Back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s 4 cylinders were the norm because with the technology at the time it was the most reliable way to make power but with todays technology we can make smaller more efficient engines that make just about as much power. Perfect example is the 890 Duke R LC8c, with only two cylinders it makes just as much power as an R6, sounds better and has almost double the torque. Smaller engines with the same power means lighter bikes that’ll be better handling and better for everyday riding which should be the market target for companies. The hyper bike market is not gonna keep motorcycling alive, regular, average riders will.
I own a Daytona 675r and had my friends Duke 890r for a while because he was at the hospital for a bit and as much as I love my Daytona, the 120ish hp naked bikes are the most fun I’ve ever had.
50% more torque, actually. But also 50% less RPM. It's really all about gearing because if they had the same weights and the same top speeds in each gear (meaning gearing compensated for RPM), both 117hp or whatever bikes should accelerate evenly at all speeds. Power to weight+Gearing and for speeds over 30-50mph, power to drag. That's what makes a vehicle fast.

Triumph Sprint 1050 3-cylinder rider here, very stoked considering 600s are out and 3 cylinders sound the coolest. Been waiting for a sport version of the mt09
Not just that, most riders with more than 70kw can probably ever get close to pushing their bikes. never had more respect for a rider than when a bmw 1150GS with pillion and fully loaded bags gapped me through the mountains while maintaining perfect lines and no lane cutting. You buy a bike for the corners, not the straights.
The R9 looks like a great bike, but being a Ducatisti, my next bike will probably be the new V2. I think you are spot on with the way "SuperSport" bikes are heading and its hopefully going to make for some interesting racing and inspire the manufacturers to continue their sports bike development.
"cant pass emissions" yet honda has a 2025 cbr600, kawi has a 2025 zx636, and suzi still sells the GSXR600. i love yamaha but disappointed. if they really wanted to they could have sold the R6... lets not Bullshit ourselves here
They could of, but the r&d required, On top of all the testing needed for every single market.... all for a bike that no one was buying..... why would Yamaha do it? It makes sense for Yamaha, and the r9 will sell
@ plus R&D on a brand new bike with a brand new engine is a lot more expensive the a a machine and engine that already exist and just needs refining. So I do really follow your point
@LucasSi919 nobody was buying the r6, that's why. It's the same reason Honda killed the CBR 600 in 2021. They only brought it back this year. Same reason Suzuki and Yamaha have killed the litre bike in other parts of the world. I don't know if you've looked at the emissions of the r6, but it's flat out terrible. The rework required probably far outweighs the benefit for how many they'll sell. It's alot easier to justify it for an r9, one because they have to for being able to race it, but two, it's gonna sell like crazy
Being a former Mt-09 rider from 2021 it really is cool to see an R9. I guess depending on the track, either can be stronger. I’m by far an expert but have ridden both. Top speed R6, torque MT-09. It would fun to watch a match up in different ways.
Wish you saw the new panigale v2 before you recorded this video. The r9, 990 rcr, pani v2 are all so similar in power now. Based on how the manufacturers talk about them it seems they were all built with street riding in mind also. They also all claim to be starting the new era of supersports lol. People hate them, but these are the options being handed to us nowadays.
I think it seems like everyone hates the new era SS, but it’s probably because the few are vocal about it. I own a SS950S. I chose it over a Panigale because of riding position and the SS having more street manners. These types of bikes make sense for those of us that only have time for spirited weekend rides near-ish to the house .
I absolutely love wringing out my ZX4rr. I get the twin and triple engines, but they don’t have the excitement that a high rev four has. Torque is completely overrated
Great vid. Putting a whole line of bikes in perspective in relation to each other. You gotta know a lot to do that. Great job. I love the percentages as to how much is racing or street. This is a great vid and one of your best.
In British Supersport the 600’s still win. Honda has a new cbr600rr which is what I would buy if I was still a rider. I never got on with big twins, although the Ducati 749 I had was good. I’d have an 848 if I was going that route.
