    The thing I'm getting from this is that it's not sword or shield, it's sword *_and_* shield. Unlike in most games and movies, people don't switch between either tool in actual combat. They're used together to attack and defend at the same time. I know that's kind of basic, but I would love to see a game that stays true to that dimension of real swordplay.

      I also showed this video to a new friend of mine. He should be here too as soon as his timeline allows it. I had him craft the exact same concept in shield, except the shape is a chamber pot lid. Ha ha! Clever right? I'm a copper dragon, it is my duty to think of something like that.
      On break from our session right now. No problem, I need to have a rest so that my magic can recharge anyway.
      Also each time the video ends while I read some books and stuff I hit refresh. After all, this is about helping people through rough times and supporting under appreciated channels through youtube's algorithm.

  • @StuffGong

    Great to see some shields in action ! Just one thing to consider: in many cases here the sword strike lands on the rim of the shield, with an actual sharp sword, this would mean the end of the fight : your sword end up stuck in the shield. Something to take into consideration for your further training and sparring ! :)

    • @BladeFitAcademy
      @BladeFitAcademy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Very true, Sir. We haven't crosses that bridge yet. It's hard for a modern person to contemplate just how effective a shield is because of the reason you bring up. Without sharps it's hard to recreate the true motions of sword and shield. But we just don't spar with sharps at this point.

    • @StuffGong
      @StuffGong 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@BladeFitAcademy yes it is definitely the number one problem with Hema shield practice ! I wouldn't practice with sharp weapons either !

    • @Sleepy12ftPanda
      @Sleepy12ftPanda 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wait, wouldn't a lot of shields have iron banding around the rim? Like, if it was just a straight wooden plank I could see that happening, but something's got to hold the boards together. Also, you'd have to take into consideration the integrity of the weapon. Would you rather have a shield that could give you leverage over an opponents blade in one battle and then be that much closer to breaking, or would you prefer to have it last longer without that chance of catching your opponent's strike?

      @@Sleepy12ftPanda Nope the rim on heater shields did not have that. You won't cleave right through the shield, but it'll probably get stuck. You'd want that to happen because now you control his sword and he can't do anything. So he dies/loses.

    As a published fantasy author HEMA improved my book very much. I trained in long sword, Liechtenauer tradition. And we played fights from my book so I would see the words taking place in action. However my main character uses sword and round shield, while many have swords and heather shields, and people in my club aren't trained in that, me neither. Where should I begin if I want to get good with sword and shield?

    • @BladeFitAcademy
      @BladeFitAcademy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Honestly this is a bit like reconstructing TRex DNA. We have some but there has to be lots of inferences. But look at the opening positions of I:33 Manual. These serve very well with a heater shield. I have some videos in my channel that discuss the commonality between heater shield and buckler. Also the way a heater shield is strapped makes a giant difference with what you are going to do with it. I will be making more content on this soon as I am recovering from an injury currently.

    • @BladeFitAcademy
      @BladeFitAcademy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A major thing to consider with a real sword and shield fight is that a wooden shield means your enemy is not going to try and crush through it with the sharp because it will stick and cause a bind disruption- leaving an opening and/or an opportunity for you to yank the shield with the sword stuck in it, knocking the enemy off balance and creating an opening. Also with just the slightest movement, a heater can be well in front covering center line while making all seven sword attacks. It all but disappears from your line angle attacks while still giving maximum coverage.

    • @BladeFitAcademy
      @BladeFitAcademy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Therefore the thrust is essential for sword and shield fighting. As well as creating a bind sword against sword . It's easy to lose sight and feel of your enemy's tip and that's exactly when they break your shield defense if you can't get a bind on it with your sword.

    How do you counter a sword and shield, if you only have a sword?

    • @BladeFitAcademy
      @BladeFitAcademy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Keep your legs moving. Don't ever stand still. Same with your sword. Constantly keep your sword in motion, and do not let your opponent bind your sword, because then you're dead. You must counter strike at their sword hand or wrist as they attack you. Don't get close. Dance around them. Present a false distance opening, void and counter. If you are lighting fast, or at least faster than them, thrust hard at their face if they present an opening. Make it count.

