    Q: Did you clean out the fans and replace thermal paste while you were in there? The fans sound kind of loud!
    A: Of course! It’d be silly to not to clean out the paste while I’m in there. It was CRUSTY like you have no idea. 😷 I documented that process on my Instagram. If you’re curious, Link in the description or just click here! 🤗

      You own the greatest macbook ever created imho. Go for 16gb of ram and at least a 1tb drive, also replace the thermal paste. Sierra will work flawlessly on this machine, but Mojave isn't that bad either. Good luck!

    • @garybeltrand5802
      @garybeltrand5802 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A 2012 15" is an awesome macbook even by 2020 standards. New SSD, fresh OS install and extra RAM and it'll be ready for Thunder Road. 8GB RAM and 250GB SSD would be fine, but if it's for graphics/video more is better.

    • @mykeekym
      @mykeekym 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the 13" as well and I upgraded it to 10gb of RAM and 250ssd. I might be ramping it to 16gb soon and 1tb of SSD. though I have a problem with its heat. It is a bit hot when I do video editing in FCPX. Any tips guys?

    tip: when you're shooting, especially on videos like these, don't use the AF mode on your camera. it'll change focus everytime you move your hands. switch it to MF and focus it to the table. that way it'll be easier for us to see the video. cheerio

    When installing the SSD, you also need to transfer over the 4 silver pins that are screwed into the existing HDD.
    They locate the SSD inside the Macbook and will anchor it down to prevent it moving.
    Edit: Never mind...sorry just saw the part where you transferred them over.

    Thanks a ton mate! I just did the same for macbook early 2011 one. One small note for those want reinstall OS... when you press command r while rebooting it installs the original OS that came with the laptop. Instead, press option command r so you can install the latest OS that your laptop supports.

    mine is MBP 13" early 2011 and still using it now for daily work (dev).
    almost 4 years ago i replaced one of my 2GB RAM with 8GB, so total i get 10 GB RAM.
    i replaced my hdd with a new ssd 256GB and swap the dvd drive with my original hdd 500GB using hdd caddy adapter.
    the only thing i left is the battery, with over 1k cycles and battery capacity 3128mAh (54%), but still good to use for 4 hours work :)
    when you setup new ssd to your old MBP, make sure to check on TRIM support is active.

    I actually have the 13 inch early 2011. I was almost going to try to save up for a new one but, it’s just putting a solid-state drive and it can bring some life into it that’s a little bit of a cheaper option for the time being :-) I’ll have to have someone do it for me as to the fact that I am blind and cannot see to do it myself. I'm pretty sure those batter screws were stripped because they're actually "triangular".....not sure what the true name is, but they have 3 prongs, instead of 4 like Phillips screw heads. I've got 2 of those machines (early and late 2011) and they both have triangular battery screws. (actually, I just realized you're doing the 15" model, which might be different...I've got the 13" Macbook)

    • @DammitJeff
      @DammitJeff  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Theyre Tri-wing 00 screws! The last person who owned this likely didn't know the difference and ended up using a phillips head to try and remove it. No good 😳

    Hi Jeff, really like the way ur videos are made....no mess no fuss even for someone like me who is planning to fix her 2 MacBook Pro ( 2010 & 2012).
    - one overheated MB pro 2010 for which a new SSD & new memory might be required
    - and a MB pro 2012 which is now dislaying a flashing folder with question mark ( it seems like the cable of HD is dead & need to be replaced).

    I have the exact same spec but in a 13-inch model, It's my first Mac and it's a hand-me-down from my aunt so its very mint and I decided to swap in a new SSD and new RAM just like yours. However, it gets hot after a few hours of usage, is it normal to do that? I heard from forums that it was the SSD/HDD connector(?) which needed to be replaced with newer year model Macbook(?).
    But aside from that, it's a dream machine and now I know why people love these things back then; it's so usable even in 2021.
    Though I still have my Windows laptop as a daily driver, and was already familiar with it.

    You could've found 16GB of RAM for under $50 really. Not sure what the budget was here though. Also on these machines, instead of scrapping the HDD, assuming it's still functional, it's better to save it and use it as either a built-in Time Machine back up, or media drive. Then, you install the SSD in the optical drive bay. You'll still get SATA3 speed. Also, I can't tell from the shot, but should disconnect the battery when installing the SSD. Maybe you did, but I couldn't tell.

