It’s over - PlayStation’s Biggest Ally Jumps Ship

Square Enix is "aggressively pursuing" a multiplatform strategy, including "Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PCs".
The company's new medium-term business plan was shared today alongside its latest financial report, and follows news of both a review of its development system and the abandonment of £112m of in-development projects.
The multiplatform strategy is part of a move to "diversify earnings opportunities" and aims to allow more customers to "enjoy our titles in regards to major franchises and AAA titles including catalogue titles".
Square Enix's biggest releases in recent years have been console-exclusive to PlayStation, including the likes of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Final Fantasy 16, and Forspoken, with PC releases either alongside or in the pipeline.
While no specific games are identified here, it suggests that some of the company's biggest could make their way to Xbox in future - or perhaps Switch 2. At the least, Square Enix's biggest game - Final Fantasy 14 - made its way to Xbox recently.
The strategy will "maximise digital sales of new titles" as well as "pursue initiatives designed to win over PC users" which the company sees as a growth opportunity.
The shift to multiplatform also includes mobile games, which will not only release on iOS and Android but potentially PC too. Mobile gacha game Final Fantasy Ever Crisis is already set for a Steam release.
Square Enix will also "leverage IP across media formats", suggesting the likes of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest could be seen more outside of games.
The company's new development pipeline will shift from quantity to quality, balancing developer creativity with data from customers and the wider market. AAA releases will be released regularly, while "mid-class titles" will prioritise profitability. As such, it will be "bold" in creating new franchises, to prioritise "novel forms of excitement" balanced with earnings potential.

God of War: Ragnarok is reportedly the next PlayStation exclusive to make its way over to PC.
Normally reliable leaker billbil-kun - who shed plenty of details on Mortal Kombat 1 and PS Plus lineups in the past - reports God of War: Ragnarok "is one of the next PlayStation exclusive titles to be ported on PC." Whether or not the game shows up at Sony's rumored State of Play showcase, the announcement is supposedly "imminent" and could be coming later this month.

Spider-Man only sold 1.5 Million on PC. Its sold 33 million on Playstation. God of War sold 20 million on Playstation and 3 million on PC. PC gamers pirate Single Player games, that why Sony waits for the console sales to slow down before porting. You know at least 3 times those numbers have played the games on PC.

Final Fantasy 7 isn't selling well Because the majority of the hard-core fans wanted the original game completely remastered and not a remake. I think the remake is cool and all but if they would have made the original Final Fantasy 7 game with today's graphics then I believe that game would have sold like pancakes lol.

Exactly - it was store exclusive, and they scrapped the NA PS4 version I believe? (I had to get the Switch version). AND it was way over priced.

I think it's a good thing we don't need exclusives. People shouldn't be punished because they chose a certain console. All games should be on all platforms. Simple as that.
Why should a company put games out for their competition? If you care that much buy both systems.

I totally disagree that all games need to go multi-platform, as others pointed out, many Sony games didn't do well on PC at all. And they do want their 30% share of 3rd party sales, so they want me to buy their console even if a first party exclusive game might take a hit. First party games can be "loss leaders".
For Square -- I do think multi-platform is necessary -- its not Sony is the exclusives that are killing them -- yes the 2 FF games were expensive, but sold okay -- I look at all the other properties they've tried lately - Pixel Remaster was on everything and it was just too expensive. And they botched the physical release as an expensive store exclusive. Just really bad marketing strategy.
Then, even with Switch having a bazillion console install base -- we see Monster Hunter Stories 1 and 2 coming over to PS5 now. And we saw Dragon Quest Treasure Hunter and Dragon Quest Dark Price ( I bought both) just not do well on just Switch. Those cost them less to make, but still didn't sell well on just Nintendo. I think square would be more upset at Foam Stars which was a failed experiment than FF16's sales. To be fair i love Splatoon and Foamstars fell short - it was a bad product.
For sure going to PC with FF will sell more copies of Rebirth and 16. But I think Nintendo exclusives coming to Sony would do well for them as well, as Octopath and Bravely Default also didn't light up the charts on Switch... I dont see any ports going to Xbox moving the needle at all. So I think they just need to focus on games getting a "Nintendo/Sony/PC" simultaneous release. As Xbox is currently seeing the need to go multi-platform, and to an extent Sony is seeing that as well; (they will be day and date on PC and PS5 at some point).
I just think square has crazy high expectations -- the see themselves as having these 10 million sales juggernauts IP still, and really they have a few properties that used to hit that, people used to line up for Dragon Quest in Japan, but even then thats only like 4 million copies. And that peaked with DQ V- VIII decades ago. I think they are a stale brand sadly.
@@squidracerX what I mean is we have exclusive but so let's say spiderman 2 came out on PS5 right. Then after 2 years they should release it to Xbox. Same with Xbox games. But games like helldiver's and call of duty should not be exclusive only it should be multi platform that's my thinking sorry for not being clear and specific. But I agree also with u as well

