- Yamaha has taken the wraps off the eagerly awaited YZF-R9 at a private event in Los Angeles. While stressing the R9 is not a replacement for the YZF-R6, it’s hard not to draw those conclusions given this is the company’s new supersport machine.
It will retail for a very tasty $12,499 MSRP in the U.S., making it an extremely competitive offering-it’s only $900 more than the twin-cylinder Aprilia RS 660, and comes in some $650 less than the Suzuki GSX-R750, a machine that has not seen an update since 2011.
The R9 is powered by the same 890cc CP3 inline three-cylinder motor that resides in the MT-09 and MT-09 SP, although it will have different ECU mapping and tooth teeth less on the rear sprocket for taller gearing.
All the usual electronics are there in Yamaha’s Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T), six-axis IMU, nine-level traction control, three-level wheelie control and slide control, lean angle-sensitive ABS and Brake Control, four power modes, five ECU modes in Sport, Street, Rain and two Custom modes, two-stage engine brake control and, Back Slip Regulator, up and down quickshifter, launch control, Yamaha’s Variable Speed Limiter (YVSL), full LED lighting, smartphone connectivity and cruise control.
The R9 uses a model-specific gravity-cast aluminum frame Yamaha says is the lightest they’ve ever created for a supersport model with the swingarm taken from the MT-09. Suspension comes in the way of fully adjustable KYB forks and shock at the rear with a very handy remote preload adjuster.
Yamaha’s finally ditched the Advic brakes and gone with a full Brembo set-up in the Stylema four-piston monobloc calipers and radial master-cylinder, metered by Cornering ABS and Brake Control. You can also turn the ABS off at the rear when you head to the track.
Aesthetically, the R9 borrows heavily from the R1 with some fairly beefy winglets up front and a wider front fairing than on the R6. The seat unit is also a model-specific unit, it’s design a mix of R7 and R9 aesthetic.
Yamaha will thus be the third machine in the supersport category to feature a three-cylinder motor along with MV Agusta and their F3 800, and Triumph with the Brit’s Street Triple 765 RS. Fellow Japanese brands Honda, Suzuki and Kawasaki are staying loyal to their four-cylinder ethos with the CBR600RR, GSX-R750 and ZX-6R, respectively. Only Ducati races in the supersport class with a twin-cylinder machine.
The new 2025 Yamaha YZF-R9 will be available in Team Yamaha Blue, Matte Raven Black or Intensity White/Redline, and will begin arriving to dealers in March for $12,499 MSRP.
When I owned the older FJ-09, I thought this engine would make a wonderful real-world sport bike. This machine is several levels fancier than I expected. Should be good.
Absolutely gorgeous! Thank you, Yamaha!
It's actually quite a spunky little thing. Very pretty
Proofs in the porridge 😆 Goldilocks and the 3 bears. We have had too much not enough and now JUST RIGHT 👏🏼 bravo Yamaha fantastic sportbike for the 21st century.
Been waiting for this ❤
Yeah, can't wait to get on it!
Love the R9
What do you mean rear pegs should flip up? They do flip up, they flip up flush. I’m lost on that.
I meant the bracket holding the footpegs on. I would have liked them to flip up and sit flush under the seat like they do on the XSR900
looks like someone stayed up late for this :)
Anyone knows when they will give this R9 to media / youtubers / motosport journalists to test ride it?
Does it have RAM Air System..?? or is it like R7, at the back of engine, under the seat.
Sorry, no ram air system.
@@cyclenewsThank you for answering 👏👏
what..?? seriously.... 🤷🏻🤕💀 @@cyclenews
@@AST4EVER Just get GSX-R 750. Faster, better handling same price. Or used Kawi H2 much faster and more comfortable
nice a 900 that performs like a 600. a fz with race plastics...so new and revolutionary woo
@@grimzop3146 it’s an entirely new chassis and platform.
Peak hp wise, the 09 can hang with liter bikes to 100. 2.7 to 60mph
@@bradleysodee5221 like I said, its basically a 600. Stock 600 run with liters up to 100mph i got a 1st gen r6 with only a 520 conversion +2 -1 that will run 1k up to 100 no problem. I know My 07 R1 is the competitor so its not bias. and to design a 900 to run not even a second faster to 60 than a 600 is not aww factor, again this is just banter. I am not trying to argumentative.
