RAPIDAN, Minnesota - The Rapidan Dam on the Blue Earth River is on the verge of collapse as it's become unearthed on a side of the structure with a home nearing collapse into the river!
#MNwx #Minnesota #Flooding #RiverFlooding #BlueEarthRiver #DamFailure
In 1979 the Salt River in Phoenix was raging from a week of rain. I was a dumb 20 year old - standing on the bank, passing one around with a few buddies - watching in awe as cars, and, yes, a house (!) Went floating by. We could feel the ground shaking from the power. The group turned to go, and after getting about 20 feet from where we had been standing, the ground let go and washed away. As high as we were, we all just looked at each other in stunned silence, realizing that we were just seconds from certain death. This footage triggered that memory. I pray for these people's safety.
I can relate- good story. Hoping for the best for the locals.
💯I pray that you realize that it was Almighty God that had his angels watching over you! 👇Psalm 91👇
🛡️⚔️Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.
For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings.
His faithful promises are your armor and protection.
Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day. Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday.
Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you. Just open your eyes, and see how the wicked are punished.
If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home.
✨For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go. They will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone. ✨
You will trample upon lions and cobras; you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet!
The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them. I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.”
🙂💯
Great story! Glad you got away safely
Phoenix in the 70's... good times!
@@firstinlastout Spare me the religious bullcrap. You think the guy in the white house in the video could have avoided this by praying a bit harder?
Thanks for the drone footage! So much better than helicopters flying circles from 300’
That's what I was saying, they can't get shots worth a shit because of FAA regulations, they have to keep circling from a certain altitude so they stay on radar. That and their seeming standard definition crappy broadcast cameras from 2003.
Gosh, that's SO sad. I was watching this earlier and thought that maybe that house had a chance. Prayers to the family. :(
Me too! It’s so beautiful! The poor family! It’s so scary close to going over. This is honestly tragic.
@@ritaking8827 eh - they'll get a big check
Many more properties damaged/lost downstream.
@@mt_gox Usually the "big check" doesn't cover the cost of replacing a home. If they even pay. "Standard exclusions include: flood, earth movement, earthquake, landslide or mudflow, settling, cracking, shrinking, subsidence or sinkhole, erosion, sinking, rising, shifting, expanding or contracting of earth. However, most homeowner's policies will cover an ensuing fire or explosion resulting from earth movement."
@@mt_gox That's what I was thinking. Only the people responsible already thought of that so they better get a good lawyer.
Some back story. The house belongs to the guy that bought and ran the Dam Store next door in about 1972. He ran, but did not own, the campground down river. The owner, after promising for decades to sell it to him, sold it to the county. Then the county turned it into a rustic site, depriving him of the income from fishermen, etc. And now the county's neglect has taken his home, at age 84. A Final Kick in the Teeth.
PS, I lived in that campground in 1973, when it was full of campers who would come there to fish and enjoy the place. The owner of the Dam Store, Jim, did a lot of business back then. Fond memories.
Thank you for the back history on the home. It's sad, sad indeed. It doesn't appear as though the home will be spared by the flood 😢
Jims two children now run the store.
@amyswalve1637 correct. the son also lived in the home.
Amen grew up in the area many fond memories here
isnt that the Am3ric4n dream - to have your land stolen by the US government?? I thought that was literally how you were founded as a nation?
These are absolutely the best views of the dam that you can find on TH-cam.
See how where there are trees and vegetation the ground holds up but right where the HO removed the trees to have a “view” it washed away.
@@gatoslokosforeverThat much water has no problem taking out a tree.
@@nancypelosi2627 trees protect against erosion. This is not a theory I just made up. Plenty of documented cases in hills and riverbeds.
@@gatoslokosforever Yes erosion. This is slightly more than standard erosion.
@@nancypelosi2627 it's how landslides happen during heavy rainfalls, you know there are natural dams right? and they breach too during heavy rain. that's why sometimes the hills where people deforested wash away.
At 2:19 you can see a huge chunk of bedrock break loose and tumble from the middle of the breach channel.
Just the comment I was looking for!
I think the drone operator saw that too. Anyways, it looks as if it made it deeper and changed the flow some, giving the house some more time possibly?
Prayers for everyone in the path and those folks about to see their house washed away
That should help
your prayers aint gonna do shit, those people need civil engineers.
God did this with his rain!!!!!!
The only thing that is going to help is pack up your stuff and get out of the waters way, can't do nothing else at this stage
@@sho942000boo!
Drone work...great job.
