The Band On The Run LP was made under extenuating circumstances. Paul wanted to record it in Africa. His drummer Denny Seiwell and guitarist Henry McCullough quit the band before the group flew to Africa. Paul recorded the basic tracks in Lagos Nigeria, playing drums, bass, keys, lead and rhythm guitars; Denny Laine played mainly rhythm guitar, Linda McCartney did harmony vocals and maybe some keys. Paul got mugged by street thugs in Lagos and had to give up his valuables and the song notes he carried. Linda pleaded with the muggers not to kill him: "Don't kill him, he's Beatle Paul." Paul had to remember the songs without the notes. Despite all this many think it was his best LP. "1985" closed the album with that short reprise at the end.
@@Thejazzfan66 He was in the Tug Of War sessions when Lennon was murdered. I think you're making a point I was heading toward but didn't reach...McCartney has done some of his best work when under stress or challenge. I also think Tug Of War and Band On The Run are (in whatever order) the two best LPs of McCartney's solo career, although I haven't listened much to McCartney's post 2010 albums. Of course stress and challenge is why McCartney's work with the Beatles was, overall, better than his solo work. I actually think it was "Tug Of War" (the song) that really defined the Lennon-McCartney relationship although "Here Today" was billed as the tribute.

I was born in 1962 & I'm a big Beatles fan!! I love Paul McCartney I have all the Beatle albums & I have some Paul & Wings. This song takes me back to a moment in my teen year. My brother surprised me about 5 years ago & took me to Paul M concert. This is how he surprised me. He said he received an email & didn't understand it so wanted me to read it. It was his receipt for the 2 tickets to see Paul. I read two tickets then Paul McCartney my hands started shaking I looked at my brother I asked & he played dumb. I shook I cried then he said yes I'm taking you. OMG!! I cried off/on at the concert. Sorry for the long story. ❤
Not only is Paul a great song writer and a great singer... he is also a great multi-instrumentalist. He played pretty much everything on this song. He played the piano... the bass... the drums... the electric guitar..,. and the synthesizer.
~Along with Paul, Linda and Denny Laine, the other six people on the album cover are: *Michael Parkinson* (chat-show host and journalist). Other great tracks of this band is "Listen to What the Man Said", "Getting Closer", and "Some People Never Know" (I don't think they've reacted to those)
Thank you so much for playing this one, my favorite solo Paul song. This was the b-side of the first 45 record I ever bought back in 1974 and as much as I love Band on the Run this song with that fabulous piano riff really grabbed me. And the great buildup at the end. Funny story, back when I got this record I thought the solo at the end was a sax which inspired me to take up saxophone in HS. I later realized I goofed and figured out it was a clarinet, but I'm glad I stuck with the sax.
I don't know why more reactions don't do this song. It's always been one of my favorite McCartney songs. Such a catchy melody, and the way he plays it is so mysterious (almost spooky). He was the King of catchy melodies and harmonies. Another favorite for similar reasons is "Monkberry Moon Delight". So out of the norm, his voice and delivery are crazy, and the melody and beat are amazing.
I was going to say the same thing. There's almost like a reverb on this, and I was so looking forward to Jay and Amber's reaction. The entire album is filled with a lot of really cool tracks; this one has always been a favorite!
This album was one of the best Paul McCartney ever did. My Love is probably my fav song from this album. When I was a kid I’d listen to every song on this album over and over.
To be honest I just assumed it was on that album cuz my dad made a boot leg tape of the album and My Love was on the same tape as the song Band on the Run. lol. My dad made really good bootlegs back in the 70s. I finally tossed the last of the ones I had from back then after the house fire when all that melted. But I got a lot of play off that cassette tape. Paul McCartney and wings made a lot of great music back then
"Another Day" is a Paul Mccartney song that I used to think was a Beatles song. Turned ot, it was supposed to be, but Paul held on to it because there was no room on the last Beatles album. At least, that's how I heard it. You should give it a listen if you haven't yet.
You also need to hear Paul McCartney & Wings’ Jet, Junior’s Farm, Listen To What The Man Said, With A Little Luck and Goodnight Tonight. Talk about versatility!
Deep cut that you'll love from the Red Rose Speedway album with Wings is "Little Lamb/Dragonfly". Lush, gorgeous song with orchestra, great harmonies. I get a little teary eyed every time.
The album Band On The Run was probably Paul MacCartney's best post-Beatles album (Venus And Mars came second), with this track as one of the stand outs. This track was just one of the great songs on that album. So glad you enjoyed it.
Good one. I listened to this on a 45 record when this came out in the in mid-70's. It's hard to add more superlatives to Paul's music and career. When he was with Wings (not the Wings) he tried to put his Beatles past behind him and for a while he was able to. But I'm glad he has come to embrace it in recent years. Many years from now when we are all long gone someone will be playing Paul's music and wondering - how did he do all that in one lifetime.
You should do the video of this song, it's from a special called "One Hand Clapping". The vocals on that are even greater than here, like "Hey Jude" great. Also he plays piano, bass, acoustic guitars and drums on this.
This song reminds me so much of "Lady "Madonna" by the Beatles. It has one of their great piano intros, horns and harmonies. I can't see you having reacted to it and if you haven't it's an absolute must listen.
Two terrific songs by Paul McCartney & Wings from the same year that you haven't hit yet: "Jet," also from this same album, and "Junior's Farm," a great rocker from the same time period. Check these out when you get a chance, I'm sure you'll love them!
The song Band on the Run started the album. This song closed the album. So it was kind of like bookends. This was on the b-side of the Band on the Run single, so it worked for the single too.
Wasn’t it Ringo Starr that said John Lennon had the most amazing voice, but Paul McCartney had 1,000 voices. On 1985 we hear a McCartney voice not heard on any of his other songs. For a long time I thought it was Denny Laine taking the lead on 1985. Great song, like virtually all the tracks on Band on the Run. Thanks for your reactions and commentary.
Paul put out this album when my friends and I ( and much of the youth) were going out and Dancing Every Night! I lived in a Resort Community in the Catskill Mountains and we could hit dozens of Clubs with live music on the weekends and during the week, almost every bar had a DJ. Last call was 4am, which in many places, just meant they turned off the outside lights, locked the doors and no money was allowed to be on the bar. If it was all the Regulars, it meant that "Drinks Were Free" ! Just as the Sun was coming up we would either go to a Diner for Breakfast, or head home for an hours sleep before going to work!Even in the old "Neighborhood Bars" that catered to the Older WWII Generation and Korean War Generation, there would be dancing and singing! The WWII Generation really knew how to enjoy life. They came of age when they did not know if they would live through the next year, so they Lived as fully as they could, Dancing and Singing, Eating and Romancing! If you knew how to Ballroom Dance, the Foxtrot, Waltz , Lindsey etc, these Wonderful Grandmothers would dance all night with you, with their Husband's Permission, as long as you acted like a Gentleman and asked their permission. Prince also did the same with the song "1999" released in 1982. We had to wait a bit longer for the 1999 date to arrive. Wonderful song, and one of my favorites! It's the last song on what might be his best post-Beatles album. If you haven't, do "Backseat of My Car" and prepare to be blown away by his voice at the end of the song!

"Live and Let Die" was by Paul McCartney and Wings, not solo.
The members of New Edition had some success outside the group: Bobby Brown, BBD, Johnny Gill, & Ralph Tresvant.