The pixel remasters were put out on PS4 but they wanted $100 for them and it was a limited time time and now they’re like $600 if you want a copy of the PS4 version

In a message from current PlayStation boss Hiroki Totoki, it was said that Sony will be making new announcements in May that will provide fans with more information on "the long-term vision" that the company has for PlayStation. Totoki didn't blatantly say that these reveals will come about in a State of Play or PlayStation Showcase, but the implication is clear that such an event should be right around the corner. To that end, we should learn relatively soon the date and time of this broadcast if it is indeed taking place in May.

Rebirth and FF16 were fantastic games.
The reason why the pixel remaster is probably not as good at sales it’s because most of that sales are on the switch there’s barely any copies for the PS4 and when you do see a PS4 copy of the pixel remaster it’s going for $1000 on the PS4 version. The pixel for the switch goes for 85 which is retail at this point so for me what I spend $1000 for the pixel remastered if I had $1000 yes for the PS4 but I do that for no way I wouldn’t even spend $80 on that one but would rather spend retail price for the pixel, the PS4 one yes came out and I won’t never buy digitally cause I like buying those games physically

I guess i have a bit of a different take on than you do on ps5 sales - Sony having PS5 Q4 sales down over last year -- thats 100% going to happen when it was a record setting Q4, on top of the fact that this year we are in the economic inflation slump -- i dont think it really has much of anything to do with the games coming out. Last year was the first year they finally had consoles in stock ,so people could buy them. Along with new models coming out and some bundles (I got mine finally on sale with a bundle). So yeah , I think its much more complex than just "they have no good games right now".
I got a portal coming from Best Buy open box excellent and I had a $50 card so $125 delivered.
Sony has their expectations on sales & SE has their own, SE wants Remake numbers at minimum which they got from the pandemic which at the same time SE blamed the ps5 install base being not enough.. so it’s not hard to see why they want to go Day1 Multiplat

A big announcement would be if I actually was able to download and play fallout76 on my ps5
Despite being subscribed to ps plus extra the game is unavailable to me and I’m prompted that I own a different version but that one isn’t even available.
And so far no one at Sony support has been able to help despite several attempts.

I think people are mis-diagnosing SE problem with the revenue. They are finally seeing the covid dip, that's all it is. People are reading too much into it, and their reasons, are reasonable, but it's a few years past covid so people will not actually give them the covid grace.

I think everyone is sick of so many final fantasy games. They need to make something new. Anything over 5 games in a series is to much.
I think gaming in general has just gone down over the passed couple years. It was drfinitely up during the pandemic where people had a lot of extra time and money to spend. But well into 2024; people are back to work, raising the babies that were made during lockdown, and just don't have the time/money to beplaying games like in 2020-2022.

So, I don't know what circles you run around in, but the SE stance of "I don't think they are going to see that big of a sales bump" when they start releasing their games day in date with all platforms possible... I didn't get to play KH3 or FF7 Remake until their PC release because I did not see a reason to buy a $400-$500 console just to play a couple games that will eventually come to PC anyway. I have also talked to a LOT of SE fans who have stated that they would love to play the FF7 remakes and FFXVI but see it the same way I did. I guarantee you that, once games like FFVII: Part 3, KH4, and FFXVII come out on PC, Xbox, PS, and Switch, it's going to DRASTICALLY effect sales numbers. Playstation owners might not have thought the quality was up to the price, but that is only one subset of people. SE was content putting their eggs in one basket, but the issue is that the basket will always either be too light or too heavy...
Pc players should should stick to word and Excel and find a new hobby
