The speed is slower on the SSD after being in your computer because of the motherboard, not the drive. The older motherboards can only give so much bandwidth, whereas you need a m.2 slot or PCIE x4 slot to run it at full bandwidth. If you were to take that and put it into a PC with a moderately higher their motherboard it would likely achieve at least similar to advertised speeds.
Sweet, thanks. I have a 500 Gb SSD in my MBP of this era so if I ever need to change the drive I'll remember not to waste my money on one that is faster than the speeds the motherboard can handle.
I just upgraded the drive and memory in my macbook pro 2019. our company makes adapters for nvme and it is a good idea if you know what you are doing and have the equipment to change the drive controller on the logic board as well as some of the capacitors and resistors to jump the voltage for the controller from 3.45v to 3.75v. this will give you the top speed of your drive. you can upgrade the 3d nand on new macs but you need to know component level repair.

I wish would have seen this video Last year. As an Apple certified Macintosh Technician, and Owner of a computer repair store, I would have told you to immediatly enable trim support in Terminal upon installing Mac OS after your successful migration. Trim Support does something similar to what disk permissions on a Mac or Defrag does on a PC. It allows MacOS to fill in empty blocks on the SSD after deleting files. You may experience premature SSD failure as a result of not enabling trim support. Trim Support is auto enable on OEM Apple SSD and Flash storage drive. This happened to a friend of mine. Best of luck..!
Great vid ! I've been wanting to do this on my macbook pro early 2015 too ! I'm not that computer savy so all of the steps and file transfers make me nervous to open up my laptop myself, would you ever make like an in-depth video on how to do this? something slower with a bit more steps maybe 😅

I just did the same thing. I upgraded my 2014 MacBook Pro to a 2 TB hard drive. I am a DJ so it feels good to have all my music in one place instead of having to carry around a external hard drive. I also noticed that taking external hard drive‘s and moving too much to a lot of gigs actually adds to the wear and tear of the hard drive.
This video saved me! My SSD went out in my 2015 MacBook Pro, and I didn't know this was an option. I grabbed a Fledging 1TB Feather M13 Turbo. It seemed cheaper than buying the SSD and adaptor. Also, it came pre-loaded with macOS High Sierra. Only took a few minutes to instal, and when I turned it on, I updated straight to Big Sur. MacBook is working better than when it was brand new.
I have a 15" mid 2014 Mac Book pro that I have put through the ringer with hundreds of video projects. It's still kicking. I've reapplied thermal paste once, and changed the battery 3 times. I think I'll upgrade to the m.2 drive now. After that, buying a used 2016 and upgrading it seems like the way to go, as 500 dollars seems better than 2500-3500 dollars for the m2 macbook pros.
1. The battery drains way faster after this upgrade (as the sleep isn't recognized for the SSD, there are some mods on the system but didn't figure anything yet worth while) 2. You can use a sabrent rocket drive without any issues in recognizing it directly (also cheaper ;) ) 3. if you are already in the macbook, clean it at least
Did the OWC 2TB Aura Pro X2 upgrade to my 15” mid 2015 MBP and it now gets upwards of 2850 MB/s write and 3020.1 MB/s read on Monterey. Very impressed with this old laptop that I inherited from my mother.
I have the same computer and I did the same upgrade and had the same problem with hard drive recognition. What a pain. It was so nice to hear another person complain about it. Haha
I have a mid 2010 MacBook Pro (with the GPU issue) and I was able to replace the popped battery, upgrade to 8GB of RAM, and I put a 480GB SSD in it. Worked as my daily driver for a while, it had the newest macOS at the time which I was really happy about. I stopped using it when the 128GB SSD (put 480GB SSD in different computer) died and the computer never worked that great after that for some reason.
