    Agree with Mark, it's a beautiful film. He failed to mention Emory Cohen though, his performance was captivating too.

    I don't think he is expressing himself enough to let us know how he really feels about the movie. Only kidding. Yes, it was a great movie. It was really tough on Saorise because it brought back memories of her family moving to the US and being born in the Bronx. Filming a few miles from where she was brought up in Ireland where she ran into old classmates during the filming was uncomfortable for her since she always wanted to keep her acting business career separate form her home town so that was difficult for her. She was happy to make the film in her Irish accent which she has never done before because she only would do that if it was a real story that had meaning with feelings from the character and was not just an Irish history film.

    Went to see it last night; Mark Kermode is right on the button. The gentleness, the allowing the characters to be themselves and the emotional intelligence is very high. It's brilliant. Go see it!

    What about Emory Cohen? He was great as a young American New Yorker in the 50’s. He was what so many women wanted--a man who loved a woman and would give it his all to build his world around her.
    Given the opportunity he would make a great on screen lover. I would like to see Himin more screen roles like this.

    I agree with everything said in this review. I was lucky to work on this film. I orchestrated Michael Brook's gorgeous score. What Kermode says about the score is spot on is and one of the things I love most about Michael's music. He did such a masterful job at hitting the right emotion at the right time without ever falling into melodrama. The whole film is such a joy. I think I may have even mentioned to John Crowley how the film felt like an old school film in the best possible way. And Saoirse is truly fantastic as is Emory Cohen as Tony.

    This is a truly beautiful film, everything was perfect. The acting is spectacular all-around, especially the glorious Saoirse, Domhnall Gleeson who has had an amazing year with this film, Star Wars, and Ex Machina, the mother, the priest played by Jim Broadbent, her young Italian boyfriend, etc etc etc. The story is old-fashioned in the BEST way (as in people are people with good and bad and not just bad as is usually the case in today's films -- also the characters develop in realistic ways), the production design is gorgeous, and I just can't rave about it enough truly. My wife sobbed like a baby during this film. It really is such a beautiful film.

    As someone who has grown up in Co. Wexford, done the live abroad thing and recently come home again, I felt like I was watching what it's really like.
    Living abroad is all fun and games till you get that call where theres a funeral happening and you're too far away to attend.

    One thing I NEED TO KNOW: what was the thing that was on the center table in Bartocci's? At first I though it was a cash register, but I have never seen a cash register look like that. i even tried searching it up.

    It is a great film It's one of those that you will watch again and again in the years to come. It's one of those that if you come across it while channel surfing you will stop and watch it to the end regardless of where you pick it up. When Mark mentions the music, remembering that scene brought tears to my eyes. It's a must see. And, if you collect movies it is a, "Must Own".

    Excellent review Mark! I love "Brooklyn" also and think Saorise is brilliant. This is jone of the finest ensemble casts put together where every character is memorable. The story is timely in terms of the immigration sags and the value of immigrants. My one disappointment/concern is why it is not garnering the attention it deserves from theater goers. Go see it people.

    While I really did enjoy the film, I found it somewhat underwhelming. The film was truly engaging, funny and heart-warming in equal measure. But I really can't shake the feeling that after just one watching of the trailer practically the entire plot of the film was given out, and I feel there could have easily been more of the story to tell. The only part of the film I didn't already know after seeing the trailer was the final 10 minutes. Maybe not a fault as such with the film, but the trailer (that said I couldn't think of a way to advertise the film without it, but still)

    • @SkySpiral8
      @SkySpiral8 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree the trailer was too revealing, but also, knowing the plot beforehand doesn't take away the value from a high quality movie

  • @northernmaninyorks
    @northernmaninyorks 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I enjoyed the film - interesting subject, very well acted. A bit slow overall. I really don't like the crystal cleanness which clouds reality. 1950s Ireland and Brooklyn just would not look like that. The Atlantic crossing scenes were very staged too. Forgive my nit picking and see it soon!
