The term starter birds makes me so sad. There's no such thing - any bird needs plenty of research plus all of the love and care!

No. I personally own two quaker parrots and an indian ringneck, and I’ve worked with cockatiels and a few budgies. The budgies were by far the most difficult. Of course their bites don’t hurt as much as my medium sized birds, but the training is so much more difficult when they’re so skittish because they’re so little.
@@ris8065 absolutely! I made a video on the subject as well. For example, if someone wanted a macaw as their first bird, that’s great, AS LONG as they’ve done loads of enrichment, physically interacted and been around them, experienced them in one way or another! You don’t get budgies because you want to upgrade!

I want a cockatiel but I have done my research. I watch this channel almost religiously to keep up and up on learning bird training as well as diet and such. I'm somewhere around _two years_ of research.

The worst parrot advise for me was that all the parrots have the same behaviour,from budgies to cockatoos, except the macaws who are "mean and agressive"
I sadly bought my bird from a pet store, and I mean all their advice was bad. But the worst part (not so much advice) was theu wouldn't give me a health guarantee because I didn't buy on of their bird kits. It was a tiny tiny cage with the perches, a bag of seeds and one sad plastic toy. I went and explained how I had my flight cage with natural purches, all these shredded toys all ready! (I've done tons and tons of research before hand) and they denied it because I didn't buy it from them. Luckily my bird is healthy and we see an avian yet every year to make sure! But I just thought that was super awful 😕

Yes petco advice was horrible . Ya know I what I did? Showed them birdtricks video!!! Lol
I bought my bird from Petco, but before I purchased him, they advised me to watch bird tricks channel and get as much information as I could to be sure that this particular bird would be what I wanted. This was over a year ago and I purchased cages and toys and whatever I felt my bird would need BEFORE I purchased. My bird is healthy, happy and loves to listen to music 😁
I can't stand the advice where it's told to leave the bird in its cage for several days or weeks to get used to its cage 😟
The worst advice that I heard is a breeder of Lineolated Parakeets told a potential buyer that in order to make their poop small and firmer is to never feed fresh foods as they don't need it. Lineolated Parakeets have bigger and wetter poops compared to similar sized birds and its a draw back to owning one of these birds. The breeder didn't care about the health and welfare of his birds. He wanted to sell and make money and gave wrong advice.
A case of money over health. And just think. If the bird dies, you may buy another from the breeder. Horrible.
A couple years ago I was asking a breeder for some information over love birds. She said to me to tame the young bird and get rid off "bad behaviours" you ve to put the bird in a so called dark punishment cage if the bird isn't doing what you want. Not for long because otherwise the bird will start to hate you, she told me. In the beginning I believed this story. I am so glad I didn't buy a bird at that time yet. Since I am following your channel I know a lot more although I don't ve a bird yet. Still considering having a bird. But I want to learn and be prepared as much as possible. Thanks for your awesome channel!

The worst parrot advice I've gotten was from my grandma (she doesn't know much about birds). She said "Get your cockatiel a mirror so it won't be lonely," I didn't say no to that, because she's my grandma, but I never got my bird a mirror, and I never will. (:

I own a pet store in Ontario, Canada. I refer EVERYONE that purchases a bird from me to follow your channel. I have been watching for many years and have learned sooooo much. I currently have 6 birds 🐦 🥰. Budgies, a conure, a caique, an African grey, and a hahns Macaw. My birds have a wonderful life thanks to the information you share. We have no trainers, or good avian vets where I live. It makes things very difficult at times. Looking into booking an online consultation very soon :) Thanks for all the amazing information. Looking forward to learning more and more ❤

The worst parrot advice I got was from my local bird store, who told me that an umbrella cockatoo was a great choice for a first-time bird owner :/. Luckily I didn't listen and got a pionus instead :)
I once bought a car and the salesman wasn't able to explain how the combustion engine worked. They just kept telling me what a great car it was. It's almost like they weren't trying to educate me, but trying to sell me something. Crazy, I know.

people often compare the intelligence and emotionality of parrots to young human children. if a toddler was screaming, would you put it in the dark to calm it down??
That was EXACTLY my mother's policy.....all it taught me was to be terrified of the dark until I was in my mind teens. Very cruel way to treat any sentiment being 😒
Depends on the bird, some do feel better in the dark but it's definitly not a first reflex to have

id love to see you show a "sleeper cage" set up vs a play/day cage

I have a sleeper cage for my cockatiel and it is just like how you would set up a cage of that size.
birds don't specifically "need" a sleeper cage... but if you wanted to do one, eg if your main cage is in a room that's always brightly lit and people are up and active late and so on... it's not really different than a normal cage. food, water, toys, perches, etc. it needs to be a place they can enjoy being.
I'm aware that they don't "need a sleeper cage" however I'd still love bird tricks opinion on size # of toys to provide ect. If someone would go that route since they mention it frequently
@@ciaraehall yea, i was just making sure you didn't think you had to have one. if you did wanna go with one, it would generally just be the same size and # of toys, etc.. as a normal "day" cage.

