I am turning 64 soon and have bought a cheap electronic kit. I had a kit when I was 14 but never learned to play it. Now I am trying for real late in life LOL. And this is a challenge! However, it is also one of the most common guitar strum patterns for a lot of music. I play guitar so I can hear the rhythm fairly easy. But man playing it on drums is a challenge! But I am going to get it if it takes me till I am 70!!!! Thanks for your great teaching style!

Thanks for the straight talk. I just bought a small e-kit and finally started learning to play drums a few days ago (after years of programming drums for my musical projects) and... woof. I've never been super coordinated with things like dancing, e.g. (picking up choreo, even simple stuff, has always resulted in a comedy of errors as I flail around and forget how limbs work) so it's good to know that everyone struggles with limb independence at first (and for a good, long while). That "bloody-mindedness" you mentioned is a bit of a challenge with ADHD (when things aren't immediately fun, my brain very insistently wants to veer off to something easier that promises a more immediate dopamine hit), but knowing that this "struggle" for independence is a natural part of the process and not a fatal deficiency in my potential ability or "lack of talent" helps me to reframe my view of practicing so that I can hopefully enjoy chipping away at the stone and find the fun and value in not being good until, eventually, I am. You're absolutely right that the expectation of getting better faster than is reasonable would've resulted in me getting frustrated and probably drifting away from practicing (or playing at all) while I cursed my clumsy hands and feet. Instead, with my expectations now calibrated correctly and the nagging internal question of "Am I even able to do this?" dismissed from my worry-hole, I'm actually looking forward to the challenge of it.
Absolutely fantastic lesson Mike and THANK YOU for saying how long it could take! It's all too often not mentioned when independence is discussed!! I also thought I was "struggling" wondering what was wrong with my head and arms, now I'm taking a very different view on it and that it's ok to not be able to do it yet!! I shall keep doing what you've shown here!!

It's the same for every instrument hours and hours of practise and frustration. I'm a folk musician from Ireland and it took me a minimum of five years to achieve any kind of fluidity in my playing there are days that I take one step forward and two back.
This isn’t ever said on all the other “Beginner lessons” on YT… thank you for putting everything into perspective. We all need to be humbled a bit before thinking we can simply play seemless 16th notes after practicing one week as a total beginner…
This video reassured me that it’s ok to take it slow and run through things physically so I can train the brain to get used to it. I sit at my kit thinking if other learners are doing it so slowly like me. Thanks man 👍🏻

A great lesson and an important message for any student. I am pretty good at finding consistent time for practice, but admit that I get distracted by the next thing I want to learn rather than being consistent with what I am practicing. I need to focus more

This was the first syncopated beat I ever learnt in 1969. No drum music in those days for Rock, even my teacher didn’t know how to teach it being a jazz drummer.
I first heard it on a song was Hendrix’s Album Band of Gypsys with Buddy Miles the drummer. Involved hours of repeatedly playing it on the record and intently listening to it and then trying to replicate it. I then developed a system of writing it down and then proceeded to work on placing the kick in different places to get a degree of independence which I never lost.
It was years later when drum books came out teaching that independence. Now there’s huge resources to lean into including Mike Barnes work.
Really, there was no drum notation back then to follow? No 1e+a, 2e+a...?
I love the way you put it about "earning it" You are totally right. Finally got my first E-drum kit after playing Guitar Hero drums for years and am loving my time with it. I have been studying music since 2010 and finally being able to work on drumming is such a great experience.

Mike what a fantastic showing of care to your students . If it helps letting people know that I'm 75, and I'm still learning, even though I've been sitting drum exams this last year, it's been hard graft, and it's been you and Mike Michalkow that have given me confidence together with constant repetitions of drum rudiments that has helped me achieve.
Another way to think of people finding drums difficult, is through being to unfair to one's own self .. you can't run until you can walk ..
So how about someone who wants to learn the piano, or the Saxophone, you have to start by playing scales, like drum rudiments....so through repeated playing your brain picks it up .
How about a mathematician doing A level exams...he or she had to start with learning simple practice of sums and getting over the years getting more confident through repetition...at school, and then later at College.
Mike is just a fabulous honest teacher...
Mike says the most important thing to do is playing rudiments slowly, your body will allow you to get faster with repetition..
Remember you can only play drums slowly to start with and if you are reading music, you can only play, as fast as your eyes can't follow the music.
make sure you are playing something correctly, and don't try another section until you've mastered the one you are on..
Sorry... you can only play drums reading music, as fast as your eyes can follow the music...otherwise you will be stop start...so play something slowly with repetition...but you must know the notes values first too...

