us know.
Two other excellent ribbon mics are the Audio-Technica 4080 and 4081. Both are active, so there's no need for any signal boosting device.

I was able to use the 130/160 pair once and immediately they were on the top of my list. You could use any Figure8, of course, but for a more cohesive match ya know. Keep getting after it brother!

  • @danjensen2108

It makes sense that M160s wouldn't work well in ORTF. ORTF already has a pretty weak center image and using hypercardioid mics would only emphasize that. That said, ORTF can work pretty great as overheads since it clears out some space in the center for kick and snare close mics if you're getting quite a bit of size from those.

Ribbons are probably the best kept secret in the digital music era. Nothing smooths out digital like a ribbon. And for vocals, well, just about any ribbon will do. If you like the top end of expensive condensers (like the U47 or U67 etc) but don't have 20 grand a ribbon is what you want. It's as close as you'll get to something like a classic Neumann mic from the 60s. On vocals anyway. You'll need an EQ but the good news is a ribbon will take whatever kind of EQ you got. And it'll take a lot of it. I'd suggest a good analogue EQ. Siemens W295B and a Neve 1073 is what I use but any analogue EQ will probably sounds pretty good. It'll work with digital EQ but I don't know about phase issues etc. Don't use a Cloud Lifter though. Just spend the money on a good preamp. Lots of benefits to owning a good preamp. And for vocals, I mean it's really a no-expenses-spared type situation so spend the money.