I got laughed at last year when I brought a new sleeper cage for my Eclectus, they were very confused why I had a sleeper cage in the first place. I explained how cage covers can be dangerous and that it was better for my bird to have a smaller cage in a dark room in a quiet area so he can get 10-12 hrs sleep at night, and that his main cage is very large and portable (aviary) so it can go outside or be in a busy area of the house, so it's not idea for a good nights sleep. They truly thought I was strange and had never heard of such a concept.
Fortunately the first bird “store” I ever went to was run by an excellent breeder that required perspective bird parents to visit her store and learn about handling, feeding, cage cleaning, etc. for at least six months before she would sell you a bird. Best thing ever. I’ve run across so much bad advice of the 30 years I’ve had a flock that I could probably write a book. Worst advice, probably was your bird must be on a pelleted diet.

First one. All the "experts" here in Northern Europe say, let the bird be at peace in its cage for the first week or two. What the heck. I’ve had six parrots since the early ’90s, and I’ve never believed in that “advice”. I have opened the cage door always on the first day, usually after night and let them to come out, if they have wanted to. Of these six parrots, all the young birds, four, have come on my hand on the first day without any problems. The two rescued ones took longer before that. I have only one bird now, young Congo African Gray and we are having a great time together!

For a wedding present I took care of their dog for 3 weeks thinking I could bring my birds with me, needless to say the dog (Teddy) was way too focused in on them, so I had to take them back to my place and go back and forth (lost some weight though walking,lol). Love these questions answered sessions, hope you continue them.
I had a breeder suggest I get a Lorikeet. When I told her I didn't want one due to the mess, need for fresh fruit, etc. She said those needs could be fulfilled by her pellets and it keeps their poop whole to decrease the mess. When I told her I used a seasonal feeding system she said the pellets were enough and no fresh diet was needed. She also suggest I clip wings....needless to say I don't have a Lorikeet and I'm in search of a different breeder. So grateful for bird tricks
I love how cockatoos and cockatiels when given a treat, their eyes like "focus" and actualy look at the thing theyre eating. my other prrots do it too but I find that toos and tiels do it more obviously haha

Bondi saying "Hey cutie" is cute. I was reading most of the comments and saying no to all of them. I remember my Mom telling me that the person who sold Tinky to her mentioned getting a mirror. That was totally wrong! That's the only bad advice I remember. I had 4 birds. They were all well behaved and fed various foods in small quantities once in a while. Love your videos Jamie!

I’m really glad I stumbled onto this video today. My sister told me not to let my bird land on my head because of dominance. I’d rather her be on my head because her claws scratch..

Christmas had been a bad time for me as nobody in the house likes the bird. I love my bird and she’s out with me everyday.. because everyone is home they are losing their brains over her screeching.
I’ve been putting her out on the verandah..
She’s super screeching at the moment to because I live on acreage and we have corellas and Sulfur crested cockatoos coming in for the seed in the paddock..
The worst parrot advice I ever got was from my Avian Vet. He told me the best way to handle hormonal aggression was to “ neuter “ my Umbrella Cockatoo. He claimed he had done this successfully in the past. It wasn’t until after my bird died on the surgery table, that he admitted he had only practiced successfully on roosters. This was devastating! It’s been 30years and still cry over the loss of my beautiful Cockatoo.

I've been watching you and a few other TH-camrs for around two years. I adore animals and have a fair few, but still think having a bird is not for me, much as I think I'd love to have one.
I'm one of those people who believes in extensive research before buying a puppy, kitten, chickens, hamster bearded Dragon, you name it, I'll have at least three books on the subject.
Maybe, maybe... once I'm retired I'll volunteer at a bird rescue sanctuary and adopt a bird. Maybe.

