    Imagine if all teachers were this concise with explanations and direction, we would all be great pianists. I got more from this 24 minutes video than all my lessons combined.

    Katsaris: What a nice, inspiring and friendly way to teach a student. Hello Segovia? Are you there? Have you heard?? Teaching master class can also be done like this!

    You can tell by the way she dresses, how she is going to play. I am serious. She need to go for it and let her feelings come out. One day , it will be a eureka moment. Nobody can say when and no master class can bring it out on demand. Once it comes she will never look back.

      uff you’re too harsh. There’s something also charming in reserved playing. However you’re right that Katsaris gave her more communicative power. Incredible masterclass.

    Can someone help translate the part where he's explaining the fingering for the difficult section with the contrary motion in sixths? Around 20:00.

      At 20.09 he mentions re-distributing the note b d b rh d in lh. Putting speed at half helps one see what he is doing. Interesting earlier is when he shows how angling the hand makes the 6ths easier for small hand. I need to study this!

    • @dexterfurber9730
      @dexterfurber9730 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      This is approximately a direct translation from Katsaris. At 19:09: I am going to indicate (teach you) a fingering which is not a traditional fingering-ok it is not a traditional fingering-which could help you develop your sixths technique necessary not for Chopin, but for the composers that came after such as Prokofiev, Bartok, Rachmaninoff etc. When you are at measure 51, you have...wait it is measure 50, you have this: (Katsaris plays). The same fingering: 1/3, as per usual, then 2/5. 2/5; 1/3. 1/3, 2/5. 2/5, 1/3. And here we can take the fourth note of this measure 51: the right hand plays B, D, B, in octaves. Like this, right? The left hand plays only the D, and that is this, with the finger 2, perfect, and from here we can do this, watch (Katsaris plays). That means 1/5 in the right hand, in the left hand 4/1. Then, 1/4 in the right hand and 5/1 in the left hand. That means, like this (he plays). 5-4, with the thumb here, that slides, and here (left hand), 3/1 and 4/1. Like this, sliding the thumb. And you can develop a technique permitting you to exact a small accelerando. You can accelerate more easily.

    Of course that student must have feelings for Chopin. But she is so shy ! That's a handicap to her expression. Question of education, i presume.

      It honestly sounds like she has never listened to a recording of this etude. But also from experience you tend to freeze up and take fewer risks in a masterclass, especially with a giant such as Katsaris...

      anasanh Usually masterclass are a place to learn more about interpretation, and sometimes when you work in a masterclass, it’s an early stage of learning the piece, so maybe she just finished the deciphering and hasn’t worked a lot in her interpretation. Depends on her level too, we have no idea at what level she is and thinks it’s kinda unfair to critique someone who is doing a masterclass for the purpose of learning. Sure if she played like that at her recital I would understand but damn.

      …… she’s not emotionless. A lot of people especially in classical music are told to keep your emotions restrained. The minute he showed her it’s okay to use your emotions to guide your musical playing she immediately responded.