Conceptually the new supersport category will be so fun to ride and way better than in line 4 cylinder, the only problem they have is that generally they look like shit, from wings to chinese-oriental design, oh man freaking terrible .. I miss the design of old supersport bikes (early and mid 2000s, even something from 90s). We desperately need a mix of both things
Waiting for Kawasaki to follow up with a ZX9R based off the Z900. Not because I want it. But because the 900cc class seems to be the way the supersports are going. R9, 990 RC R. So why not?
As a Z900 rider, they’ll need some R&D. The engine is great, butter smooth and has a plateau flat torque curve. But the gearing is hilariously short, and it needs to lose a few lbs…
@ with weight seeming to be a track only concern and that concern being an afterthought for manufacturers (marketing be damned), I’m sure they’ll say it’s 5% lighter, 15% stiffer and not really bother with much else.
Brother did u even watch the video lol? They already have a 1000 inline 4. And in the supersport class inline 4s have to be limited to 600 and they already have a 636. Triples and twins are allowed to compete at the supersport class with 850-900cc because they have less cylinders. Hence why they r being made in those ccs. There is literally no reason to have a 900cc inline four from kawasaki. The z900 engine makes less hp then the 636 too. Its trash
r6 squid here, i love the fact thyere making some cool new bikes but i do love my r6 and ill rig=de it till i total it or get a sweet deal on an r1 or mt10
They all know the inline 4 is maxed out so they must introduce something else; Much like the 2 stroke dirtbike. They introduced the 4 strokes that have much more power. It just takes time. I'll keep my k7 600 and have fun blasting that around and having fun.
Inline 4 is da wae, was looking at a newer bike for my next upgrade but ended up buying a low mile 08 fz6, those inline 4 hogh rpm screamers are just something else
This bike is made for people like me who want to track once in a while and mostly street for fun. Definitely my kidn of bike being not super aggressive position.
Emissions is not the problem. The manufacturers used to race bikes they spent a ton of money developing for the market; now, they race bikes they spend a ton of cash developing and wonder why people aren’t spending 70% more on a ten year old motorcycle with flashy new fairing and lights.
I'm getting one, a R9, it looks great. + The typical inline 4 sounds mad boring these days. The extra revs and intake will make that cp3 sound even more mental.
If you’re talking about track that makes sense, however road wise? Not only is the R9 going to be more reliable but also it’s not going to be geared towards track only specs, as the Panigale, well Italian bikes speak for themselves man, wouldn’t surprise me if you have an oil leak in the first 2 months of ownership.
@lofee.r7 Not wrong but the concept of r9 imo is geared more towards track than road especially compared to Striple RS, and I can get a Striple for heaps less money, which is also gonna be heaps better for road, or get literally anything that isn't brand new for track for like 1/3rd of the price unless I got a Panigale (why would you ever get a brand new bike for track), even a track r1. I seriously doubt the r9 in Aus is going to do as well as r7 because its whole concept is designed to trick newbies with tiktok brains, it's insanely overpriced, and it's a downgrade from everything in its price point for track. So its product placement in Aus is a luxury product with less quality than triumph yet costs more, just so the buyer can look at American social media and feel good about themselves. The fact that bikes are getting more expensive yet worse is insulting, and it raises the price of second hand bikes.
I see the motorcycle industry following in the same footsteps as the car industry… I feel like in the near future we’re gonna see smaller motors that are supercharged or turbocharged rather than seeing larger displacement. They already are trying this with Kawasaki with the 400cc inline 4, while it’s not boosted it’s still the same direction I think they’re heading in.
Never thought I’d say I am glad to be older. Growing up with CBR600F2s, YZFs, ZX6 and the good old FZR in 600cc for beginners bikes(some had FZR400s). Everyone wanted to race WERA and we had a blast. AMA getting bought by NASCAR and the stretched and slammed crowds kinda killed it. People got tired of being harassed and would never be near the squids. Racing got way too expensive and track days shot up because of track insurance and the lack of riders.