Hola from Mexico, I have had all my Parrots for 30 years most from 2 months to me hand-feeding them myself. I bought one of your recipe books "Cooking for Birds" and I saw making bread using Jiffy cornmeal in a box, I bought it. To my shock, SHOCK when I read the ingredients and I do read labels for ingredients as I don't want to be eating sugar or other toxic ingredients, Jiffy has 28% SUGAR! There are other things I have read in the this book that I do not agree with based on my massive food research after my Dobermans (6) died of cancer partly eating kibble it destroys the immune system with all their toxic ingredients (I now make homemade food for my fur kids and of course my Parrots) and I am obsessed for my recent rescue of fur clan and I hope with this post, if you read it, take a look at this book and revamp it completely. Just because a vet told you so, they are normally not trained in nutrition coming out of college to any extent whatsoever, unless they further their education in nutrition and even Avian vets. They suggest inappropriate foods for everyone. In Mexico, I am the vet unfortunately, there are no Avian vets here, birds are expendable period. All my Parrots have exceeded their said life spans, I had a 30 year young Cockatiel, just saying. I love your videos, your training is very helpful, but re-look at your recipe books, please.
A recipe for a type of bread is obviously meant as a treat food, something to be given once in a while. It isn’t meant to be given on a daily basis. In moderation as occasional treats, the sugar in the jiffy mix isn’t going to hurt the bird. Not to mention the very small portion size the bird should be eating makes their sugar intake pretty minimal.

Hi Bondi! Soooo, thank you so much for discussing the spit thing. My 13 yr old insists on giving Piper ( her rescued sparrow) water and food from her own mouth. It makes me cringe with all the mouth bacteria. Fingers crossed she listens to you Jamieleigh! We are working up to a white capped pionus so need to get the basics right before that can happen.
We left Petco on day 1 with our GCC, fleece lined snuggle hut, commercial feed, and only one toy. NO NO NO!

Animals in general (humans included), when in a new environment, learn based on what they experience FIRST. When you’re introducing a bird into your home, it’s a crucial time for them to integrate with you and anyone else in the household as their flock right away, so that they associate YOU with safety and good things. Birds are flock animals, they will instinctively bond with you if you’re the one making their new life easier by introducing them to it in a non-stressful way.
Since everything is new, their entire brain is focused on learning this new environment, and they’re more willing to accept stimuli from outside of the cage than they are when they’ve gotten used to the rest of the environment and they associate the cage with that sense of comfort and decompression from the stress of the new place. Since you removed yourself from the equation, now you’ve lost that natural incentive for the bird to interact with you.
Any time you don’t spend capitalizing on the newness of the situation is absolutely wasted and you’re going to have an uphill battle later on because you failed to take advantage of that critical window of time.

When I first got my baby lovebird on the 2 week of having him. He started having discharge out of his nose. I read to wait about a month until bringing a baby bird to a vet due stress. So I was conflicted about what to do. I contacted the breeder for help. He told me to just use a humidifier and that a truly sick bird just lie listless on the cage floor. Which I knew was a severe symptom of illness. but I also read birds hide their illnesses really well so any symptoms of illness should be taken seriously. So I took him to the vet and fortunately everything was fine but I didn’t want to risk losing him.
Second 1 I love these vids I was late cause I just woke up and realized birdtricks makes a new vid and I give my birds ur seasonal feeding system at 10
Thanks for addressing the mixing species thing. I am SO sick and tired of people mixing pets for views!!. I used to rescue domestic pet rats, and the number of people that would take photos of their cats and rats, or dogs and rats....it was always “hes a sweety”, “they’re fine” or “I’m right here” Like you said, it just needs once, and NO, you are not fast enough to stop things going pear shaped, if they do go bad. It’s just so unnecessary....a huge risk you don’t need to take!!

It also makes me sad that so much bad advice is from pet stores. One time I had a gal trying to sell me nutriberries as a "complete diet." Luckily I knew better and tried educating her that I feed fruits, veggies, and sprouts and couldn't seem to get through to her.
On the other hand having worked at a pet store myself I was always a huge advocate of nutrition, health, and enrichment! Even young parakeets I would give fresh chop to them every morning and whoever bought them never needed to try hard to get them to eat good fresh foods! ❤️ And it taught a lot of people that they eat more than "just seed"

I am so addicted to your channel. I adore birds and love the idea of getting a rescue bird, but realise the commitment that entails, and my lifestyle of travelling for work often would make that super hard at the moment. So I'm satisfying my fascination by binge watching your channel. Thank you. At least I know I'l be really well prepared when I do get around to it, and i'll know better than to listen to any of teh kinds of advice listed here. Keep up the great work.