I just bought a 15 inch mid 2014 Macbook Pro. Waiting on my 1tb SSD to arrive...in January. 🙄 It's the 16gb Core i7 with dual graphics. There were two of these exact models, one with the built in Intel GFX and the dual GFX that has the Nvidia GT-750M with 2gb of its own RAM. I've put a new battery in and am just waiting on my 1tb Samsung Evo Plus to arrive and then it'll be a beast. 😃
Macbooks made before 2014/15 (depending on the model) only used PCI X2 for it's NVME storage and your Drive is a PCI x4 drive so if you have a 2015 or newer it would get the 3000+ speed advertised. So in short your NVME drive is only getting 2 lanes of PCI bandwidth compared to newer machines which get 4 lanes of bandwidth so you are getting speeds at the Maximum the port can achieve. 1500 mb/second
I got my sister an OWC SSD replacement for her 2015 mac. Her old one was partially dead from heat damage (yes, partially, it wouldn't boot or detect the drive internally, but I could copy about half the data from it via usb no problem). I'm replacing the thermal paste next.
To be honest. I sold my MacBook Pro 2017. Built my PC and my PC which was a third of that MacBook price, rendered out my project quicker and I was able to add as many storage drives that I wanted to for cheap.
Gerat video. One important thing you "need" to do is is switch on TRIM support " Google: TRIM support for Macbook" Otherwise your TRIM support in "System Report" for your new drive will show "No" which will cause problems later.
I have both the 13 and 15 models and I love them. I was bad and I swapped the sticker from a dead 128GB drive with my 512GB drive in my 15", and sent it off for service. Apple actually swapped the drive and I had a new 512GB drive that I could also use! I stuck that in my 13" and now I have a 256GB drive that I'm going to use in my mom's 128GB MacBook Air.
Did that with my wife's MacBook Pro last year. A little fiddly with making sure the laptop's firmware was first upgraded - by updating macOS, and then we still weren't sure if the occasional not waking up from sleep was software or hardware. Overall I think the 1TB upgrade was worth it for us. As I type this, I can't remember where I put the 512GB original...

You both look alike
I also have a 2015 macbook and I did the exact same process. It took me so long to figure out everything, like 2 weeks. I hope I saw this video back then would save me a lot of time
2017s can be upgraded too. I put a 1TB in my 2017 Pro
The 2016-2017 13-inch, non-touch bar MacBook Pros (a mouthful, I know) are actually upgradeable too. They have detachable SSDs and you can find adapters on Ebay/Amazon.
Yep I got lucky and won an auction on ebay for a late 2016 mbp Core touchbar i7 2.7ghz 16gb 500ssd amd radeon pro 455 model for $180 and assumed it was priced so low for parts but the thing only had slight laminate issues on the bottom right of 15in display that you can't even see unless a white backround is used which I never use obviously and I've pushed it to the limits having 10 apps open at once, rendering a 1hr video on premiere and playing counterstrike on steam at the same time and didn't get a single hiccup...absolutely shocking. Thinking of upgrading it to 1TBSSD now GLAD to know it's the last model to be upgradeable
In my experience, you can boot off of Time machine Backup drives
Still have my 2012 MacBook Pro! Upgraded to a 1TB SSD, and 16GB RAM. Awesome daily driver!
MegaDude531 I too was researching the new mbp 16in.. but no real issues with my mid-2012 mbp 15in.
As a 2019 macbook pro owner with 128 gb, IT’S A STRUGGLE
i have a 349 dollar dell inspiron 3583 and it has more storage than that lol. it has a 256GB ssd, i5-8265U 1.8Ghz quad core and 8GB of DDR4-2666MHz ram. Way better value than a macbook. I used a late 2009 macbook (the white plastic one) and I had 8GB of ram and the original graphics card and cpu white running yosemite. I gave that laptop to my mom and bought a new laptop to use for schoolwork and she loves it. It can still run videos in 720p.
@@chezcake8607 I have a macbook pro and a normal PC... I like the macbook for multiple things: the OS, all the app that are included and useful, its slim and its not heavy(Yeh I have a lot of books in my backpack))
Left this comment while waiting for my time machine backup to complete installing onto my Mac! Thank you for making this video, it really helped!
Macbook Pro 2015, the best macbook series ever. With the apple logo light was awesome
I found someone who also says Compooter. I thought I'd never see the day... Subbed.