Mother Nature has a way of showing just how in charge she is. Historic Flooding and a Damn that couldn't compete with the forces and volumes. There has always been a danger building along rivers and this is one of those circumstances.
Yup you said it
Mother nature shows how stupid humans can be. Building a house 30 feet from a dam 😂
@@beautyupabove4708 The danger seems to have been letting fallen timber lie where it fell.
Someone forgot to warn God what happens next.
its not mother nature its humans. damn up a river and 75- 100 years later there 10' of silt and the base of damn and 20' of concrete and the one way for the water to go is around.
Yes the county has forgone routine maintenance of removing debris (the logs) that restrict the flow. This never would have happened but for this negligence.
The country has neglected our infrastructure by degrees for over 30 years and the results are critical imminent and catastrophic.
Feel so sorry for the owners of that home. I am not sure they can even stablize it or if it would be worth even if they repaired the area. What a mess.
They have much less lawn maintenance now anyway.
The River took the whole house a few hours ago.
shame, all that money but no sense oh well, welcome to homelessness like the rest of us, 😂
@@MissyMuthaTruckiNthats a bit cynical isnt it? Am pretty sure they didn’t expect the dam to collapse when they built the place…grow up for heaven’s sake
Ah yes, my favorite video director, Input Title. They do some amazing work.
My thoughts 💭 and prayers 🙏🏾 to all effected by this devastating situation
So sad to see all the damage caused by this weather lately.
Nature always finds a way.

It's defeated global warming.
Heavy rain and floods are scary. Thank you for sharing the videos, wish you luck👍❤️
Feeling for every one down river, when this dam burst god knows how much damage it will cause❤❤❤
Local authority says it will rise the water in the river by only two feet . and the dam will not brake up because the pressure has been relief by the water going around the dam
There is hardly a house between the dam and the confluence with the Minnesota river so damage should be minimal.
Water always finds a way!
Exactly, that's what I tried telling the cop when he caught me pissing alongside the highway.
That was a really amazing property. So sad.
I Truly feel bad to who ever owns that House. And Pray they get everything out before its gone. Praying for Everyone that Is Being Flooded by these Storms.
If praying worked, these things wouldn’t happen in the first place. The same with innocents suffering and evil people prospering.
@@Me97202Thank God for people praying. Worse to come is the seven-year tribulation spoken of in the Bible when the wrath of God is poured out on all rebellious and unrepentant people.
@@charlesrobert6211 You mean worse than the regular mass shootings? Worse than the increasingly explosive wildfires fueled by climate change conditions? Why aren't you on this dam praying the rain away?
I don't feel sorry, all that money but no sense 😂 should have built somewhere more safe
Does anybody know why they didn't try to clear the debris? Also, why are the two timber gates not flowing any water?
That is heartbreaking really. I never want to see that EVER!! I've lived thru a dam break.
Amazing in roughly 6 hours today that the house went from being about 6' from the torrent of water - to parts of it overhanging the edge. The power of rushing water is on full display here, with the amount of land it's eroded and washed away in that short period of time.
Thank You.
Props to the designer and people who built the dam.
Mother nature had to go around because it could not go through.
Hopefully the family in the white house there start a go fund me or something. Assuming Insurance doesn't do right by them, if they have it. Kind of hard to rebuild when the land you would rebuild on is gone too.
That property is BIG $$$$ I am sure they'll be fine.
@@charliewaters5289What property? The land is washing into the river!
@charliewaters5289 no it's not county's been trying to steal it for years
That will be beyond powerful when it gives way. I grew up where there were huge floods and a dam broke in 1889 in johnstown pa.
🙏 The family. Ty for the coverage. Excellent view.
Ouch 🤕 hopefully everyone is ok 👍 ❤❤
If the dam would have failed that house would have been fine but the water rushing around the dam screwed it.
@@user-uv7up4vg6i it was a pretty white farmhouse probably built 100 years ago its just too bad is all.
@@user-uv7up4vg6i you a professional dick or just part time?
I wonder where the septic tank was located? Maybe in the river now?
I wouldn't go to sleep in that house tonight. In fact I wouldn't be in that house at this point.
Oh dear Prayers for Minnesota!
that little dam is trying real hard to hold it together..built over 100 years ago...
Thank you for this! It says a lot!!!!!!
Lack of maintenance such as removing log jams?
There needs to be a live stream of this. I'm astonished there is no live feed (that I can find).
There was on the local news station KEYC-TV (from whom this drone footage was stolen from without credit.)
You can go to their website, as they are covering this very closely.