    Quick question, have you tried going for the legs since they're exposed. Like the shields look like they're good for covering your upper body but your legs wide open.

    • @BladeFitAcademy
      @BladeFitAcademy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Excellent question. Here is the answer: the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. So setting up a cut to the legs is a diagonal line and takes longer than a thrust to the head. So even with shields one must beware opening an attack with a cut to the legs. A well placed thrust unopposed by the sword can get around a shield surprisingly fast. But if you out range your opponent with a spear or polearm it is easier to hit the legs. Or if you create a sword bind and then step into close measure cutting the legs is more successful.

    • @matthewrussell4343
      @matthewrussell4343 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BladeFitAcademy Well here's the thing about thrusting to the head, if you keep the tight and close to your body unlike I33, you can easily interrupt a thrust to the face by moving the shield up just a little bit. Now there is the arguement "But, you need to cover your hand or your hand would be exposed." But, to that I say that those particular shields are made for covering your body, not your hand. If you go full I33, you will find that you'll wear yourself out from the weight of the shield, and you'll lose control of your shield a lot quicker. Now what I do with my round shields is use a mix of I33 and meyers dussack and supplement that with evidence found it the mass grave at Visby. Alot of the bodies found it Visby actually had leg wounds.

    • @BladeFitAcademy
      @BladeFitAcademy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@matthewrussell4343 Visby was a mismatch in weapons and tactics. Those poor folks went down from halberds to the legs at a greater distance. They didn't seem to have leg armor. It's hard to cover legs and head at the same time. And really covering legs with a triangle shield is a high risk/ low yield move. The thing is battle lines are an entirely different animal than duels. The locals defending their town from professional soldiers were so outclassed in formation fighting it was just about a slaughter. Front line keeps the enemy distracted and the second line of halberdiers crush the legs. I get what you're saying about big shields and I:33. I don't strictly use it for full sized shields. There are some great takeaways though. You've got some worthy ideas I'd love to see a demo somewhere. Maybe we can compare notes?

  • @krystofcisar469

    Im sure you had figured it out already - but for me anything else than slightly diagonal upward facing straps feels very unwieldy for fighting as infantry... :) maybe vertically straight up straps those also arent bad but thats more rigid and would be uselessfor cavalry. Those shileds were ment to be usefull for cavalry and infantry alike. Riders would probably use horizontal straps-

    What are the dimensions of your shields?

  • @nobodyrissole1921
    @nobodyrissole1921 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Firstly, seven millimetre thick aluminium shields block nine millimetre bullets at point blank range. So I think you guys should make some modern day shields and armour with that. In addition, four milimetre titanium is lighter and of equivalent strength as seven milimetres of aluminium. Therefore, I think making titanium and aluminium knights with shields would make HEMA modern day battle equipment. You would even be able to defeat a room of people with side arms.

    • @xxxxxx5868
      @xxxxxx5868 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ...7mm aluminium does not stop 9mm bullets. If you're talking 7cm, maybe, but definetly not 7mm.
      A full suit of 7cm thick aluminium would be so heavy and so akward that walking would be an endevaor of endurance and patience.

      @@nobodyrissole1921 I have to break it to you chief but that armor you designed? Yeah, it isn't gonna work.
      First of all, it's too heavy. But alright, let's say you're using this light bulletproof metal sheet, it's still too cumbersome. Do you realize how akward it would be walking in that thing? Not to mention fighting with a sword.
      A bullet doesn't need to penetrate to kill you. The reason why ceramic plates break on impact is to spread the force out. You would need layers upon layers of padding to dampen the energy of the bullet, which just adds to the weight and cumbersomeness. And all that, to stop one bullet. A person isn't just going to fire a single bullet and give up, he is going to empty that magazine at you until you go down.
      If you are able to prove me wrong pleaee do so, I'd love to see this bulletproof plate armor in action, but seeing your armor design, I'm unconvinced. But please don't wear it. I don't want to be responsible for a death

      @@xxxxxx5868 yeh a 7.62 NATO round hits with about 68kg spread over the whole bullet proof plate. If it hits the corner of the plate it is going to dig in to you a bit but if the bullet hits the centre of the plate it is not to bad. That is including clothing under the plate.