I’m very lucky to have both (kind of) a cbr600 f3 that I can scream the nuts off (not R6 or zxr400 territory but still fun) and a Ducati super sport 950 which is much faster and far superior to my 600 in every respect, I’m 61, been riding since I was 16 and I still can’t get away from revving out a 4 cylinder bike to within an inch of it’s life ! 😀😀
@philipthody5007 I'm 48 and the same way. I wished I had my old F2 or F3. I did keep a R6. It's still fun. Carbed bikes are still fun. Especially win flat slides and pipes are added 😆 🤣. V-twin sport bikes are still my favorites. There is something soulful about older analog bikes.
600s have their own purposes so do 1000’s. Nothing is going to replace also realize that even if brands stop making them cause of “emisson regulations for motorcycles” (even though cars are the real issue) we can still buy used ones you know? 600s are perfectly in the middle between something like an R9 and liter bikes
The KTM ‘990’ is actually 947cc. The great thing about next gen rules for supersport is there are no strictly defined rules for displacement. Instead it’s HP, weight and other factors. So the 955cc Ducati is severely retuned so that the very well hopped up 599cc R6 can still be similar in terms of peak hp output. The KTM could certainly race if they would get it homologated. There’s nothing in the rules keeping it from being raced.
It's dawned on me recently the euro5 is good for the future - the new euro5 bikes aren't quite as good, but they are very good.... And with going the route of more displacement and lower compression means longer life engines.
Unfortunately for Yamaha “pretty damn sporty” isn’t the standard set over the last few decades for proper supersports…the distinction between sport and supersport is not supposed to just be marketing hype. These are supposed to be a class of proper homologated race bikes. Losing that is a tragedy imo. Nothing wrong with the R9…but losing this special category of bike is surely a loss.
Basically it’s a katana not an actual homologated supersport. Recognizing this distinction is not in any way supposed to suggest that 600 & 1000cc supersports are anywhere near ideal for the road, that was never the point, in fact quite the opposite…most of the appeal was that these were proper track machines that we the few insane enthusiasts who chose to do so, COULD enjoy on the road. Back in the day we had proper lineups from Yamaha and Honda etc. we had the r6 but then we also had much softer “sport bikes” that weren’t trying to be super sports but were sporty road bikes. Apparently in 2024 manufacturers want people to pick ONE option of the two and if the one you chose is a super sport then you’re SOL
Modern super sport where Ducati can bring a (throttle limited) 955 to compete with 600cc bikes. Ducati's dominant in wssp, it's powering less superior rider to title fights in moto America
Damn when did Yam record this video? New V2 was announced like 3 days ago. Tho I understand making the script, recording and editing takes more time than that so, makes sense. So my comment is pointless😅
Im neither, im one of those noobs who just bought a 400x and is watching this new era of sport bike unfold and is planning his next bike purchase slowly and carefully once the dust settles and a clear winner arises. I say we let Yamaha and Triumph duke it out while Ducati gets their shit together for the final boss battle.
Mt09 and r1 is the best combo to have if you can afford two bikes. The r9 feels like a half baked supersport. Either have the aggresive position of a real supersport while having a comfy naked but if you cant have both i get why the r9 would be an amazing choice.
As a Harley rider who recently sold his mt09 of 5 years I’m regretting it. The r9 is one thing & one thing only. A faired version of the cp3 Yamaha owners love. Not any form of replacement. I’m ordering an r9 no doubt.
Ugh, really? Because all the used 600's I see near me have absurd prices on them. New they cost a fortune, and, if you want to race or are building a track bike, the 600 is still one of (if not the) top choices. They are very rarely available in my area, and, when they are, man, they are expensive!!
Hope the insurance isn’t too expensive to see if I can upgrade from my trident 660. I really like the way this one looks but want to sit on it first to see if isn’t too sporty 😂.
