    One cool thing about J. S. Bach is that he knew in his lifetime that the compositions he wrote were good, and deserved to be preserved even if his contemporaries did not agree. He saved compositions in the Well-tempered Clavier, pedagogical exercises, etc as well as all the stuff he was commissioned to write. I'm sure glad he did, though a lot has been lost.

    • @Nooticus
      @Nooticus 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ehh I’m not sure I agree with this. He didn’t save any more than anyone else in his time. He never became famous across Europe like Handel or Vivaldi, so despite working for royalty, I don’t think he ever fully understood his worth and importance for the future of all music. He was a very humble and god-fearing man..

    yes the harpsichord solo was my first awakening.. age of 3...to the greatest musician this world has ever... all 6 concertos are mind blowing examples of what you can do with 12 notes.... in the well tempered system...
    i very much doubt this will ever be bettered by anyone in a billion years...

    I can't believe the tremendous amount of work gerubach put in to produce these videos. Thank you so much - you couldn't have chosen better, more profound and enduring music. Bach has never been surpassed in his intimate understanding of music and ability to draw on that knowledge to compose.
    A pinnacle of humanity.

      Oh wow! I had a CD of Walter Carlos Switched on Bach back in 1983 and discovered and memorized that it was at 3:10 till about 4:24 for his Moog Synthesizer version of movement one of the 5th Brandenburg for one of the most beautiful and moving musical passages I had ever heard! Love it! I thought it was so incredible that Bach could have extended and explored and developed it for 2 or 3 more minutes before moving on. Yup! BEST PART!!!

If you make mistakes and fumble, she would tell me it's okay, but that means that my dexterity isn't there yet. Long answer short, just takes many hours of practicing going fast and getting faster :)

    Closing my eyes, I can follow the flute and violin quite well, until that blasted harpsichord (as amazing as it is!) kicks in, then I'm analytically lost--but spiritually right on cue.

      Bien vu !

      Pinnock is old school. Nowadays harpsichord players just either slow down or even stop completely and start up; it's bizarre and not musical.

      Gould loved Bach, but I don't think Bach loved him Bach* (lol) As good as he was as a performer his performances never showed (to me) Bach's true "colors"! Bach had such "purity"! melodically and intellectually, the way he played (Gould) was so arrogant! as if he really believed himself a reincarnation of J.S. Bach himself!...as if he truly believed he completely understood Bach himself...

    I am an atheist, but 9:27 is what one might hear should they ever witness the opening of the gates of heaven. There are two kinds of music for me: ones that make your mind shoot bolts of lightning from your scalp and down your spine, and ones that make your heart weep or leap out of your thoracic cavity. Seldom does a piece make me experience both of these things simultaneously and at such intensity. Bach: the deity of music who has constructed many great semblances of a heaven, more so than any book, myth or promise tied along a carrot and dangled in front of its victims, perfectly so as to block their view of... ok I’m getting in offensive territory so I’ll shut up as I can’t be ar*ed with any counter attacks 😊

    @DarkimCraft Bajo Continuo, I don't know the english word, perhaps "Continius bass". The number indicates the chord, and the composer only wrote the bass line, the player does the rest. Excuse me poor english.

    For people wondering how one would play the Cadenza, well, if you've actually played on a harpsichord you would notice that it is in fact easier to play faster compared to a piano. I don't really know why, maybe it has something to do with the plucking of the string instead of the striking of the string that a piano has.

    • @metalpunk

      That's the right idea. The action on a harpsichord can be slightly stiffer on the attack - initial depress - but because there's no dynamic touch, the rest of the action is light. And the return is quick.
