Great Symphony, one of the greatest of last end of century. Kalinnikov was really another Ciaikovskij. The second movement is gorgeous, pure dream, but all the symphony is at an incredible high level. Incredibly underrated. But Ciaikovskij and Rachmaninov knew very well how Kalinnikov was talented.

My best friend -- and best man, now deceased -- put me on to this symphony. Did anyone notice Kalinnakov's skillful counterpoint? Like Mozart, Kalinnakov makes it sound easy. Underappreciated in his time, his friend Rachmaninoff helped him financially. Sad that Kalinnakov died just short of his 35th birthday; had he lived to Rachmaninoff age, who knows what masterpieces he would have created.

A symphony that deserves to be performed and heard more often. The finale, like that of George Lloyd's 11th
Symphony ("The light at the end of the tunnel we all hope to see"), makes me want to stand up and cheer!

Kalinnikov has the wonderful melodies like Tchaikovsky without the angst. His music is such joy for our souls. This is an ok recording, but Svetlanov’s is the real deal.

I first heard this symphony over twenty years ago on WBJC classical music station Baltimore Md.. immediately fell in love with the main theme of the first movement. Would love to hear it live but I suspect there’s little chance of it being featured at The Meyerhoff Hall. “Music expresses wordless odysseys.” PWG

This is a truly amazingly beautiful symphony. Thanks for posting. One other video up here of the same work has almost 1 million views; shouldn't this tell something to classical radio stations and people who program at symphonies? It is an exceptional symphony: full of beautiful melodies; sad but lyric 2nd movement that is most unusual. A masterpiece. Osmo V. is a great conductor and this version is very, very good with wonderful sound. Well done!

Bella sinfonía. El primer movimiento es una delicia melódica. Lo que hubiera dado Kalinnikov de haber tenido una vida más extensa. Sucede muy a menudo, lamentablemente, con los grandes genios de las artes

This is a fine performance, though possibly the Ukraine NSO's Naxos version has the most brio throughout despite its echoic (though enjoyable) recording ambience. This LPO slightly slower tempo does bring out the luxuriant cellos and the strings generally in mvt 1 and the grandiosity of the end of mvt 4. As @Bob Cochran suggests, mvt 4 may seem a little tardy at the outset, but it's deliberate, speeding and slowing in various bars, with its accelerandos making a greater contrast than most interpretations. Kalinnov's themes are lovely enough to enjoy at all tempi. The 1993 NHK/Svetlanov reading (...watch?v=3EdnO6vEaHk) is almost a perfect concert rendition. I think one just has to listen to all of them, the Ukraine NSO (their version on YT seems to have a better sound in the 4 separate mvt uploads than the all-in-one upload). and the the Scottish NO (.../watch?v=oiOe72qg2vY&t=136s) are all on YT too, and they all add extra insight into this lovely lyrical work. Along with Dvorak and the Russians, it does have an unmissable flavour of Ives No 1 about it, esp. mvt 1 after 8:10. Overall, this LPO (concert) rendering is very clear and rewarding, so thanks to Musica Universalis for posting it.

Personally I find this turgid. I like the Naxos version and Neemi Järvi's performance with the RSNO (which I heard live in Glasgow many years ago) but everyone else pales into insignificance beside Svetlanov. His direction is flawless and the Japanese musicians play as if their lives depended on it. I'd class it as one of the finest live classical performances ever recorded.

I heard a band transcription of this performed by one of the Alabama All State bands from 1972. The trumpet soloist in that band had the most polished and controlled sound I had ever heard from that instrument. I later mentioned it to a friend of mine who played in that band and he said that trumpet player was a seventh grader. Truly amazing.

A wonderful symphony that should be played very frequently by major orchestras around the world. My only nitpick (I am not a composer), is I think I would have used a clarinet near the end of the first movement (around 13:45) because it is a bit sadder than the English horn or oboe that the score calls for.

@@tidnid1869 Um, yes. Well, maybe not uniformly disappointing. Some pieces are more disappointing than others. In particular, I never liked the saxophone concerto--I've tried and tried. I don't know the 4th symphony--I'll take a listen.
The piece that I like best of his--the only one that I can say is a favorite of mine--is the piano piece on the name SASHA.

@@tidnid1869 Um, yes... Well, maybe not uniformly disappointing. Maybe disappointing in various degrees. I have tried hard to like the saxophone concerto. Not enough classical saxophone. But I find it--like much of this composer--highly forgettable. I haven't heard the fourth symphony, but will give it a listen. Other symphonies? A few good movements, but also mostly forgettable.