The inline 4 remains nice because of the balance it has. With counterweights to compensate for the secondary imbalance, it features the least likely engine configuration to rattle to pieces when you wring out the throttle. That being said, it's really only suited for the track + due to the greater amount of pistons, fuel economy reduces exponentially (the tiny gaps between piston and cylinder wall are lost volume) Then again, do we buy motorcycles for their practicality?
As a MT09 rider I believe that engine etc in a sport bike will chew up and spit out R6s. With a full fairing and sport bike ergonomics that 3 banger will run at least 165 mph to 170. It will do it without all the drama of winding out little 600!! My MT09 with just a little aerodynamic wind shield will drag my old fat behind to 144 mph. I still have one gear left
The world’s developed countries’ governments keep making emissions stricter for the behaving countries, and basically ignore the fact that India and China and Russia spew out so much omissions that what the clean countries do hardly even matters. Very sad.

I still ride a 1999 Ducati 900 SS ie and it is so much fun to ride in the corners... its only 80 hp 😉
Nice!!
I ride an 83 Yamaha TT 600, 1991 Ducati 851, 2000 Banshee, and a 2015 V-rod Muscle.. That SS will click off just as fast a lap as a 1000 XYZ sport bike on most of the small local tracks.
A good man has to know his limitations...
Triumph Sprint 1050 3-cylinder rider here, very stoked considering 600s are out and 3 cylinders sound the coolest. Been waiting for a sport version of the mt09
Most riders who cry about the "death" of 600s don't/hardly ever do track days nor can ANY of them push it to the limits.
So? Didn’t know you had to ride WSBK to enjoy a bike…
Had two R6’s - Already put my deposit down for the new R9 - can’t wait to take delivery of my R9 from the first allocations
Im not really a track person so I’ve been waiting for the r9 so I can upgrade from my r3 🙌🏾
Just gonna cruise right past the R7.
Same here, happy the R9 came out because i did not like the R7 and was going to get a cbr600rr
@@neonsheep3358 Yupp 🤷🏾♂️😂
@@TheOriginalJadolph bro same bc I liked the under tail exhaust on that one but the cbr just looked outdated to me 😅
@@Kiidomaru fr especially with europe having a newer version of the cbr!
Ducati's new V2 Panigale looks AMAZING! Usable 126hp with Termig pipes. Much lighter stock than the R9 as well.
The R9 looks like a great bike, but being a Ducatisti, my next bike will probably be the new V2. I think you are spot on with the way "SuperSport" bikes are heading and its hopefully going to make for some interesting racing and inspire the manufacturers to continue their sports bike development.
Glad I got my first R6 2 years ago. 2007 r6 no fancy rider assists I love it. I’m starting to do trackdays with it now
"cant pass emissions" yet honda has a 2025 cbr600, kawi has a 2025 zx636, and suzi still sells the GSXR600. i love yamaha but disappointed. if they really wanted to they could have sold the R6... lets not Bullshit ourselves here
They could of, but the r&d required, On top of all the testing needed for every single market.... all for a bike that no one was buying..... why would Yamaha do it?
It makes sense for Yamaha, and the r9 will sell
@ for the same reason Honda, Kawi and Suzuki did it?… lol
Insurance doesn't help as well. I'm 50. Bought a 2000 R6 last year. As soon as they hear or see R. Blacklisted. Many will not insure them.
The tech on this bike outshines all other 600 bikes. I’m currently on a 2019 zx6r and want the r9. 2024 zx6r cost same price for less.
The new V2 has I think 30 more horsepower.... (correction, I was wrong, oof, 120 thats ass)
@ the old one did.
The new V2 only have 120hp
@@cyborg2196 you are correct, double checked it, thanks!
I absolutely love wringing out my ZX4rr. I get the twin and triple engines, but they don’t have the excitement that a high rev four has. Torque is completely overrated
If you believe that you’re not much of a “rider”
Great vid. Putting a whole line of bikes in perspective in relation to each other. You gotta know a lot to do that. Great job. I love the percentages as to how much is racing or street. This is a great vid and one of your best.
