  • Kia replaced the Optima with the K5, and now offers it in AWD form as part of their GT-Line. We take this version out for a test drive and discuss the competition, the AWD system, and where this fits in Kia's lineup. Join us as we rope in divergent tangents on everything from office printers to wild plants. It gets wonderfully weird.

    I think you guys are way off on this. The car looks great, has way more options at any price point that is competitors other than the Sonata. The drl in real life looks great

    I think I get where Paul is coming from with Kia and their cars like this. There's a market opportunity for Euro / German chassis and engine philosophy coupled with Asian reliability and cost-managed production know-how. That promise is what Paul is rooting for and what he is cheering Kia onward to achieve.

    sounds like these guys have a issue with new kid on the block look with this vehicle. Toyota, Honda, Nissan all look sort of normal and Kia is doing new things and its one of these cars that you will fall in love with it the more you spend time with it. Trust me, I have a 2022 Gt Line and I get compliments and the what kind of car is that it looks awesome! and the K5 name has always been Optima just not here in USA until this model came out to signify new generation of Kia.

    If they don't want to add AWD to the GT, fine, ok. Add an LSD though.

    Paul is right! GM & Ford do this a lot & That’s Why Toyota Corolla, Camry Honda Civic, Accord sell so well! They improve on One Nameplate instead of trying to Reinvent THE SAME CAR WITH DIFFERENT NAMES! Talking to You Cadillac CTwhatever & Ford Contour/Fusion which should’ve just been a Mondeo from start🤦🏽‍♂️👨🏽‍🔧

    I think if they put AWD into the K5 GT, they would be dipping into the Stinger GT line. Similar HP, and too much overlap. The Stinger GT 1 and 2 are their own animal. The the FWD K5 GT isnt necessary when you have the Stinger GT line 2.5 T. Meanwhile I see K5's all over south Florida

    The more I look at the weird trunk/rear window hoop design, the more it looks like the engineers and the designers had an argument and it go so heated that management stepped in and decided that nobody won.

    "How 'bout an Altima"- I love the banter and the brain teasers. This is why your content is top notch.
    Personally, I'd take the K5 over the Altima, for no other reason than who I want to get my money. Kia/Hyundai/Genesis are really trying hard to make good cars. Nissan is really trying hard to become a bank instead of a car company.

    I'm picking up what you're laying down, Todd. Why get the K5 when you can get a stinger? I felt like this for YEARS with Lexus. Why does anyone buy an ES when they can get a 1-2 year old GS for the same price with a CPO warranty? The difference in driving experience was night and day. Yet the GS was cancelled, because people love their lexified camry.

    The kia forte GT is actually a more apples to apples competitor to the civic Si. If you ask me the forte is the better car. way nicer interior and tech, comparable performance, aaaand cheaper.

    You can like a brand and still be down on some of their products. I'm floored by how good the build quality and attention to detail Kia/Hyundai/Genesis puts in their cars. But I've driven an Ioniq EV, and it's awful to drive. Wonderful to ride in, terrible to drive.

  • @thirdpedalnirvana
    @thirdpedalnirvana 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think the reason they don't put the "enthusiast" engine in the AWD system is that I think enthusiasts expect more from an AWD system than just "keep me safe". In my experience, most FWD cars are more fun to drive than most AWD cars, regardless of if they have 100hp or 300hp. A standard haldex-type FWD-based AWD system with no brake vectoring, limited slip differentials, etc, is less engaging to drive. That too-much-throttle-equals-understeer feeling that enthusiasts hate in FWD cars is actually missed, when absent, because at least that attaches the throttle pedal to how the car corners. My guess is that, on top of recognizing that more people are interested in combining AWD with fuel economy than combining AWD with performance, they weren't willing to put forward the engineering effort required to make an engaging and rewarding AWD system, and ultimately the weight of the AWD components would make the big engine option less fun than it is in FWD configuration.

      Out car shopping now and can afford the Stinger [2.5 GT Line] and drove one; it's great. But after driving Sonata N-Line a couple times [cousin to K5 GT] I was knocked out by how good it is, whether at 35K or even a bit more. And I'm a former GTI owner [2017 manual]. Drove it somewhat aggressively, but not 'foot to the floor' crazy. Only very mild - and to me - very manageable torque steer; nothing I couldn't also do with the GTI. Heck, I can even spin the front tires on my AWD Volvo XC40 [fwd biased] if I really work at it and drive like an idiot. The k5/sonata n-line tandem are an incredible value IMO. Likely my next new vehicle.

    The FWD GT is just a burnout machine. Doesn't even have a LSD so 1 wheel just spins. It's useless bc it can't put the power down. Also, Kia dealers in the northeast want $4-5k over sticker for Stingers (even GT-Lines).

    This segment of cars is interesting. TH-cam car reviewers? Of course, they're huge car enthusiasts, that's why they review cars for a living and therefore would prefer sportier over comfort and daily eco cars. I find it natural for them to not like any cars under 250hp that doesn't have sporty, somewhat stiff suspension, because that's what you would expect from car enthusiasts. Viewers on TH-cam? Mostly car enthusiasts as well. That's why we look up and watch car reviews, most of us also prefer sportier, more powerful, stiffer suspension cars, so we also don't think these eco boxes are good. The majority of people buying these cars? Probably don't care to watch car reviews on TH-cam. Those people just care for transportation from A to B. Good fuel economy. Reliability. never goes past 3,500rpm.

    I'm not sorry, but any car that drops the AWD on the most powerful model gets taken off my list by default. I will not support that nonsense from manufacturers.

    • @thirdpedalnirvana
      @thirdpedalnirvana 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The AWD system would only make the most powerful model slower. In general, basic AWD cars (without torque vectoring, brake vectoring, locking diffs, etc) are WORSE to drive in the warm wet/dry than FWD cars are. Given they probably weren't willing to put in the engineering time to build a Quattro or Focus RS style AWD system that shuttles power around when the front wheels aren't slipping, I prefer they didn't give the powerful engine AWD. AWD has become, in the public consciousness, synonymous with "safe", and even people in LA are going to buy this AWD K5 with the small engine and never once use the rear wheel traction. And frankly, if you're an enthusiast and want a powerful car and need AWD, you aren't going to be happy with a FWD-based system anyway, not without some seriously fancy tricks like the Focus RS or Evo, et. al.

    Kia headlights: we took the squiggles from the vinyl decals dealers were applying to new cars in the 80's and 90's and put them in our headlamp assemblies, so when you get in a front end collision the cost of the new headlights means your car is totalled.

    The Kia K5 - Wash your hands thoroughly. Speaking of washing one's hands thoroughly, I owned a 2016 Kia Sedona and, while it was my only Korean brand (ever) I must admit it was a nightmare. Yes, it ran and it felt good when it was under 65k miles but once it topped 85k it started to really rattle and squeak and just felt horrible. Yes, it was a minivan but it was as if someone threw a switch overnight and it went from good (for what it is) to horrid (I don't care what it is). Maybe Kia has come a long way, I hope so, but because I keep my cars to 150k plus and buy them with 45k plus, it would take a lot to get me back into the Kia/Hyundai pool. Yes, I have washed my hands thoroughly of Kia...for now.