Liked and subscribed. I like people who really love the tech they buy. Now a days people buy new phones every 8-10 months, and new laptops ever 1.5 years. But whatever i buy i just buy the top model then i use it for 6-8 years then i buy the top model again. And by the time 5 years pass i get really attached to the product, if people would use their tech for 4-5 years, e-waste would reduce by a huge margin.
7:09 because macbook's motherboard's BUS line is full :D and that's the maximum speed that it can handle, you owe me a subscribe
Still have my 2015 base 13 inch. Screen no longer works but im going to fix it myself and upgrade the storage while im at it. Going to keep it for a long long time. Lots of memories with this thing
Everyone talks about how he says Computer but what about 1:00 in when he says it out of Tim Cook's mouth!!!
When he said Computer, I felt that.
I just upgraded a mid 2009 17 mbp with 8 gig ram and 1tb ssd and new battery. Running Catalina, its sweet and good for another ten years.
Your content is amazing! Your lavender switch video brought me here and all I can say is you are now one of my favorite channels!
Bertha Cazares Wow no way! It means a lot thank you!
There is definitely an adaptor for the 2016-2017 A1708 MacBooks. There are many videos showing this being done, and I myself have done it
It felt like I was watching interstellar, ad astra or something like that 🤣🤣, nice work jeff
Very professional, appreciate this video!! P.S your voice is soothing to hear while watching you open up that MacBook pro
Great vid ! I've been wanting to do this on my macbook pro early 2015 too ! I'm not that computer savy so all of the steps and file transfers make me nervous to open up my laptop myself, would you ever make like an in-depth video on how to do this? something slower with a bit more steps maybe 😅
You still need help at all?
I still have a 15 inch 2015 MacBook pro with top specs and it runs flawlessly!! I'm going to use it until it gives out. It is a beast!
I'm using the 2015 13" macbook pro right now still as good as day one, 5 years later. Not to brag but no windows laptop can achieve that
ThinkPad has entered the chat.
My 2014 Asus laptop still runs good with Win10 and i'm even able to play games on it and able to upgrade ram or ssd easily 😜
I have this model which I basically turned into a desktop when I added two screens, and this was the most straightforward video I could find. THANK YOU!
7:56 "For video editing"
My top spec'd Macbook Pro 15 from 2013: "Don't even think about it"
I have a 2013 one. Works great in 2020 though both side speakers are blown, 3/4 rubber pads torn off, one side of the hinge is loose. Lovin it.
Great video!
Question: did you have any issues with the battery draining when the laptop is asleep?
I upgraded mine with a 1tb Samsung 970evo, and noticed significant battery drain when it’s asleep. Couldn’t find a solution to it.
Same here
Because the 2013-2014 MacBooks don't support native nvme hibernation
I am computer engineer, i design embedded systems, i develop almost every type of code, i render, photoshop, make illustrations, presentations, assignments, thesis, researches with this good boy. I have 128gb, i want to upgrade but i thought cheap options not work. Some people say it can't go sleep after this.
Nice video !
Kampoooterr ;)
I am so in lovr with macbook pro 13 2015 that I have two of these one for uni one for home and both i have been using for the past 5 years. The uni one has never failed me whether it be long final cut pro project or photoshop with tons of layers. Never i had any complains or bottlenecks in terms of speed. Just the storage. I brought another mac to upgrade the 128 coz I likes the machine so much. Have the new 16 in but I still love the 13 2015.
I'm now using macbook pro 15 2016, this stupid machine is driving me crazy. I missed my old 2014 macbook pro 13 so much.
I feel ya there friend. It's why Im so hesitant to upgrade to a new macbook so soon. :( Storage is expensive.
I’ve been rocking with my mid2012 13inch Macbook pro (basic model i5) since release date. This thing has seen be through middle school, high school, and now i just finished my 2nd year of college. Heck i wrote all of my college applications on that thing. *I upgraded the ram to 16gb and HDD to 256gb SDD a few years back and what a difference it made. Wouldn’t be surprised if I get buried with it. 8 years strong 💪 baby
2016 MBP 13” 2 TB ports has replaceable SSD
would 2017 mbp no touchbar also have replaceable ssd?
