- Living on a Cowboy Ranch on Manitoulin Island
Our final stop on our Ontario Road Trip was Manitoulin Island! Manitoulin Island is a large island off the main body of Northern Ontario and sits in the waters of Lake Huron. On the island we stayed at Kicking Mule Ranch, a cowboy themed ranch, where we met two ponies! We stayed in old Blacksmith's Bunkie, but there were yurts and tents too! We went to Bridal Veil Falls, Gore Bay, Providence Bay and we hiked the Cup and Saucer trail. All in all, this part of our Canada road trip, and it all felt like a bit of a fairytale! This is definitely what I was hoping for when I moved to Canada!

@@HolyFreakinDragonSlayer Ooh... well it has been a longish transition for me! I went veggie at 7 years old when I learned about Mad Cow Disease in the U.K and why that came about (cheap meat production meant that cows were being fed parts of other cows...which...urgh!) Then between 14 and 28 I ate meat again. I am actually a pretty big meat lover.... high quality meat though, don't get me wrong. I love steak and roast chicken and, I don't know if you follow me on Instagram or not, my job involves a lot of eating .... I LOVE food. I think the reason I stopped eating meat was because I just couldn't reconcile the exchange. Yes, the majority of the meat industry is gruesome, but you are right...there are some ethically sourced ways to get meat. Ultimately what has stopped me eating meat is looking into the eyes of an animal and thinking "can I kill you". I know I couldn't kill a cow, pig, chicken etc so I don't (personally, no judgement) think I deserve to eat one. I DO however, eat fish. Danny doesn't, but I will eat local fish, especially shellfish which I don't feel very guilty about at all. I have had a few instances where I have eaten meat in the past couple of years and I don't judge myself too harshly when I do, but ultimately it is a life choice to try not to. I know if I were living hundreds of years ago then meat would have necessary to survive, but we have evolved and adapted into a much more abundant species that I just don't think it is necessary any more when I wouldn't have the balls to hunt an animal for myself. I'll let Danny speak for himself if he sees this, but that is the full answer of why I personally don't eat it anymore! :)

Manitoulin Island is such a peaceful place and I haven't been since 2015. My parents had a camp out there and I always loved going there. Bridal Veil, the Cup and Saucer Trailer, Gore Bay, Meldrum Bay, and so much more. Loved the video and thank you for brining me down memory lane. Also fun fact Manitoulin is the largest freshwater island in the world.

I’m so glad you had a chance to go to northern Ontario, many Canadians haven’t had the opportunity to get up north and see the beauty.
I lived in Sudbury, which is only 1 hour from Manatoulin Island. My parents used to bring us camping at Providence Bay, where these folks visited. And it was the best times of our lives as kids growing up. My siblings are so grateful for Mom and Dad and the life they provided for us. They have been in Heaven for some time and cant wait to reunite with them in eternity :-) > > >

My father and his family were born and raised on Manitoulin island and the family would go there every summer for vacation and stay at my great aunt's house for three weeks in town!!! This is amazing and brings back so many child hood memories😊

What great looking weather and beer too. Back in good ol' blighty, half the pubs lack beer gardens and the ones that do weather is never ideal. Rain rain and more rain. 😁
It was GORGEOUS weather! We got so lucky! Sometimes beer gardens here are a bit TOO hot, lol! The beer was nice, I do miss cask ale though!

Thanks for the great showcase of Manitoulin...Im a fourth generation Summer resident and it was so nice see some of my favourite areas being highlighted on a cold February covid night! Hopefully will be back in July of 2021. Thanks for the smiles.

Nice to see you had a great time in Northern Ontario. I'm from Sudbury, so very familiar with the areas of your roadtrip. I would have recommended hiking The Crack at Killarney Provincial Park, which is in between Sudbury and Manitoulin Island. Very rugged towards the end, but also very beautiful. But that can always be for another time. It's good to get the word out about Northern Ontario!
Question, and maybe this would make for a good topic for a video, but have any Canadian artists/bands become new favourites since your time here? I find Canada has such a varied musical culture, but so many artists/bands aren't very well known outside Canada beyond the same 5 or so, (Nickelback, Celine Dion, Barenaked Ladies, Anne Murray, Nickelback), so it would be fun to hear about your musical discoveries :)

I have to be honest - that's all Danny! Their are plenty of edited out moments of me saying things like "can't we just actually DO the hike"....guess who was asking to steal his footage when we got home because it looked so nice 🐒🙈🙋!

I would LOVE to.... lets start manifesting the cash! Haha! Honestly though, I do think you can travel on the cheap. As you can see, we live within our means and aren't staying in like 5* places or anything, but we love it!

@@RebeccaFelgateOfficial have you ever been to Salem? Essex street in Salem mass is great! A bunch of little shops around there with great stuff. And if your down for a massage go to Beijing herbal foot spa! There's also a railroad bridge (no longer in use) I LOVE in East Harford, Connecticut but I can't remember what street its off of. If I think about it and find it ill try to let you know.