What gets me is why they didnt blow the two safety gates ( they are wooden) on the left hand side ( looking upstream) to release the water pressure before it was to late - or even now do it now
From what I keep hearing It was severely neglected, none of that stuff probably worked anymore. But it looks like nature is taking its course and made a spillway of its own anyways.
county is probably happy the dam is getting taken down for free
4:40 holy cow. you can really feel the power of the water in this shot.
That was excellent footage.
I remember watching Oroville every single day from here in the UK courtesy of Blancolirio, In this case that dam seems to be holding up and doesn't look likely to collapse, not that that's any consolation of course, Seems wrong saying great footage under the circumstances but it's way better than the news coverage. Anyway, best wishes to all concerned and I hope the situation improves quickly.
That is terrifying
This is just horrible. I'm down river and hope it doesn't collapse and feel bad for the home owner. It's an amazing sight to see by drone
Thanks for sharing this. A few hours ago, the river took the whole house with it.
The house is still standing. There was another structure that washed away in the beginning but it wasn't the house.
Praying for All Effected So Sad 🥺
That's allot of water
If the two gates on the other side hadn't been concreted up....
Sad! The same exact situation happened here in North Houston area! They knew the rain was coming but yet did nothing to start releasing water! In fact a woman wrote to the water control board & asked to start releasing the water. His response was no, we want enough water for the lake this summer! Incompetent sabotage!
Been following this all afternoon, figured that house wouldn't make it. Happened incredibly fast also! Maybe people should stop running waterways? That is a beautiful natural fall!
Let’s buy a house right next to the dam honey. The sound of rushing water will be fantastic.
The owners of this home operate a cafe/tourist trap at the dam.
I'll never make that dam mistake.
@@FINfinFINfinFINfin 😁
meanwhile, people in the city are listening to the sound of rushing water on the internet just so they can get to sleep at night.
The house was built away from the river and dam; I'm not sure how many feet but it wasn't built right next to it. The river eroded away a huge amount of terrain along with the Xcel substation. In pictures I've seen previous to this the house seemed to be a reasonable distance away.
wow amazing footage
Great footage! Thanks!
The house, half of it hanging above the chasm, is remarkably solidly constructed.
what makes them think the bridge will hold if the dam gives out?
Because the water doesn’t hold up the pilings.
@@HappyHarryHardonactually they figured the bridge would have to be replaced when they tore down the dam because they were unsure of its stability after.
We’ll see I guess.
@@HappyHarryHardon agree, just saying they were already planning it for years.
Hope everyone is ok !
It’s the next day, can we get an update on this house???Apparently there was a live stream earlier but whoever posted it, deleted it and I never saw it.
The local flooding is only a single component. There are other dams and lakes and communities downstream that will face flooding as well...
That's why they built the 40 ft embankments downstream to protect cities. And they already said that if the damn failed it would only cause a 2-foot surge.
This can't be good, terrible situation!
It’s all in god’s plan. Rejoice!
@@HappyHarryHardonPlease, no nonsense!
@@user-ho3dk4pg8y He said you’d say that.
It’s a beautiful situation
As strong as dams are, they can't hold the power of a swollen flooded river.
Man, that's likely to undercut the house's land it sets on even more as the night goes on.
If/when the dam collapses where is the floodwatergoing to go? They need to show what is downstream!
The minnesota river then Mankato
😢 I feel so sorry for that family in their home and their business! Sending prayers of comfort zone
Amazing
That house, omg , so sad.
Nature is beautiful
Hug trees, I do.
SWOON! 👍😍
Hope they thought to get all their stuff out.
Holy moly, insane footage
Looks like there's a solid bedrock formation where the damn breached, which is likely why the damn is located at that spot. That will prove to be beneficial. If the damn had been located north a few hundred feet downstream where the deep scouring occurred, the ultimate outcome would be far worse.
water always finds a way
That kinda looks like an intended emergency spillway , but DAM !!
Build back better sure seems to be working, thanks joe! Seriously sucks to watch though. I'm sorry to everyone affected by this.
Yes the county has forgone routine maintenance of removing debris (the logs) that restrict the flow. This never would have happened but for this negligence.
The country has neglected our infrastructure by degrees for over 30 years and the results are critical imminent and catastrophic.
We've had severe flooding and heavy rains for several days with a city emergency being called, so I'm assuming the downed trees are from that. The heavy flooding is causing the dam to break and half the city got been flooded from rain already before this happened
Good thing tonight's storm will miss this area, by a slim margin. Excellent footage, sad to see the exposed basement where the foundation should be.
anyone know why the dams other side is completely off. When all the trees trunks are piling up on the flooding side? That is very strange!