Jessie Zhu yes, and the greater news is you can also buy ssd adapter for a1708 now. much cheaper than apple ssd.
wow! what a nice over-voice work you did on your own video, and nice voice you have to explain technical aspects of a topic that used to be boring, but not for this, is like listening to a tale about "The Last legendary Upgradable Macbook Pro".. haha... thank you for shared your knowledge.
Dropped a 1tb in mine! Wish I could have done the ram.
Can you link me a video of the exact process to do it I am a student I really need help
5:18 compooter~
This video saved me! My SSD went out in my 2015 MacBook Pro, and I didn't know this was an option. I grabbed a Fledging 1TB Feather M13 Turbo. It seemed cheaper than buying the SSD and adaptor. Also, it came pre-loaded with macOS High Sierra. Only took a few minutes to instal, and when I turned it on, I updated straight to Big Sur. MacBook is working better than when it was brand new.
"compooter"
you're annoying....
Just want to say that this video saved me and my 2015 Macbook Pro. Thank you!
1. The battery drains way faster after this upgrade (as the sleep isn't recognized for the SSD, there are some mods on the system but didn't figure anything yet worth while)
2. You can use a sabrent rocket drive without any issues in recognizing it directly (also cheaper ;) )
3. if you are already in the macbook, clean it at least
I love this! I have the 2015 with 128. I’m going to try this (WITH ZERO EXPERIENCE). Hopefully it’s as easy as you made it look!
I don’t have this compooter and still watched all 9:11 of it lol. this video is just well put together. good stuff man
you make good videos. good voice. good background sound. good transitions. thank you.
Honestly for the past few years I wanted to get this thing even though it's old, and the video was amazing
Haha
This perfectly slow paced and easy to follow I actually think I now have the confidence to try and upgrade my 2014 Macbook Pro!
Don't be nerves dude just keep making clean awesome videos and you will be good.
I recently got the touchbar macbook pro after my '15 Macbook started slowing down and would not install recovery mode. Will def be giving this a shot
I just bought a 15 inch mid 2014 Macbook Pro.
Waiting on my 1tb SSD to arrive...in January. 🙄
It's the 16gb Core i7 with dual graphics.
There were two of these exact models, one with the built in Intel GFX and the dual GFX that has the Nvidia GT-750M with 2gb of its own RAM.
I've put a new battery in and am just waiting on my 1tb Samsung Evo Plus to arrive and then it'll be a beast. 😃
bro i use a ex 4 tb for music - movies - photos
n im satisfied w my 2012 1tb hard drive
You’ve got potential. Don’t stop making videos.
Appreciate you man. Really happy you're enjoying it.
Your editing skills are awesome! You need more subs
Your pacing is spot on. Nice video
The newer base model MBP (i.e 2016 and onward) 13 actually also have replaceable/upgradable SSDs
7:14
256GB SSD should be the base model for every compooter man
It is as of this year with Apple. Took them long enough :)
New favourite channel, very calming and matter of fact. Thank you for sharing! Love MacBooks 😍
Gerat video. One important thing you "need" to do is is switch on TRIM support " Google: TRIM support for Macbook" Otherwise your TRIM support in "System Report" for your new drive will show "No" which will cause problems later.
Why the speed of m.2 ssd is not 3430 MB/s. Your Macbook Pro has PCIe 2.0 with 2 lanes
PCIe 2.0 with 2 lanes bandwidth is 1 GB/s
I laughed my ass off the whole way through the video. Every 10 seconds my man said "compooter" and I just started dying. This shit will never get old.
Dude thanks a ton i really hit a wall cuz i thought i will never be able to upgrade my macbook pro thinking it was soldered on
I have a 2009 MacBook Pro. I had the no idea it was user upgradable. When I replaced the hard drive in ‘14 the Apple Store did it (for a fee).
