She gets rejected not because of her grades but because in her application she lacks character, due to her parents making her study all the time that means she doesn’t to sports, after school activities and she doesn’t have other commitments so universities don’t see what’s so special abt her

Exactly! It takes more than grades to be successful. I'm a Harvard graduate and I'm studying law there. When I first got accepted, I was making A's and B's (mostly A's, maybe one B) my junior year all the way through my senior year, and a 1508 average for the SAT but I was very well rounded and got involved into the community. That's all there is to it. They aren't looking for the perfect-grade students, but students who are well-rounded.

Chad lee I understand but they still need a social life. Going to school and straight home, you will develop no social skills. High school is a very important time of their life, but also their last time as a minor. After high school they’re going to be working for the rest of their life.

@@chadlee870 yeah that might be one of the reasons but Nhi Le is also right as well, my parents who are Vietnamese consider any college or university with a 40% or higher acceptance rate as easy to get in which means that it isn't worth aiming for. They see it as an embarrassment to themselves if they let me go to any university or college that is "easy" to get in.

I'm a Korean-American. I was born in Chicago, Illinois. And guess what? My parents don't treat me like these morons do. What happens when I get a bad grade? They tell me to do better next time, and say there's nothing you can do since it's the past. They have NEVER been stubborn or strict about grades in any way. Compare them to white parents. Education works best when the child wants to learn and has a supportive environment to do so. I get to hang out and live a normal, happy life. I get to live a good childhood.

As a Japanese who was born and raised in Kyoto in the most traditional way, these american asian kids have it SO easy.
My parents were 10 times stricter and harsher on me. I didn't have more than 3 hours of sleep a day from age 12 to age 18. I studied 18 hours a day then had to go to martial arts lessons. If i had complained even once my parents would have kicked me out of the house at 15 years old and told me to manage by myself and i would have never seen them again.
And i am a man i had it easy, because girls had to study twice harder because their mothers wanted them to succeed while their father told them that all they needed to do was marry a rich man and have kids (and become slaves of their mother in law). Plus girls on top of studying constantly had to also take care of everything in the house, cleaning, cooking washing up, laundry, and on top of that piano and violin lessons, and in even stricter Japanese families had to learn the tea ceremony, incense ceremony, flowers arranging, calligraphy, etc, ...
For me, the lives of these american asian kids feels like a spa. And i should not even complain, at least i am Japanese, if i were Korean, it would be even harder, because there the pressure is twice harder than Japan and the parents also starve the girls to death and send them to plastic surgeon to make sure they look like models, and boy are expected to look like GI Joes (which eventually completely destroys their self-esteem).
Asian parents are insanely toxic and the most toxic thing of all is that love that parents have for their kids is not unconditional, you have to deserve it and earn it twith straight A's and impeccable behaviour and when you fail they will scold you and make you feel like you have shamed the entire family since the first ancestor and for generations to come and will tell you that they curse the day you were born, that you are worthless and useless and cost them only worries and money.
In the west if a western kid bring home 9 A's and on B the parents will be thrilled and overjoyed and will maybe even get a present for the kid, when i did this, my parents scold me for 3 hours for not getting 10 A's and sent me to my room to study for a full month and brought food to my room, and i was only allowed to leave it to use the toilets, bathe or go to school. And the door was constantly open so that my mother could check on me all the time.
When i am asked why the suicide rate of people between age 10 and 18 is so high in Japan, i always answer that my only surprise is that it is not higher.

It is crazy how different our cultural backgrounds can be. Im a caucasian American. My parents hardly raised me at all and gave no guidance and had no expectations for grades.
Simply put, im not very smart. I never have been. I dont grasp very basic concepts easily. Although I wish I had parents who have me more structure and cared about my success. I think it is important to let their kids pick what career they want to follow with guidance of course. But still leaving the path entirely to them. That’s what my mom did for me. When I was younger I wanted to be an art teacher and my mom said ok. Then I wanted to be an author and she said ok I’ll support you. Then I said I wanted to be a cop. Through all of that she supported me, and I always really appreciated her for that.

