  • What is the best way to detangle your hair type? What is the difference between all the different types of detangling brushes and styling brushes and what are they used for? What are the best detangling brushes and styling brushes for natural hair? Will detangling on wet hair cause breakage? We are finally going to address all these questions and more today explaining how to detangle different hair types for the quickest and easiest damage-free method, including the best brushes to use and the difference they make for each hair type. And while brushing textured hair is often frowned upon, brushing wet-hair is sometimes said to cause breakage, and styling with a brush is thought to be counter-intuitive (why would you brush out the curls to define them??) I’ll explain each of these theories as we go along and when/why you would want to use any type of brush on your hair. From a comb to brushes, to picks, this is your complete guide and all of my tried and true go-to tools. Without further ado, let's get to it!

Something to add: If you're one of those people the denman brush doesn't work for - the tangle teezer wet brush is great to style long 2b - 3a type hair because it doesn't seperate the hair as much and cause frizz like the denman brush does for some people with 2b/2c hair

I have 2a/2b hair that I always thought was completely straight, but just frizzy.
Dry brushing has caused so much breakage so when I found out I could detangle my hair wet it completely changed the game for me. I've been detangling in the shower for about 2 years now and my hair has never been this healthy. Before my hair never felt like it wasn't growing at all because it was just breaking off all the time, now I'm retaining more length than ever.
So I just wanted to thank all the curly girls for helping with my hair care. ❤️

As a wavy girl, it is SO REFRESHING and VALIDATING to hear you mention that wavy types can dry brush! I use my Wet Brush for like... everything. Detangling before/during the shower, styling, smoothing, even touch-up detangling throughout the day.
I've seen so many people say that wavy types shouldn't use a brush on dry hair (or EVER) because it "ruins the waves" and I've just never found that to be true.

Hey girl! I dont know if this will help but when my hair gets matted (i have fine hair and a looser texture) I put deep conditioner on my hair, a plastic cap, and then i warm up water (heat it up to a point that you feel comfortable with) dip a towel in it, extract the extra water from the towel and then i put the towel in top of my plastic cap. After that, i put a shower cap on top of all of that to encapsulate the heat, that makes my nots softer and makes it easier for me to detangle when i have matted hair.

Hey, I'm sorry to hear about your Mum. I used to have long dreadlocks, and brushed them out last year. It took like 4 hours per dread, and took months. My advice is to tease out as much as you can with your fingers, almost like you're trying to fluff it up and , then use something like a metal tail comb, and tease at the edges of the knots using the point. I actually used a pin, and a metal skewer. Work from the bottom up and keep combing the loose hair to stop it tangling, and switch between methods. I didn't use conditioner, I tried it on a few and found it easier to identify the real problem areas without. I did condition after.
Obviously my experience is a bit different, and only what worked for me, but I hope it helps in some way.

Great video Mel! I went on a detangling brush mission a few months ago when I saw you using the Wet Brush Epic Quick Dry in an earlier video. I had been using a wide tooth comb for years, but as you stated it takes forever to detangle. I tried the WB Quick Dry, Felicia Leatherwood, Tangle Teezer, some other Wet Brushes, but finally settled on the Wet Brush Go Green Detangler. It works so well with my hair I love it. My hair was super tangled the other night, and this brush went through those knots like a hot knife through butter! Thank you for all your videos and educating the curly hair community. I couldn’t quite get the point of the Denman brush until I was rewatching in search of a remedy for frizz in hot humid weather. On my next shampoo day I clumped with Denman, not necessarily to curl but to eliminate frizz. My 2b/c wavy hair responded and gave me frizz free results. Thank you.

I am SO thankful to have found your channel! I actually believe that I can do it on my own now. Additionally, you have helped me to define my curls again! I literally have a drawer full of different types of brushes from the past (decades) that I used depending on how long my hair was, how it was cut & how I styled it. I also have a drawer of curling irons/hot brushes plus a very expensive flat iron that I never once used. Just getting my hair dry was usually time consuming & exhausting enough lol. Wearing it natural has freed me from all that even though it requires more of an investment in products. I hated blow driers until I discovered the diffuser attachment. Best invention since foam rollers.

I don’t think there would be much to say since hair care is from all her videos. The only thing she would contribute is make sure you’re protecting the hair while it’s in the scarf by using a satin/silk scarf under your hijab if it’s not made of silk or satin. Others there’s not much to say- even your ends are safely tucked away so it’s a good protective style in itself 😊

Yes to the boar bristle brush detangling! 🙌🏼I use the Wet brand & swear by that method. My number one hair tip and has made it look so much shinier and better. I don’t have oily hair but it’s the only thing that doesn’t leave me with oilier roots and dry ends. It’s also great for exfoliation for me, like you say. I also am convinced it’s why my hair grows so fast, with the scalp stimulation & blood flow.

Thanks to you Mell I have the scalp massage brush, the tangle tamer and the denman brush. The scalp massage brush is brilliant. Due to neurological issues I have major sensitivity throughout my skull. When I touch my head I get a horrible sensation right around my head (like someone pressing on the pressure point in your wrist - horrible). With the massage brush it is again a pleasure to wash my hair. And my scalp is so much cleaner after using it compared to washing with my hands. The tangle tamer - I've recommended that to so many people. I wish my mom had that when I was a kid. Fantastic brush. Thank you for teaching me about them. I'm 50 and still learning.

@@ashleesmall6458 I've seen a lot of videos of people using dupes, and they work just fine so don't worry about that, also Mell has a video of how she uses it, but while you learn it could be a challenge
You can also search for videos using the denman brush, a lot of different people use different techniques and you might find one that works for you (if you would like, I recently watched a video of a girl called Alexa's curls, she has a technique where she "fingercoils" with the brush, and it's kinda weird, but her hair looks amazing, so maybe look it up and try it)
Also, I've realize that the more I style my hair, the more the denman brush "works" (like, it gets more defined), so don't lose hope!!