Any word o the inflow rate and if it is increasing or decreasing? If the flow rate has already reached the maximum then it's a good bet the dam will hold and they will be able to repair the earthen works and any other damage. OTH, if the flow rate is still increasing then the damn is perhaps in some jeopardy.
Flow will not peak for at least another 18 hours. Also, this dam is over a century old and has not been properly maintained.
Living that close to a dam was probably never the best idea
Living on the edge
Why are the gates on the left side of the damn closed?
It' appears to be blocked by debris, can't be certain of that though.
Blocked.
Those two gates are wooden boards, they can’t get in to pull them out.
Probably blocked. Just look how much debris the other ones have on top but the other two do not look like that have as much because it is probably all under water clogging in up. You get more stuff going down the river on the sides then the middle. The middle two look like it is starting to get more clogged then the other one also.
"For sale: river front property, house with additional attached shed and garage. Spectular view like being in the river itself."
Such a pretty place. Too bad one big stinky city sucks up all the resources.
Meanwhile Joe Biden is too busy preparing for a debate
Well no one can say they didn't build that dam right! 100 years old n still holdin itz ground...no pun intended! 😎🇺🇲
I am so sorry for these poor folks. You’re not gonna stop water, and unfortunately they were in its way. Prayers for you people.
No sympathy here. They built in a flood plain, clearly
Oh just some hopes and prayers is all they need they’ll be fine!
I did wonder why all that debris was left to make maters worse , could a digger on the bridge/road not help to remove debris. Big massive clean up to come.
Hope no one gets killed.
Judging by the scale of neighbouring vehicles and such like, I think the bridge and the dam are too far apart to reach.
the bridge is at an angle in relation to the dam, putting the nearest part of the first open gate 186 feet from the centerline of the bridge, and the farthest point is 245ft from centerline. A machine that big is incredibly rare, as its in the "ultra long reach" category, and most of those are high reach units anyways.
Theres no way that bridge is rated for a piece of equipment that big, as the ONE chart i can find for a 96ft reach machine lists the operating weight at 130 ton. not gonna work
Not a house
Family run store, for last 50 years
Owner said she could stand having a house washed away, just move to another
But losing the family’s business was so devastating
Dam had not been used to produce electricity in the last 10 years. Power outage in the area was loss of carrier lines
Praying
That may not help a whole lot.
It’s all in your gods plan. Don’t pray to change His plan. Who do you think you are to ask Him to change His plan.
Waste of time
@@roberthenry9319never does
@@HappyHarryHardon😂
I'm pretty sure this footage is from a helicopter? We are staying in a campground about 3.5 miles directly south of the dam. No evacuation notice here. I drove up to look at the dike about 1.5 miles south of the dam and there was at least 15-20 feet of freeboard. That breach has to be alleviating alot of the water pressure from behind the dam. Be a shame if that structure goes. Just hoping for no more rain for a while and water levels recede.
"There's water everywhere what are we going to do?"
Beavers: DAMN IT!!!
Thanks for the incredible drone work. Clear images and a steady camera are super helpful.
Sympathies to the owners of the house that ultimately collapsed into the river.
Why don't they remove the debris, to allow the water to go though the spill way gates, also remove the timber spill way gates ?
Do you want to get that close to this?
Alot of angry water!
SO sad!
I hope that the old home and business survives.
So, has the build up of debris reduced the flow through the release gates causing the overflow?
Those poor people.
That dam is over 120 y.o. Should have been dropped 70 years ago and replaced !
It's odd that they aren't dumping a bunch of heavy rip-rap in to attempt to save the house. It's been done in other high-erosion flood situations but it doesn't seem like they are trying anything at all to save this house. Certainly sucks for the homeowner.
man i hope that house holds on 🤞
The dam still stands!
I bet the dam will hold.
Ya, it probably will but the soil around it won't. They should have blown a section of the dam to protect the property along the dam, which clearly is now blown out. And they said in the news that they built 40 ft dikes to protect against a surge which they said when only raise the water 2 ft. And they said the water is at 27 ft so would still be under 10 ft of the protection but yet they're letting people that own the land along the river have their land be destroyed because they don't want to bust the dam and protect the property around it
So sad for the people losing their home.
Good work Input Title you have a future in directing
Trees between house and river to help prevent erosion, got it
5:01 - that water rushing UNDER the cement structure seems bad for the idea that this dam might stay standing...
Am I mistaken or is the past the dam rising? Looks higher against the dam, like the water can’t flow fast enough after it’s gotten past the dam.