So... bikes are getting shittier.... that´s sad
Its more that most motorbike riders are over 50 years old and most bikes are now made for old people.
How so?
In British Supersport the 600’s still win. Honda has a new cbr600rr which is what I would buy if I was still a rider. I never got on with big twins, although the Ducati 749 I had was good. I’d have an 848 if I was going that route.
You’re damned active uploading these days👊👍😊 love it🥰
Conceptually the new supersport category will be so fun to ride and way better than in line 4 cylinder, the only problem they have is that generally they look like shit, from wings to chinese-oriental design, oh man freaking terrible .. I miss the design of old supersport bikes (early and mid 2000s, even something from 90s). We desperately need a mix of both things
R6 for life!!!
It's a new age. The golden age is over.
Ironically the Z900 engines roots date back to the ZX9R lol .
Would be cool to come full circle like that.
Doubt it because they sell the ZX6 still.
Its trash
It already existed in the late 90s early 2000s.
Would be nice to have an on track comparisson between a stock r9 and a stock r6
My 765 Daytona LE is going to be fun on track with these new bikes. It’s all coming together….
The 800 cc class is going to be a nightmare...so many different bikes with so many restrictions is going to be tuff to stop cheating.
The fact that the value is there is wild to me. My 4RR MSRP'd in 2023 higher than this big triple.
Really excited to see this at the YCRS.
I love that you could say the car enthusiast market is just miatas with a straight face 🤣I applaud you sir
r6 squid here, i love the fact thyere making some cool new bikes but i do love my r6 and ill rig=de it till i total it or get a sweet deal on an r1 or mt10
I'll stick with my little m50 for now. Comfort is king!
It has nothing to do with emissions those in control don't want fast bikes affordable for the average person.
Motorcycles are regressing😢
AMOGUS
SUS
They all know the inline 4 is maxed out so they must introduce something else; Much like the 2 stroke dirtbike. They introduced the 4 strokes that have much more power. It just takes time. I'll keep my k7 600 and have fun blasting that around and having fun.
I ride my RN22 and be superior against the R9, and I'm gonna love it.
So now we have a lot of 900 cc Supersport
R9
GSX-8R
KTM 990 RCR
New Panigale V2
Got to look at an R9 last Thursday. Pretty nice although we couldn't touch it. Don't know how it feels.
Emissions is not the problem. The manufacturers used to race bikes they spent a ton of money developing for the market; now, they race bikes they spend a ton of cash developing and wonder why people aren’t spending 70% more on a ten year old motorcycle with flashy new fairing and lights.
R9 for the daily. R6 for the track. R1 for the Sunday morning blast to make you feel alive. That's how I'm seeing it.
i need a blast every weekday morning to make me feel alive before i get to my dead end job, thats why i use r1 for daily commute 😉
I think the r9 is gonna be what people expected the r7 to be.
Love verity thats why the daytona 200 is fun to watch
Im pretty excited to see what this 900 segment turns out to be
Love the R9 offering. Disappointed to hear the New Ducati V2 is way down on power v. last gen, even with the big weight loss.
I'm getting one, a R9, it looks great. + The typical inline 4 sounds mad boring these days. The extra revs and intake will make that cp3 sound even more mental.
In Australia: R9 will be $3000 more than Striple RS. R9 will also cost more than a near-new Panigale V2. Yes, the 160 hp one.
The change that's happening in the supersport is likely for the best, but I won't say I won't miss the i4 engine.
I'll be happy when I get my RS660 and my RSV4 for "those certain days"
I see the motorcycle industry following in the same footsteps as the car industry… I feel like in the near future we’re gonna see smaller motors that are supercharged or turbocharged rather than seeing larger displacement. They already are trying this with Kawasaki with the 400cc inline 4, while it’s not boosted it’s still the same direction I think they’re heading in.
