      Hey yammie , can I ask a totally unrelated question? Which would be the better (more stable) bike for riding in windy conditions, as it’s always windy in Ireland, a ninja 650 or a gsx 650f? I’m guessing the gsx because it’s heavier? I hear ya sayin, that’s two totally unrelated questions, ok, totally unrelated question 3, which is the better bike in general? You can tell I’m a new rider can’t you? That’s kind of rhetorical but I just put a question mark on it just to confuse myself and possibly anybody that reads this.

    I had the BMW 1200 LT (Light truck), the bike that became the 1600. Once the 1600 came out, the value of the 1200 took a beating. There are some great deals to be had on these used and for touring, you won't be disappointed. I never had a single repair to do on mine. The design didn't change, so get a 2002, nobody knows it isn't a 2014.

    • @daveroberts1
      @daveroberts1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The design did change post 1999 and it did not "become" the 1600. That is a totally different bike albeit still a touring bike. One major design change in the 2000 on bikes was the electric lift. The rake was changed as was the engine power output. There are probably many more on the bike that the "design didn't change"!

    The most comfortable tourers were the loop frame Moto Guzzis of the 70's. The Ambassador 757cc could cruise at 90mph for hours. It held the 24 long distance record for several years. None of the other bikes could match it's distance even though they were faster as they had to stop too often to refuel. It's record wasn't broken until the Kawasaki Z1 900 came along.

    Most comfortable bike I've ever ridden? My 2000 Yamaha Road Star MM Ltd., 1600cc V2, gobs of torque and enough hp to blast through traffic quite nicely, monoshock softtail and wide glide front end tuned to feel like your riding the two wheeled equivalent of a '59 Cadillac (insanely smooth and plush), awesome rider ergonomics (forward mount floorboards, 26" seat height, wide comfortable bars), and literally the plushest saddle ever made! It's the bulletproof cruiser HD *wants* to make...in fact, Harley sued Yamaha over this very bike's engine, saying Yamaha plagerized the design...HD lost, and the mighty Road Star series still cruises onward!

    Comfort is always a very subjective subject. Some people consider cruisers with forward controls the ultimate but to me that is a torture test. The water skiing position with 90% of your weight on your tailbone and no way to lift yourself up on the pegs while riding is close to being on a torture rack in my opinion. And yes I have owned a V rod, Dyna wide glide and Sportster 1200 Custom so...

Sitting bolt upright, especially with my feet way forward, is, as you say, torture.

Comparatively to some bikes yes that is probably true. It is a hell of a performer and an absolute joy to ride. Bike is skimming the front end in the first two gears. On the track it shifts out of 2nd at 100mph, with 4 more to go. Stable in the wind, pillions enjoy it too. Would recommend, but don't expect a lazy boy. I'd say it's comfort increases with speed lol. Everytime i get off it I think, " I'm selling this for a gold wing," OR," I'm selling this for a zx14," then I wind up just keeping it because it's great. LOL

    I really love my 2012 Yam FJR 1300. Longest one day trip I did was around 450 miles. The ride height is a little tall for my stubby legs, and my right leg did have some joint pain (mostly because I'm old with bad joints), but the ride was great. It has loads of power to spare, some nice features (newer models have more) and it can lean. It'll tear up the curves, power down the straights, and haul the rider, passenger and lots of stuff a long way.

    The Goldwing, and GLs of the last 20 years, are amazing machines. That motor is amazing. However, after 3 different rentals in 3 different states in last 10 years, I can’t recommend it for comfort. Hard seats don’t bother me, but if you over 6 feet tall, the inability to move your feet/legs in different potions is a deal breaker. The GL is low for sure, but the position of that 6 cylinder motor has my legs spread out like I’m at a gynecologist table. A old Honda tech told me years ago, “anyone can ride the ‘wing… but if you’re over 5’10, good luck”. But damn, that smooth awesome delivery of power on the GL is just amazing. There might not be a perfect motorcycle .. but it’s fun searching for one .

    Everyone sleeps on just how comfortable Triumph's Speed Triple really is. For us 6-footers, seat height and ergs are perfect. And no clip-ons here; as sporty as this thing looks, the riding position is more upright than most bikes.
    But the proof is in the pudding.
    I took my 2000 Speed Triple from Minneapolis to San Francisco in four days to start a West Coast Road trip two years ago. Averaging over 650 miles per day on that opening stretch, I hopped off that puppy every evening none the worse for wear. Total trip distance was 5,500 miles (north to Seattle, then east back to Minneapolis), and I would do it again on that bike in a heartbeat.