Just came across your vlog the other day and have watched 2 so far. I have enjoyed both very much. I’ve lived in Ontario all my life (76 yrs) and have never been up to Manitoulin Island. An island within a fresh water lake with a fresh water lake within the island, I think.

We own an off-grid cabin in Kagawong, on the island. Manitoulin is a beautiful place where we plan on retiring to.
Im always torn i want to show off the island (what we locals call it) but i also want to keep it my own piece of heaven. Its like stepping back in time... Everything slows to island time. ❤️

Don't know if you managed to do it but there is a ferry between Manitoulin and Tobermory called the Chi-Cheemaun that is a popular way to get to the island.

I'm guessing the You didn't take the *Chi-Cheeman* to *Tobermory* (the mainland) and check out the sites on *The Bruce Peninsula?* Maybe stop at Wiarton and see if Wiarton Willie was up and trippin around in his little habitat/enclosure?
And taken highway 6 almost all the way back to T.O. as well.

Alberta is the Texas of Canada. Actually I think Calgary, Alberta has the biggest stampede festival in the world. Everyone dress up like a cowboy when the festival arrives. So,you will see more cowboy stuff in Alberta than Texas. Yet, this is not even Alberta. She was in Ontario.

If you like hiking the woods that requires some moderate climbing rather then just straight walking you should visit more places in along the Niagara Escarpment. Since I am from Hamilton I know lots of great places in the Hamilton and surrounding area of the Escarpment, but the entire Escarpment has some amazing places to hike.
Hamilton area hiking I personally love and recommend you and Danny take an autumn day or week end trip to see if you have time; The Devil's Punchbowl (it's beautiful to hike the valley around the bowl when the falls are flowing, and really nice to walk the upper trail when the falls are dry since the river bed at the top of the falls is solid stone and you can walk it like some kind of road made by nature at some places), Lower Chedoke Falls (Upper is nice too but the hiking is more difficult), Dundas Peak which also includes Webster and Tews Falls depending on where you enter to hike (This one is a Provincial Park so you do have to pay to park there), Felker's Falls Conservation Area (it's not a very big place and this one hasn't much climbing but if you do a big hike through the Red Hill Valley trails it's a great place to stop and eat a picnic or just rest), Red Hill Valley which is actually an area of connected trails between parks and conservation's; notable places to hike would be places like The Upper and Lower (C) King's Forest (Note you will see a lot about a place called Albion Falls in this area if you hike it make sure you do not climb any fences or on the falls/rocks off the path, etc the city is super serious about fining people at Albion Falls since it's technically private property the owners let the trail run through and people kept needing to be rescued for getting hurt for climbing on the falls which is expensive so it's now fenced off and monitored closely by bi-law enforcers if you do much more then hike the public trail or look at the falls from the trail)
Ooooh some great recommendations, thank you! I have been to Niagara a few times this summer because I work in the wine-sphere quite often. I know the escarpment is the reason why we're able to get the right climate to grow the grapes. I have hiked Dundas Peak but the falls sound amazing - I especially like the sound of The Devil's Punchbowl! Thanks for the recommendations!
@@RebeccaFelgateOfficial The Punchbowl is really nice. It's one of my regular places for walks since it's so close by to me. There is also a nice little old fashioned market/shop up there (closed in the winter though) worth a stop if you ever go for a walk/hike there while it's open
I haven't heard the term "swimming costume" since I volunteered at a camp. There were some counselors from England there at the time.

Check out Sleeping Giant in Thunderbay. The hike is about 5 hours total. 3 hours up 2 hours down. Down was alittle faster. The view from the Gorge is unbelievable.

How often can one say watching a TH-cam video, hey I did exactly the same trip except we took the ferry to the island which Id highly recommend. We also stayed in the "luxury" teepee at the ranch.
A word of warning, the owner of the ranch has a feud going with the couple that runs the horse riding camp next door.
Hopefully once things is getting better, I’ll plan to go to Toronto later on in my life. I really want to return to Canada.

I have relatives on Manitoulin. Went there I'm the 90s for a family reunion. Don't remember much. I blame the mosquitos and black flies. ( Actually I think it was the 🍺 & whiskey ) LOL. 🍺🍺🥃🥃

Love your videos. If you want a great weekend adventure, this summer drive to Tobermory, 4 hours from Toronto and take the glass bottom boat ride over to Flowerpot Island, you can get off, explore and take a later boat back. Some great hiking and fantastic views. Hope you check it out.
We did that about 5 years ago and we had a blast! We have been wanting to come back... maybe after the pandemic we will!
I was going to suggest that too. I did that after hiking the last 11 Kms of the Bruce Trail into Tobermory. Beautiful scenes from the trail running along Georgian Bay. 😊

We stayed in Ontario (our province) and followed Covid guidelines :) The service industries and tourism industries need us to keep doing what we can - SAFELY - of course! As we're both fit, healthy and very cautious (perhaps I should have shared more footage of us wearing our masks), we decided to get out of Toronto for a bit. I think it's probably more dangerous to walk around in downtown Toronto than it is go on a road trip to sparsely populated areas.