They can get my 600 and 750s from my cold dead hands
3 cilinders way to go. Much more character, more fun, less weight, less space. 900cc is a great place to be. Yamaha leads the way.
These outros keep getting crazier 😂😂
600s have their own purposes so do 1000’s. Nothing is going to replace also realize that even if brands stop making them cause of “emisson regulations for motorcycles” (even though cars are the real issue) we can still buy used ones you know? 600s are perfectly in the middle between something like an R9 and liter bikes
Can’t wait to hear your take on the new Ducati v2s with the new engine!
I see the R9 more of a replacement for the R6. Just a little heavier. I like it. Yamaha managed to even make it sexy.
I’m actually looking into upgrading from my 2017 R3 to a new R7
The R7 sucks..and the R9 does also
The street triple 765 rs set the tone they just took fairings off it. I own one it’s a super sport with handle bars.
The fact that emissions on motorcycles is such a issue sucks like how much mileage does the average bike get every year like its no fair
Damn when did Yam record this video? New V2 was announced like 3 days ago.
Tho I understand making the script, recording and editing takes more time than that so, makes sense. So my comment is pointless😅
That was already 8 Days ago. At least here in germany we had this Information on the 2. Nov. Should not take that long to make the Video...
2024 zx6r all day
I’ll stick with my R6 and my ZX-10R. I want a V4 Ducati next. I like their R-model, but I’ll take an S.
Ain’t no r6 brother
I prefer aggressive riding position of the R7. It disappoints me that the triangle is more relaxed on the R9
👍 innovation is always welcome!
Bro is preaching 🫡🫡I'm excited for the future of super sports
Mt09 and r1 is the best combo to have if you can afford two bikes. The r9 feels like a half baked supersport. Either have the aggresive position of a real supersport while having a comfy naked but if you cant have both i get why the r9 would be an amazing choice.
I feel like after this video, I'm going to have to disown Papa yam
You haven't seen the new Ducati Panigale V2 unveiled at EICMA this past week? No more Desmo valves.
As a Harley rider who recently sold his mt09 of 5 years I’m regretting it. The r9 is one thing & one thing only. A faired version of the cp3 Yamaha owners love. Not any form of replacement. I’m ordering an r9 no doubt.
Want the mt09 but might be worth waiting for the r9.. maybe a cheap secondhand mt09 for now
Also, the new Duc V2 seems to be poised to be a competitor with the R9. This is gonna get good….
yeah THEYR makin smaller motor motorcycles…
And Im here waitin for a SuperCharged ZX14R !!!
I'll buy one if they offer optional heated grips.
Would love to test ride one. Looks like a great track day bike to replace my outgoing gsxr750
Say goodbye to the 1000 super bikes
My dealer told me yesterday they refuse to trade sports bikes as they don’t sell.
The fastest i can even go when otw to work is maybe 70ish if the road is empty enough lol. Im 33.
One issue is that the middle managers are retired racers. This produces good sport bikes but not so good general use bikes.
The inline 4 remains nice because of the balance it has. With counterweights to compensate for the secondary imbalance, it features the least likely engine configuration to rattle to pieces when you wring out the throttle.
That being said, it's really only suited for the track + due to the greater amount of pistons, fuel economy reduces exponentially (the tiny gaps between piston and cylinder wall are lost volume)
Then again, do we buy motorcycles for their practicality?
As a MT09 rider I believe that engine etc in a sport bike will chew up and spit out R6s. With a full fairing and sport bike ergonomics that 3 banger will run at least 165 mph to 170. It will do it without all the drama of winding out little 600!! My MT09 with just a little aerodynamic wind shield will drag my old fat behind to 144 mph. I still have one gear left
Don’t forget the final drive dropping 2 teeth to make the gearing a bit longer
the same as r6 👌🏻
The world’s developed countries’ governments keep making emissions stricter for the behaving countries, and basically ignore the fact that India and China and Russia spew out so much omissions that what the clean countries do hardly even matters. Very sad.
