    I just commented on your 2/22/23 video way off-topic, you were talking about nosebands and I was talking about rein chains. And all of a sudden I stumbled upon this video. I love riding in rein chains, I am the only one I know that does. My horse was trained to be ridden in a spade bit. But since I spent my money on the horse I never got a spade bit. I do use a Sliester bit with a roller and we get around just fine.

    I think that the original purpose of rein chains was so that the enemy could not cut your reins and leave you with no control of your warhorse as you rode into battle.

    Can you explain what and how weighted leather reins work? I think it might compliment this video well. Thanks in advance…

      Weighted leather split reins take the slack out of your hands when working at high speeds. I dont happen to care for them because I ride lots of colts and find myself wrestling the reins but they do work well for the guys in the show pen.

    While the chains may not be there originally, to protect the reins from the water, if it does in fact work in that capacity, then it is a true aspect of their purpose. My grandfather was a Bridle man...

      Im not saying they don't. Its just not the purpose. Tell me about your grandfather please.

      @@HorsemanshipAsAnArt He ran away from home at 14 and was hired on the Tejon, where he learned from men like Arnold Rojas. We had a Snaffle in the tack room, so he could show people he knew what one was, but i dont believe i ever saw it go in a horses mouth. I have to say, that i was pleasantly surprised, to see a video of a person claiming to know bridles, have the curb unattached on the left side while hanging up. it speaks volumes that i bet most dont know or catch.

      @@TightwadTodd Im not sure from your statement if you are patting me on the back or calling me an idiot. I have a reason for undoing the curb and I agree with you that most don't know that reason. I sure wish I had known your grandfather Ill bet he had a lot of knowledge to share and some cool stories as well.

      @@HorsemanshipAsAnArt More a back patt'n. LOL like i said, i see videos of people claiming to be bridle wise and they never disconnect the curb. that says to me, they have it too loose, for a spade bit. Any old Bridle horse people i knew always disconnected it before unbridling and never connected it until after bridling. I have a Spade, that was made by my Great Grandfather, on my Grandmothers side, that in my eyes, is the perfect bit. When i was around Bill Dorrance, i used to tell stories about my ole Grandad. after about 2 weeks, Bill asked me, who the hell is your old Grandad? I told him and Bill said, I heard of him. I said to Bill, yeah, hes heard of you too.

    How do you connect the romals to the bit without the chains?

  • @sethwhiteley8247
    @sethwhiteley8247 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    At some point could you explain the proper use of the romel as a tool in training a bridle horse?

  • @lazarooliva5555

    Hey Bret! In the video you mentioned using chains to make a “true blue spade bit bridle horse.” What is the difference between true blue made by wearing chains and the Bridle horse that is trained in the bridle w/o chains?

    • @HorsemanshipAsAnArt
      @HorsemanshipAsAnArt  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you are not using chains the bit looses some feel and signal. The horse learns to get in the cadence of the swinging of the chains and learn to feel the rider better through the chains. Riding without chains the horse can't feel the emotions of the rider as well. I was watching a good friend the other day that has a really nice bridle horse that he cowboys on and shows in big nrcha events. She was cutting out of the herd and knew those rein chains so well that she would close her eye a fraction of a second before the chain hit her. A big time bridle horse learns amazing things from chains. They can darn sure be trained without them but a horse trained with chains feels different.

      @@HorsemanshipAsAnArt thank you for taking the time answer, I know it must be taxing.
      Id like to say that back to make sure I understand. Using chains enables an emotional connection between horse and rider created by the subtlety of the signal.
      Follow up question: how do you determine optimal length and weight of the chains? How much time does it add to the training of a finished bridle horse?
      BTW I purchased your book. Haven’t finished it yet but I think you’ve created something that will transcend generations. It’s on par with Ray Hunts book, “Thinking Harmony with Horses.” Can’t wait to read the next two.