@@grimzop3146 yeah I understand I just think people will be very suprised with it, makes almost 50lbs torque at 2,000rpm. Pulls much harder out the gate then any liter bike I’ve had but of course it’s the triple plus shorter gearing.
Yeah the torque is much higher.
this cost 20k AUD in the US but 23.2k AUD in australia this bike is not cheap its like 6-7k AUD more then the Ninja 636 which will have more hp then the R9
Yes, Australia gets screwed every time with new bike prices. Too many import taxes. Aussie riders are correct in thinking they're hard done by, but it's not Yamaha's fault. Talk to the gov'mnt.
looks like some AI generated trainwreck, but I’m sure the performance will be spot on
Roll on next year for a test ride.
Absolutley.
I want the R6 back 😭 come on Yamaha bring it back please
Where there be a heated grip accessory does anyone know?
R6 wheels ?
I feel like a gsxr750 is still a superior bike. The big stick is lack of ABS. Dont really need other tech at this price/power point.
Agree, but crazy that it has a hard time in MotoAmerica against the Ducati V2 and R6.
@@crypto1300 was there balance of performance at play in that series?
@@crypto1300 It's all to do with the balancing rules. If they were able to be let off the leash the Ducati would have 10 more HP than anyone else and just walk away with it.
@@abracing199 You dont really need abs...
@@KapitanPisoar1 for actual street riding I would 100% want ABS. On a track only bike obviously not.
It's nice but still disapointing HP numbers and you would think that it would weight less than 430 wet that's bascially an R1 weight .. Come on this should be under 400 lbs
Yes, give us the reduced weight or some extra hp over MT09 but we get neither. Yamaha looking at profitability over keeping/existing gaining/new customers. In US just get 150 hp GSXR-750 for same price and better handling to boot
You won’t even used all that HP 😂 u won’t even go pass 100 mph calm down. This got better setup then the base R1 for 12k msrp
How tall are you
6'1". I fit on it just fine
@@cyclenews do you think as 5'5 I'll handle well in MT-09 or r9 as my first bike?
Be honest though Guys the price isn’t bad for what u are getting their because to me the new R6 was over priced
Yamaha : well give you a YZF R9 for the price of a brand new 2007 YZF R1, too bad you weren't shopping in 2007! We give you less for more $$$. Enjoy!
Considering an R1 now costs $18,999, this is excellent value. Nothing costs the same as it did in 2007. It's nearly $1000 less than the GSX-R750 and has way more tech.
R1 today is more extreme than almost anyone needs. In the real world this will be a great bike. If you have ever owned a triple sportbike you will know it is a great compromise.
Brand new bike and still lower MSRP than GSXR-750 which is its natural rival.
It will be very competitive in WSS too.
BTW, pitting an '07 R1 against this bike in a track test might be surprising depending on the track. Less power but more electronics.
@@sburns2421 Good idea! The trouble will be finding a decent condition 07 R1. Most have been ridden to death. That model R1 is one of my all-time favorites. One of the best looking bikes Yamaha ever made IMO
mini bike
People without money to buy shit are being negative to such a beautiful bike
I’m sayin the fz09 and ofc mt are amazing bikes this bike will be fantastic
117 HP 🤮🤮🤮🤮
Winglets on a 100 hp bike , lol
It's laughable having them on a 200hp bike too. For the street they're completely impractical and more a statement in fashion. Also just another part to pay for during any drop.
117hp* same as the r6, but i mean i know reading is hard for you little buddy
yeah wish they would have a delete kit or do something like Zx-10r wear they are internal
meh
This is NOT a supersport. This is MT09 in a supersport dress.
So Triumph Daytona 675 is not a supersport? MV Agusta F3??
define supersport bud
@@nihvlYh they are super sport bikes. But this is not as it hasn’t been designed to be one it’s meant to be less aggressive and more user friendly than an outright super sports bike
@nihvl those are sport bikes? The street triple is based on the daytona not the other way around
The sport bike world is changing. Embrace the change. The past is epic but the changes are exciting.