The worst parrot advice I got was that if my bird bites me, smack him on the beak put him in his cage with a cover on it for 20 minutes! Love all your videos!! Your so amazing and you have helped me with my bird soooo much!
I've heard this one too, I can't even imagine. I've put my grey in his cage after a bite but only to clean up my bloody wound. After I'm done, I always go back and do a step up with him, so he knows there's no hard feelings and I'm not scared of him for biting.

My worst bird advice was actually from the breeder of my parrotlet. I couldn’t get him to come out and start bonding with me so she told me to just reach in and grab him. 3 years later he still hates my hands.

When I adopted my second budgie the vet had clipped his wings and tail feathers (along with random feathers throughout his body) he dropped like a brick. He had no confidence, finally now with training he finally is hopping to me :)
Hopefully as his feathers grow in he will gain more confidence! 🙂

Oh man..I went through hell trying to find a vet to treat my sick Speckled Sussex hen..a “special” vet clinic charged over seven hundred bucks to basically experiment on and torture her. They wanted me to stuff a tube down her, inject a bunch of stuff when they didn’t even have a diagnosis. Ppl see chickens as disposable dinner items. I took care of this poor creature inside, she appreciated being away from the flock, actually, and she knew she was loved and cherished up until the moment she passed. At the necropsy, she was literally riddled with cancer, I spoke with an avian virologist, there are awful viruses other than Marek’s which we have a vaccine for that cause cancers. I had another hen that showed no symptoms at all, but was sitting under the coop one night at bedtime, I convinced her to come out, she knew she was dying, and self isolated under the coop. She passed only a few hours later, no symptoms, healthy weight, no feelable issues. I didn’t have a necropsy done for her, although I should have. It’s so upsetting when they pass..and you get plenty of advice on “knowledgeable forums” like Backyard Chickens about how “humane” it is to wring their necks..it’s disgusting..
I bought my first Conure from Petsmart. I asked the clerk if they could recommend a vet. The clerk told me about a fabulous vet but she was an a$$hole. That’s my vet! I sing her praises daily. On our first visit we spent an hour going over does and don’ts. Best advise ever!!

I love how every comment is about how the pet store didn't educate them about their bird. You mean someone trained to run the cash register wasn't able to offer you up to date health, diet, and training advice? Not to mention a complete run down of the temperament of not only the bird you are purchasing, but any other potential bird that might be more suitable. Shocking! Simply shocking!

Same here...always had furry not feathered pets, but Birdtricks was recommended to me during lockdown.
A few weeks ago I got the advice to spray my birds with water to make them stop screaming. I did it a few times and even tho it worked for a moment, it broke my relationship with my birds so I stopped doing that. It took days to regain their trust😓 I'm so glad I found your website. Thank you so much for your videos🥰 I'm never ever taking any advice from anyone else ever again unless it's from you or a veterinarian.
Ive seen on a facebook group "Give it a mirror" and "Get it a buddy!" No. The buddy one is not always the answer and solution to everything
Wow, i've done some of these things and i'm ashamed to have thought that they would help but i've learnt just from his reactions, what is beset for him. I'm glad to say that i've trained myself to be a better bird owner. I didn't have access to this info when starting out and glad that i've been able to find out some of what I was doing wrong in the past and what i'm still doing wrong from these videos.

Man the no advice really hit me. I've had birds as a kid (really wish my parents were more educated and either said no or taught me) but I have a rescued macaw now. The first week of having her made me feel like you should have a license to keep a parrot and I cannot believe just anyone can fork over some money and get a bird. Blows my mind

A vet I went to for my 3 birds . She told me my cockatiel only needs seeds and don’t need vegetables or anything like that. And she said a piece of lettuce a day is all that’s needed .😭 I don’t think I’ll be going there anymore...