Just the title earned a thumbs up, and such an important topic in learning independence, separating the hi hat and bass drum, especially playing 16th note patterns on the bass drum. I could have used this video when I first started out, and it also took me years to get this. Another exercise that helped me separate these two limbs, was practicing playing the hi-hats on the quarter notes, and the bass drum on all the "ands." Thanks! ✌❤🥁

62 here, and just starting too! It's been a lifelong dream, and I'm so grateful to have the chance now. I'm also loving it , and I'm working exactly on this separation of right hand and foot. I am definitely committed to this journey for however long I've got. I reckon this is a great brain workout. I break all these grooves down to painfully slow and I'm really tenacious. I tell myself 'I WILL get it'. I fully expect this work to take years and I love that Mike is very clear about the commitment needed.

Great lessons Mike as always, im now trying to incorporate the the seesaw hihat stick wrist action on the hihats so the stick shoulder counts 1 and the stick tip is the + sort of in a rocking manner incorporating the bass drum and getting precise placement feel like im taking steps backwards but I’ve had to break it all down to basics again, I know it’ll be worth it in the long run 🏃♂️ cheers for the lessons 🍻
Excellent video. This is exactly how I learnt to separate (though I'm still at a pretty basic level on this). The first time I got it, it was really like a light bulb went on. Mogwai's Hunted By a Freak was a great one to learn along to as the kick and hat are so clean and pronounced.

Brutally honest and a hard lesson for some of us. You're right of course, unrealistic expectations and insufficient practice. That 'five years' hit hard though! Ouch! Big questions to ask myself around whether I'm prepared to put the time in, but thank you for a very helpful take.
Tough love! Philosophical. I suppose learning to love, or just enjoy the hours spent by uber slowing down. I'm guilty of rushing because I was in a band the day I got a kit..mid 1970s!!! Luckily everyone else had just picked up their instruments too. But looking back I was bluffing my way through beats. You're making perfect sense, although at the time it was now or never.. I came up with some cool stuff but I was prone to stutter, great band though.. A guitarist is more free to screw up than a drummer.. But I'd be far better today if... If only.. I'm still playing everyday, still learning..and I like your ways very much.
If i cant play something then i slow it down to a speed where i can play it. Then i hope i can increase the beat even by 1 the next day.
You are spot on about people needing time to leanr and absorb things. This is the second or third clip i have seen where you mention this. There are some gifted players that can absorb stuff right away. I am not one of them,. I have to put the time in.
I am ok with that. My goal is to play music so i wll do what it takes to get there. Even if it means weeks or years on one single thing. I will get there. Things get easier with time. I know i am getting better little by little. Some beats are easier the next day.
At first it took me ages to be able to play stuff. I thought i was never goign to get it. I saw people playing and thought no way. But then little by little i took the thing apart and played it slow till i can do a full bar of what was being asked. Really slow. Then i increased teh tempo till i was not doing it anymore and stayed at a slighly lower tempo. Till i mastered that tempo.
There is no instant gratification here. Pay your dues
YOU MIGHT DO THAT FOR A WEEK. you might do that for a MONTH.
You are right there. I am a beginner drummer. Lenny kravitzs', Low. I could not wrap my head around the two 8th note bass drum beats separated by a hi hat. First day i barely managed to get one single bar. Barely. It was ugly but it was all in the right place and at a crawl pace. Day two and three were just as ugly bu ti managed to get to 3 bars with no mistakes and also at a very low pace. After one week i was able to at 60bps to play it with no mistakes. Then i started bumping it up as i was able to do the beat in my sleep just not at the songs pace which is 106bpm. So i worked on the pace for a few weeks and then after a month or so i was able to play the song in time with lenny on TH-cam.
After only drumming for for 3.5 months being able to play that i was over the moon.
I paid my dues. I put in the time. I must have spent hours and hours on that beat. It was a new skill so i had to do the mental gymnastics and exercise. Playing drums is not like riding a bike where once you have your balance you just use the muscles. Our brains are also involved as well with the counting.
I love drumming now. I am totally hooked. Only regret is that i did not try this earlier in my life as i am 52 now

So glad I watched this Mike..I thought it was just me who struggled with 16th note bass drums....I was expecting myself to be able to do this in a week....lol...pressure off...gonna give myself time
Yeah - it's a tricky one this. Relies heavily on decent foot technique as well. I started learning drums methodically at the beginning of 2020, 1 hour a day. This pattern came into my practice routine about 12 months ago and I'm still chipping away at getting it spot on and consistent. It's one thing to play this kick pattern cleanly and another to keep it going.
I started at the beginning of 21 and have learned a lot from Mike's no nonsense approach, consistency is what it takes.