I hated it, I damn near went into a spiral of depression and lack of motivation and loathing myself. It wasn't until I moved away from my family that I learned that not everything is all based on grades. Right now, I'm going to my dream college, I've got a whole lot of connections and I'm excited to see where the future leads me.

As much as it hated studying for all of it, i sucked it up and gave it my all, and seeing their proud faces when i did great in the competitions made it all worth it. And when i say pushed me it was NEVER like this.
On the subject of ivy leegue schools, that was actually a dream but never a reality all in part of my own laziness to study for the SAT and ACT. Took the ACT 3x and my highest score was a 23. But with that score i ended up going to the best school i know, LOUISIANA TECH BABY!! 🔵🔴🐶 That 23 helped my a lot scholarship wise and made me realize that ivy leagues are not the only path to success.

If they want their child to be happy, they aren't doing a good job. Their kids look so stressed. :/ They aren't listening and they think it's a big joke, like they can just say "DO THIS. DO THAT" and the kids won't feel any negative effects from not being teenagers?? To see the smile on her face fade because her father wasn't proud of her shattered me. This is why kids have self esteem issues. IT'S NEVER ENOUGH FOR THE PARENTS.

    • @DP-jy2ge
      @DP-jy2ge 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

TheMagicalSofa You could not be more wrong. It's the kids who receive constant cheap and easy praise who end up with self-esteem problems. Cheap and easy praise is the preferred tool of lazy and disinterested parents, and it's this disinterest which tells later in life. The kids in this piece have very committed and involved parents, so they have a very solid sense of being valued.

TheChickenRiceBowl That's an absurd leap to make - that involved parents are living vicariously through their children. The majority of such parents are themselves successful professionals, and are in no need of boosting. I see more of that controlling thing from arty and lax parents ... who insist via conditioning that their kids are also arty, or musical, or whatever, to the point that such kids are effectively brainwashed into making a career of it. Asian parents don't compel kids into particular careers ... they simply make sure they don't choose useless degrees which will never earn them any money. That's not controlling, that's being a responsible and caring parent. Love isn't only hugs and freedom ... it's the cold hard work of setting our kids up to succeed materially, as well as psychically. That means involvement and ego-less guidance.

DP 63 Are you kidding me? One of the things I have ever wanted was someone, most of all my dad, to tell me that I was good at something, or I did well. Not "Oh yeah, you got a 85 on your test. Why didn't you get a 100, Pranav's dad just told me at work today that his son got a 95 on his test." My mom is the only one who tells me that I did something good, even then she will backtrack immediately anyways. You shouldn't constantly be shoving praise at them for everything, but I wouldn't mind if for once something I did was good enough. It's disappointing to work hard to not even get a little praise from them.

I feel bad for them and I really hope they can find happiness in life and that what their parents can realize what they’ve done and become better people.

Nah, most people who even apply to Harvard Princeton Yale have full score acts and full scores on 3-4 SAT subjects tests. For Asians, that's practically expected for any applicant. You need extracurriculars and leadership on top of that. Even non hyp like Penn, Dartmouth, Cornell, and Brown have like a 2-3% acceptance rate for Asians, and most of them applying will have full scores. It's crazy.

He blamed not doing any extra curricular and his obsession to his school rank. He ended up going to Cornell. Other stories like this were not uncommon in my school.

@@army_4ever748 actually, I have also tried to think in their pov and I think I can understand them. The thing is that Asian parents want us to achieve the things that they never could achieve. They think that if they push us to have good grades, atleast we will be able to get into good colleges and get a good job and earn money. I am sure they also feel regret somewhere in their life and thus, making us do things. I believe this kind of parenting is not healthy and should never be encouraged. A kid should have the freedom to choose whatever they want to become in their life. This kind of parenting runs in the family. My grandmother used to beat up my mom when she was younger and she was also verbally abusive but they never realised it. So now my mom also does the same to me. Honestly, I am just gonna start being independent and start earning my own money and then move out when I turn 18.