Hello..... awesome video. I received some of this advice however, immediately watching TH-cam videos I quickly changed route... I would like to see more videos on maybe new bird owners taking in birds that flew into their homes (garages, work places, etc) or received from distant family that abused the bird, and choosing to keep and care for them on where to begin and how to know if the bird is aggressive or not and what steps you can take. I would like to thank the person who was selected in the video with comments about veterinary care and not relying on social media or Dr. Google, and for Jamie's response.
Veterinary care costs money, in a similar way to human healthcare - the same equipment, similar tests, similar staff, similar overheads, and (certainly in the UK) the salaries paid are not what the general public seem to think they are. Vets do care about their patients and do not perform unncessary tests just to make a few extra £ or $. Common things are common, therefore that's what will be investigated first, just as would happen if you visited your doctor. Those preliminary investigations, tests and treatment cost money and, as for human patients, there is no guarantee of a diagnosis or successful outcome at that stage. Rather than immediately going for a second opinion because either a diagnosis wasn't made initially ir the treatment wasn't successful, go back to your veterinarian: the next stage of testing/treatment will probably be what the second opinion vet would have done next anyway. Every patient, whether human or animal has unique anatomy and physiology, and will respond individually, unlike a car for example where replacing a part or topping up the oil solves the problem.
The increasing number of "attacks" on vets on social media or in person are driving up the levels of stress and poor mental health in the profession: in the UK veterinarians are FOUR times more likely to commit suicide than the general public. Vets are verbally and sometimes physically abused, some have even received death threats, and veterinarians are leaving the profession they love because of this pressure.
Veterinarians are happy to answer questions and discuss cases so please, if you need any additional advice for your pet, if you require a more detialed explanation of something, if you find the treatment provided isn't suitable/working, or if you think further investigations may be needed, contact your vet. Lets work together in harmony.

I just got two budgies and I was wondering about how quiet should a room be for them to sleep?
I'm worried I make too much noise at night and wake them up accidentally. I also should mention that I do cover their cages at night, which helps in reducing the sound, but as I said before I'm worried that they can still hear everything going on around them and thus not having enough sleep.

I purchased a cockatiel from a lady a few years ago. She legitimately sold my husband a bag of seeds with bugs and webs in it...she said the birds would eat it and it’s good PROTEIN. HAHAHA NO. Then she told him to get the bird used to us, we had to hold it with a towel against our chest (bad advice from your part 1)...WHICH I’D NEVER DO. Then she clipped the bird without asking which is the second time that’s happened to me purchasing birds. If I would have been there I would’ve known better but my poor hubs did not so he came home with the nasty seeds and terrified bird. Needless to say that store is no longer in business...I did feel like we saved that cockatiel and then we rehomed him to a lovely family with kids who had just lost their sweet bird. Thank goodness for this channel!

I got my budgie in a rehoming situation and we were told to give her half a cheerio as a treat, while I understand that cheerios aren't terrible there are better options so we changed it.
half a cheerio doesn't seem like a terrible thing... but you're right, there are definitely better choices!
That is why I love the bird toys I get rom you guys I know I can trust the toys are safe for my feathered kids.

worst parrot advice i received,
1. "give your budgies a nest ASAP so they can sleep there".
2. clip their wings so they won't fly
3. no advise from the seller in terms of diet, cage, taming etc....
...... My budgies and zebra finches were sadly stolen from me
I didn't get new advice from these two videos but I did understand what I've got right. The worst advice I've gotten was from a vet that used a contraindicated medication to treat a problem. They advertised as an avian vet, but their methods were old and outdated...and deadly. I found the correct vet after an emergency in my same area.
I can't wait to get another cockatiel and put this into practice. I'll admit all my previous birds (budgies/cockatiels and a GCC) were on mainly seed diets but now I'm going to be a better owner with all the newer knowledge out there.

Please bare in mind that I'm nearly 39. I did a ton of research before I got my GCC in 2013 sadly he died in an accident. We had budgies from birth in the early 80s and my tiel was in 2001
@@Amy-and-Ozzy That’s good to hear! My apologies, I thought you were a new bird owner jumping into getting a bird before knowing everything you needed to. I’m glad I was wrong and that bird is most likely in a good home/going into one.
I had a vet tech tell me that my budgies shouldn’t be on your sfs and pellets. Needless to say when I told my vet that tech now no longer works there. Because I have the most healthiest and tame birds that he has ever seen. He loves that they all do a few tricks thanks to your budgie and training courses.
I just wasn't warned about needing to transition the diet. I did a lot of reading and watching videos but somehow missed them until I got my bird home. It only ate millet until I went back and got some of his old food a couple days later.
I can take my grey out on my shoulder and trust that he won't fly away... if he gets spooked he just clings to me even harder... I know I need to flight train him because I run the risk of him finally becoming comfortable enough to explore. Working on it.