    Thanks for this! I am actually working with an 11-year-old Macbook Pro just like this one on High Sierra,with just 8GB Ram and 1 TB Harddrive.I pimped and let them repair it as often as possible(changed the graphic card even twice by now).I love the fact that everybody says:“Ugh..but Macs are soooo expensive!!!“ and then I say:“Yep,but I paid that once and I‘m 11 years with the same guy and still going strong!;-)“ …well,I said that until 3 days ago and I reall did everything that you can find on the internet EXCEPT for baking my logic board to fix the paste of the graphic card.I am really scared of this step,especially with all the MacGyverness that come to it..but it seems line it‘s the only possibility that‘s left since all the other steps(Recorvery Mode,Secure Mode,Single User Mode,NVRAm,SCrwhatever..And take out the battery..I did it all…)screen starts grey,want the user code,tries to boot,stops half way and goes grey-blank again…but I realized it seem to be „on“,so I figured it could be the graphic card.Anyhow,thanks for this video because it really does take the fear away from me to play Macgyver on my old baby.

    Yo man the docking station needs you to be on your desktop in order to clone. You don’t need to be a genius just the right set of common sense

    I know this video is from January but, as someone who used to repair these, don't plug the battery back in before replacing the other parts just as a safety precaution.

    I have never used Mac-book pro but am getting chance to use 2011 Mac-book pro 17-inch. Can I watch TH-cam and use MS-office for words and Excel? also can I install few basic, small softwares like CPU-Z, VLC media player, Adobe acrobat reader. can I play old arcade games like Pacman using emulator. Window-7 has an option of playing old games by changing compatibility of the software, is there any similar function in mac-OS?

    This is a great video! I replaced the HD with a Crucial SSD but the MacBook can't detect it. Do you think it's because I didn't transfer the 4 screws from the HD? Or because I don't have a frame thingy for the SSD?

    • @nelq8186
      @nelq8186 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Make sure you plugged it well. If still not detecting it, it could be the wire connector itself that’s faulty

    The lens zoom noise bothers me a bit but excellent video overall.

      @DammitJeff  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Glad to hear you're enjoying it. Not too sure what I could do to resolve the lens noise. An external mic would still pick it up, and I do rely on the zoom to show close up shots. Uhh..I guess getting a different lens would help but anything with the equivalent zoom would be pricey. 😬

    @Dammit Jeff: A faster way is so simply clone the drive externally with a cloner. Or use Time machine. I understand where you come from using disk image through the Disk Utility, but that takes time and is not guaranteed. By the way, the max RAM for this machine is actually 16GB. Yes Apple says 8Gb, but trust me, it takes 16GB max no problem and does not make the OS unstable. Good video though.

    Hello, first of all I would like to say that I love your channel and this video is so dope :) . It even got me motivated to fix my old macbook Pro. I have Macbook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011), It has 2 GHz Intel Core i7 Processor, Memory - 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3, Graphics - Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB. It has macOS Sierra Version 10.12.06. I would like to know if that parts that you used in your video would also be suitable for my laptop? Thank you and Keep Up The Good Work :) .

    quick question . can you upgrade this model with 16gb ram ?

  • @ram-zs7yq
    @ram-zs7yq 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi! I have a 2011 15' MBP and had the logic board replaced back in 2016 when apple announced a recall program for this particular model. But 2 years later by December 2018, it failed again, with blue screen and lines, or just a plain white screen. I've read it's also because of gpu issues with this particular model. Now, I'm thinking of having it checked and repaired in a local repair shop, then yeah ask to have the ram and hdd upgraded to an ssd. Do you think it'll last for at least another 2 years? I'm worried since people on the internet say its a gpu issue and replacing the logic board, the issue may just appear again...

    Hi Jeff.
    I changed my battery in my 2011.
    Now I think I may need to BUY a new computer the Guy at the repair shop told me.
    Cuz there is a burnmark on the top right side Of the m- board. With battery facing me.
    You think I could do anything more before giving up?
    I got it running a short while.
    No internet connection.
