    I am literally applying these tactics in VR video games. Modern technology requiring ancient techniques! What a world!

    Thanks for putting these videos up, it seems like sword and shield is a very overlooked aspect of HEMA. I may have to make a run to the hardware store to buy what I need to make my own now!

    Hey just want to say ty for videos like this and I hope you make more like this in the future. There are so few shield and sword tutorials on TH-cam out there (one cannot deny the popularity of the longsword) so this type of content is appreciated.

    Fantastic video as always Federico. my favourite strike with shield is from 3rd ward! As with large shields it is usually unexpected, and it is the opponents weaker side as that's their sword hand

      Does the rotella work or was supposed to work with an early side sword?
      Or more with renaissance types and rapier?
      Such size of shield isn't uncommon in history.
      I always wonder if a system get adapted when weapons change or if they rebuild a system?
      I thinking about antique shield system with shorter swords, could those techniques become the fundamentals for I:33, for exemple?

  • @narusawa74
    @narusawa74 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Maestro, I have a question :
    Was there any official texts regarding fighting with side sword and heater?
    Since the I:33 was the base for buckle and sword play, would any form have existed before that I:33 text?
    Or its just an evolution form it, adapted during crusades and war??
    Watching you I can see the mechanics are obviously following the same rules....
    Just curious since the I:33 was a martial manual for monks fed up being butchered by Scandinavian raiders😁

    • @FedericoMalagutti
      @FedericoMalagutti  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      narusawa74 well I can only partially answer your questions because we don’t know many things sadly.
      No, we don’t have any heater shield and sidesword manuals. But the Sideswoed was used with a number of different shields like the Rotella and the Targone (which is basically a Renaissance kite Shield)
      We don’t know how the triangular Shield method of fighting was for sure, we can only experiment. I use partially I.33 as a source because it shares partial similarities with this weapons, but it haves huge limits thou.
      And well, I think the I.33 priest was far lesser “softy” compared to the 9th century’s monks, ahah.

      @@FedericoMalagutti well, they learned their lessons at Lindisfarm Abbey😂.
      We keep seeing 15th and 14th century knights with the pointy heater shield and side sword/broadsword or mace/axe/hammer (French often) . Fully geared up for war and tourneys..... So I wondered if they just used the old method passed down form sword master to students, a style validated more through war experience than pure treatees.... Lack of education (read/write) probably didn't make it easy to compile and spread as a text too.
      And what about the possible contamination from the Scandinavian sword and shield system? Once they started to settle they surely passed on those techniques which were very efficient at war.
      Since the heavy infantry like Roman legions didn't exist anymore how the knowledge of those tactics could have survived, merge and be passed on through age and/or maybe imigration of different warrior cultures....??
      Even Maures had a pretty good shield/shamshir combo. And my Indian roommate certifies me there is a very ancient shield and sword style form there too.
      Look it up its quite amazing how they use the flow.
      Kalari payat is the name maybe... But I'm not sure at all I'm not mixing it up with the name of A Filipino martial art involving blades too....

    How important is it to stay square to the opponent? What do y-u do if you find yourself striking the edge of the shield in the 5th guard? (The Strike from bottom right to top left.)

    • @FedericoMalagutti
      @FedericoMalagutti  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As i. Any other fighting system which uses both the hands keeping a square position is important at the very least 50% of the times, we are mainly talking about the situations in which you have to strike offensively while left foot forward, or when you need your shield more forward while you keep a right foot forward.
      Well you should try to avoid hitting the shield to not get stuck into hit (of course this is in terms of sharp swords) so avoiding it is important. I give two advices in the video to achieve this ;-)

    Thanks for this video. Sadly the heater shild is not presented very much in Manuscripts i like every step in the research of the "knightly shield".
    Belonging to this i had an idean to Movement of the schield. Because Your swordhand is, maybe its just a camera perspective, often unprotected. So my Idea: if you compare the actions with the I.33 the Buckler is not static. Maybe the heater shield can be used in a similar way to Protect the hand same as the Buckeler does.
    Maybe i am Wrong but in the Logic of martial arts: no action with great selfdefense it would be an valid option.

    You're holding that heater shield way too far out from the body.
    This is going to fatigue you. The style of fighting using a heater vs using a buckler or other centerbossed shield are VASTLY different.
    You hug the heater closer to the body and use it purely defensively.
    You're recreating dueling moves with a cavalry shield..
    You don't see the issue with this?

    • @FedericoMalagutti
      @FedericoMalagutti  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for taking the time for giving me a tip, but I can’t do anything else than assure you that I know quite well what I’m doing and why.

    • @ryanmcewen415
      @ryanmcewen415 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FedericoMalagutti I do not doubt your ability with dueling equipment. But a heater isn't meant for duels.
      It's uses and mechanics are vastly different.
      Using it in this way is a detriment. You are better off with a buckler.
      I also know what I'm talking about.
      I used both for years.