Yep, went to one for a while but we've moved a bit too far from him but he was a great tutor.

Thank you for this. I'm just trying to learn these off beat kicks. At the same time learning this I'm trying ghost notes on the snare. The ghost notes I picked up on right away but the kick pedal is a different story. Let's use the "money beat" for example. I can get the kick in on the E of 2 but can't seem to get it on the A of 2. It's almost like the next kick/high hat on 3 is messing me up. Edit: I need to come back and edit this. I started practicing this with a different mind set that this might take a very very long time to get down. I know this sounds ridiculous but within a few minutes I was kinda doing it! It's almost like before this video I was telling myself I suck and I can't do it but now I'm telling myself to give it time. I'm sooo happy you preached about the difficulties of this and not to be hard on ourselves. And when I say I'm doing it now I mean SUPER slow. Now why I can do it at speed but I'll get there
Give the thing the respect it deserves > accept it'll take time and effort > you'll relax into the process and not be obsessed with the short-term outcome > You'll enjoy the process of improving. Cheers!

You don't need a practice kit or sticks for this, just sit on a chair, the floor is the kick drum, your thighs, the snare and hi hat. Or play the kitchen sink with your hands, it's quite a dynamic instrument!

Hi Andrew, cheers! No strong feeling about it either way. Clearly great drumming can be performed either way. Practice, dedication, musical sensitivity etc always the variables of success in my opinion. Whether the drummer uses open or cross handed (or any other other age old choices - trad vs matched grip, heel up vs heel down on bass drums etc etc) not of any great significance in itself. just curious mike, is the tension on your kick drum pedal high/medium or loose? trying to get the right fit, mostly rock and electronic music for me, think the cult/greenday and some downtempo electronic. i'm more interested in control then power since i play an e kit. i know it's technique mostly but also trying to reduce the double tap feeling sometimes when i don't want that. thanks!

I find a weird thing for me is if I'm really feeling it, I can seperate them no problem, but the moment I think to myself "hey im drumming right now!" I immediately get into my own head and start syncing really bad
Keep going! More repetitions, more automatic! That can always still happen, but the more rehearsed you are, the less it will I'd say.

Hi Mike, Do you think 'hearing' the rhythm is a good way to learn rather than trying to count it sometimes. I watch a video on hi hat rhythms (drum challenge from another channel) and I ended up playing it by repeating it. Parrot fashion if you will. Rgds Gary
Cheers for watching Gary. As I've said lots on this channel, they're both great tools to have. Hearing things and playing them back is a GREAT system, up until it isn't! When things get more complex and it gets more difficult to just "hear" them, at that point counting is a great way to work out what's happening, and build things up slowly - our "candle in the dark" when things get more complicated! Hey, man. I practiced through these with you and got the hang of those you showed. But the thing is, I don't have drums. And I can play drums because I "air drum" so I'm actually in the worship team in my school. They said I'm a really good drummer, the best they've had, which makes me happy. But I only do 1 kick throughout the whole songs like on 1 and 3. Or consistently on every count. So I was wondering, even though I don't have drums, will it be possible for me to teach myself this? I think those you showed in this videos were super good to learn and I could do it by sitting on the edge of my bed. Thank you for any tips.🤟

I've been trying to jam along with bright lights by Gary Clarke junior, it's so hard for me to hit the high hat on the 2nd bass drum hit on beat 1 of the groove. I either hit the high hat on both or just do 1 bass drum lol. I get it, I've got to earn it 👌
I'm listening on a decent speaker system. Your base setting on the mic is too high, mines right down.
Man, as someone who's taught themselves guitar over 19 years and am just now getting into drums (always had natural rhythm and had no problem picking up basic beats quick), I gotta say... it's hard finding good drum tutorials on yourtube compared to guitar. Everyone just talks for 18 minutes and gives 4 minutes of lesson scattered about in a 22 min video.

Sorry you have to keep drilling in the ‘you have to put in the effort and time’ mantra. It is true but that you keep spending so much time repeating it in recent videos means it must be a frustration that you keep seeing in students.
